5 months until graduation, How should I start prepping for web dev interviews? Posted: 12 Jul 2018 03:00 PM PDT I'm a little scared and very stressed to be honest. I really want to get a job in front-end web dev, but my school didn't offer anything related to that so I've been just learning it on my own. I have the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript down. I've dove into React a little bit but I don't think I'll be anywhere near good enough for a job when I graduate. Should I just focus on getting the basics down and learning jQuery or keep going at React the next few months? Should I prepare for data structures and algorithm questions for an entry level front-end position? Thank you for the answers in advance! [link] [comments]
New job is not what I expected Posted: 11 Jul 2018 08:30 PM PDT I've recently moved jobs and during the interview process I think I was misled. Coding quality is poor, team collaboration is low to non existent, no coding standards, no code review. The pay is decent though and I think the company as a whole has a bright future though. I'm a bit confused about how to proceed. Should I stick it out or abandon ship. I moved predominately to get to place that has good code quality and a better team environment. [link] [comments]
Is there a CMS out there for non-tech-savvy people which isn't as bloated as Wordpress? Posted: 12 Jul 2018 06:50 AM PDT Something where people can make their own site and they have complete control over the content with a WYSIWYG editor rather than using Markdown, Twig etc. I'm marketing myself to people who want websites but don't care about web development and just want to add / remove content on their site without it being a complex and arduous process, lol. Anyone else have major issues coming up with projects to build? Posted: 12 Jul 2018 01:50 PM PDT I've sat and pondered a lot on personal projects i'd like to develop and I can never come up with anything worth doing. I have done things like building apps to replace my usual "go to" stuff like an RSS reader and I built my own forum just to say I could but other than things like this, I can never come up with project ideas. Just tired of sitting at my desk looking at all this cool web tech i'd love to try out and having no ideas on what to make. [link] [comments]
Ever had a copyright infringement notice for content on a site? If so, how did you deal with it? Posted: 12 Jul 2018 12:15 PM PDT A client of mine has had an email claiming copyright infringement over an image they have on their site. They are asking payment of $500 to cover usage. The email is from a company called permissions machine and looks legit. However, the image they have on their site isn't hosted on their site. The content is retrieved from an API. The licensing info on the API host site says all content is provided under the creative commons license. So who is responsible here? My client or the API provider? And what can my client do? I've just taken on their site so don't really know what measures the original dev took to make sure it was all above board. But it looks okay to me. Any pointers on this would be great. Thanks. Posted: 12 Jul 2018 05:29 AM PDT Preface: I'm in the midst of learning front-end web development. After having completed my HTML5 course, I jumped into my JavaScript and CSS3 course. CSS and JavaScript basics done, now im on to learning Flexbox, Grid and advanced JavaScript. While looking at other courses, I came across tags I've never seen before; article, section, aside and something else. Did some research and discovered that I'm in div hell thanks to my lecturers exclusively using div and to a lesser extent, span. I've always felt that large HTML code was a bit of a mess to look at. Now I understand why. Do any of you fine folks know of any YouTube playlists or online courses that goes in-depth on HTML semantics? [link] [comments]
Questions about starting out as a freelance developer Posted: 12 Jul 2018 06:31 AM PDT I work a full time job but I'm learning programming in my free time. I want to eventually get into freelancing websites for small businesses. I have a few questions: 1.) For example if I make a website for a restaurant, and they want to change something like the picture or prices after everything is done, am I responsible for that or is the business? I assume the business will know next to nothing about editing their website. 2.) How does hosting go if they don't already have a website? Do I host it for them? I've only hosted with Digital Ocean and Node.Js. Would it be best to learn php? Or even put it on Wordpress? 3.) What if they already have a hosted site and they just want an updated look? Do they hand over their hosting credentials? [link] [comments]

