    Set Theory question

    Posted: 13 Oct 2018 10:42 AM PDT

Okay, I just started my computer science degree about 3 weeks ago and started with the Maths module.

As it is, set theory is one of the contents in my Maths module.

We started off with easy exercises but I came across this question when I checked to see if i got everything correct. For this question, I got everything but part d wrong and I want to know why:

I wrote 3 but the answer is 8. I know how they got it = total number of elements in the powerset of A (P(A)). However shouldn't it be |P(A)| = 8? and |A| = 3? Question 7d is telling me what's the cardinality of A (number of values in set A) not P(A)...which is why I am confused.

[Database theory] Conflict serializability in transactions without read/write operations

    Posted: 13 Oct 2018 07:19 AM PDT

I'm learning about conflict serializability in an introduction to databases class. I know how to check if a schema of transactions is conflict serializable when there's reads and writes. Draw the precedence graph and check if it's acyclic. But what if there's no reads and writes but unlocks, shared locks and exclusive locks. How do I determine if such a schema is conflict serializable?

Below is a picture of the question. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

    Major/College Courses Advice

    Posted: 13 Oct 2018 06:48 PM PDT

Hello, I'm 19 and going back to school after taking a break of two years to work more for family needs and I want to work in the video game industry.(pretty sure that's what i want to do as I love video games) I found a major at Oregon State University (which works out nicely because my family is looking to move to Oregon) and I wasn't sure if the major was worth taking or if it'd be best I pursue something else. I'll attach a link to the courses that I'd end up taking as a reference.

(Any help would be greatly appreciated)

    accelerated phd

    Posted: 13 Oct 2018 08:41 AM PDT

every once in a while you hear about someone finishing their phd really quickly (usually it's john nash or george dantzig or feynman or someone like that) but i'm wondering if it's feasible for a hardworking mere mortal, supposing you have all of the coursework completed and quals. are there projects (outside of proving some conjecture [which isn't the kind of thing you can plan for but takes just a flash of insight]) that would qualify as innovative enough that they'd be worth a phd? are there examples of this kind of work? i'm thinking something along the lines of a tool/framework that makes some sort of analysis very easy? for example a tool that could translate tensorflow/pytorch code to fpga cores?

As the temperature begins to drop.

    Posted: 13 Oct 2018 09:42 AM PDT

Can anyone recommend me a pair of warm gloves that I could use while coding? Preferably available on Amazon. My roommate keeps the windows open all the time, and I do like it chilly as well, but its not great for my fingers. I need to get my Java assignments done.

Thank you in advance, God Bless.

What is the CS concept to do my program?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2018 09:11 AM PDT

Guys, about 3 months ago I develop I program based on python and javascript to download all images from a website page (e.g. Google Image). The program goals are to collect images as datasets to train deep learning model. My professor asked me to write that into a paper for a national conference. And... I'm confused about what CS concept related can I write on my paper.

The flow of my program: open browser -> search a keyword of images -> then open the console in developer tools ->load all images on the page (e.g. Google Image page) -> grab all images URL using DOM javascript -> download all images by images URL using python program.

I hope there is a lot of suggestion to me. Thanks.
