Are GC-ed languages bad for battery driven devices today?

Looking at different languages with different methods of handling memory got me thinking of this. Most modern languages rely on garbage collection. For instance C# which Microsoft is using to write all kinds of tools and central apps for Windows. Even Go, which is crated by C lovers, has a GC.

Android was built on Java, which is why android phones had (has?) substantially bigger batteries and more RAM than their iOS counterparts. But even iOS apps have automatic memory management through ARC these days.

So are GC-ed languages still bad performance and energy consumption wise, or has GC advanced to the stage that it's completely fine to use in good, professional client side software?

In OOP, is "object" always exactly the same as "instance"? And, are they both equivalent to a physical manifestation in RAM?

If there is an edge case where this isn't true, please, let me know.

    TIA

Do you believe it's worth it to do a Ph.D. in data visualization? I have a background in data science/machine learning but I also want to learn graphics . Data visualization would be a great way to combine these two. Example companies