Need help in figuring out what I need to create a food blogging site Posted: 12 Jul 2018 04:44 PM PDT I just want to note that I am NOT looking to use an already made solution like wordpress or sites like that. I am making this site for my girlfriend for fun and learning experience. I'm fairly experienced in HTML, CSS, JS, and some PHP. The part that I'm getting stumped on is how I would go about making it easy for her to make a post, such as a title, pictures, etc. without having to directly access the code. I don't think its necessary but I think I might also want to use a js framework like Vue to learn along the way. Would that be a good idea? Besides Github pages, are there any other sites recommended for free/cheap webhosting? [link] [comments]
Is it possible to create a column that can take multiple values? Posted: 12 Jul 2018 04:41 PM PDT I have worked with Drupal fields in which you can assign an infinite number of a values to a field type- is anything like this possible to do in a mysql database? Like if I am trying to fill out a table made up of different items, where each item can have 0-3 images attached to it. [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Jul 2018 04:24 PM PDT Hey guys. So I am currently working as a summer engineering intern for an aviation company. I work in the Assembly Department though. Not much engineering is being done, I'm basically a mechanic lol. The company I work in is a little old school and does everything pen and paper, all assembly jobs that are sent through the department from station to station are signed on pen and paper, recorded in a paper log and then sent to inspection and then onto the next station. I was talking with my supervisor and he told me he wished there was a system on the computer that would tell him at what stage jobs are at and how many are about to start heading to his station because he gets frustrated since he doesn't have much time to prepare for the unusually large shipments of assembly parts that can sometimes be overwhelming for his already busy mechanics since it usually hits them as a surprise. So I was thinking about just making a web app that does the following. Inputs the part # & Part name and any other relevant information. Then a web page for each station in the department that will say if a part is on its way. I would hopefully do this by making it so that each web page has a section where they would enter the destination of there current assembly part after they were done with it. And I know this might be a little more advanced but I hope that after a certain part goes through the entire process, from station to station, that the information would be saved and they wouldn't have to enter the destinations anymore since the production path had already been previously set. So that way a station can know at what stage the part they may be anticipating is at. Or if there is a large wave of parts that are coming. So I am familiar with a couple programming languages. Mainly Python & Java. I have some introductory experience with Flask for Python. I'm a little familiar with SQL as well. I want to use this as an opportunity to learn as well as perhaps pitch the web app to my supervisor. I'm well aware they could flat out deny the idea but if so I can just put it in my GitHub and maybe stick it in my resume as a beginner/intermediate project. I thought it would just be helpful to ask you guys about where I should start. Any useful references/tutorials that can help me get through this project? By the way. I'm not looking to transform the entire process at my aviation company. I know that's a very unrealistic thing to think. But I could perhaps pitch it as a useful tool supervisors can use to help run there stations a little bit better. [link] [comments]
Devs on Windows - Opinions on Laptops? Posted: 12 Jul 2018 04:19 PM PDT I've been having some issues with my MacBook Pro and am considering Windows options. I have grown to love the accessibility of the Unix system, which makes certain installs so much easier. That being said, does WSL solve it for the most part? If you're a developer on Windows, could you share your tips, and advice on laptop selections? I've been considering a Surface Book/Pro or Dell XPS, but am sure there are options I'm overlooking. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Native CSS or UI? (bootstrap, semantic etc) Posted: 12 Jul 2018 12:18 PM PDT A little bit of context here, I am a noob to programming. I started learning HTML,CSS(Sass),JS about 2 weeks ago and has been enjoying it. I am now OK with flexbox and grid. (Thanks flexboxfroggy and gridgarden) It's so fun to play with CSS! But I noticed there are quite a lot of people who uses UI like bootstrap, semantic and bulma. Is there any real benefit of sticking to only native CSS? [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Jul 2018 01:57 AM PDT Hello. I was planning to remake my portfolio using React(Mostly to get familiar with it) but have read that it's a bad idea for SEO reasons? Is this true? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Working for corporations vs agencies Posted: 12 Jul 2018 05:18 AM PDT I have only ever worked for agencies. I help with hiring new devs so I know what agencies look for in a new employee, I know what they want to hear me say if I interview at one. But I know nothing about working for a large corporation where you work on their stuff only, where people have cushy jobs and stay for decades instead of 1-2 years. I have an interview coming up soon and the people interviewing me have been there for 15-24 years...that's nuts!! I would almost double my salary with the position, if I got the job I wouldn't leave either! So...what's the difference? What skills/personalities do they like to see? Like if I interview at an agency I might focus on things like I get shit done and fast, I have no issues prioritizing things to meet tight deadlines, hopping around to different projects all day, that sort of thing....I imagine those skills aren't as necessary at a non-agency though. Or am I wrong? [link] [comments]
Help with a simple git workflow Posted: 12 Jul 2018 03:52 AM PDT Hello, I have a WordPress theme which I'm using git to version control. The problem is that my repo has my source files in it. When I'm pulling the files down to the staging server, the source files still exist. Is there a way to ignore certain files for certain repos? Or is there a better way to manage this? Best sites to learn coding and scripting? Posted: 12 Jul 2018 03:21 PM PDT I've been on codecademey in the past, since I've come back it seems I cant do anything without being asked to switch to premium, are there any good websites for beginners/intermediate to learn code? [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Jul 2018 02:45 PM PDT WHMCS, time to go! I've had enough of WHMCS, so building my own. Anyone who backs the project will get it free for life. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/xtremeprototype/business-toolbox Sick of the fees, now sick of the induced user limits. How do you make time for your dev/tech projects? Posted: 12 Jul 2018 05:00 AM PDT

Posted: 12 Jul 2018 07:01 AM PDT I'm in a bit of a tough spot. tl;dr: I'm not sure if I should take a new job (that isn't quite what I want) to get out my my current job sooner, or hang around here while things get worse and wait (and hope) for a better opportunity. I'm currently working as a developer for a relatively large agency and have been at my current position for 7 months. Before that I was working at a smaller agency for several years. My knowledge and experience is pretty much full stack development and I'm tired of it. My current job has been getting worse and worse as months go by. To cite a few reasons:
I am pretty done with backend development. I'm always the last step in a project's timeline when most of the budget is gone and there's only a few weeks left. And backend always gets blamed for any issues in a project. There are aspects of backend development too that don't really interest me like algorithm pattern, caching or server optimisation.
This leads to my current dilemma. I am currently looking for new opportunities and am applying heavily for front end roles. However, I am concerned that due to the nature of my work experience, my resume doesn't come off as 'frontend-y' enough despite how I've tried to tailor it that way. I've only had 1 in-person interview so far and that was for a more full-stack position, albeit not in an agency. They are also moving quite fast and, if they liked me, might even give me an offer soon. What I'm stuck with is do I:
I appreciate any advice/insight. [link] [comments]
Good tool for mapping functionality? Posted: 12 Jul 2018 02:06 PM PDT I'm mapping out the functionality of a large project that I'm taking on. It's a lot of JS everywhere. I've been writing documentation of how it works, but it would be nice to start up a visual diagram other than my whiteboard. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Does anyone have experience using Laravel with JWT authentication? Posted: 12 Jul 2018 01:41 PM PDT I took over a partially completed project which is a simple dashboard interface. I had used PHP but never used the Laravel framework so I went through most of the Laracasts about this topic. Rather than use Laravel's built in Authentication they are using lcobucci to generate a JWT token. I am trying to connect this to the very simple login form which has a username and password. I already have a connected mysql database and can send GET and POST requests using Postman and everything works. I am having trouble finding information on how to connect everything together. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be awesome and I am willing to give some gold out! [link] [comments]
How to get content to practice on Posted: 12 Jul 2018 04:54 AM PDT So I'm busy learning CSS right now. Thing is, it's difficult to practice without actual content to style. I'm doing a personal page, with movie reviews and stuff, but it's going to take a while to build all that up. So is there a resource that provides all the HTML code needed and lets you go crazy styling it to your liking? [link] [comments] |
