Is someone making fake traffic to my site?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 06:58 AM PDT

I manage a site for a company that has several different websites for different languages. One guy translates all the content for the spanish and portuguese websites, and recently was laid off because those sites didn't get much traffic and the company is cutting back.

But recently the Span and Port sites have been getting 1000ish views a day, but they are all coming from the same IP range from a company called Hurricane Electric or something. All the hits except for maybe 50~ a day are from Hurricane Electric IPs.

This guy who does the translation sites has been pushing hard that the sites are busy and he should be translating more and getting more money. Is this fake traffic being generated? Or is there anyway this is legitimate traffic? Does all of portugal/spain filter traffic through Hurricane Electric in the US?

How do you learn to keep focus for longer periods of time?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 03:04 PM PDT

Sometimes I find myself easily distracted while I'm coding, and other times I can melt into what I'm working on and go on hour long sprints. I love to program, it's very satisfying to me, so I don't think it's a problem of it "not being for me", rather it may stem from lack of discipline or perhaps I have mild ADD. I've always been this way in other areas of my life, from hobbies to other unrelated jobs.

I'm the type that loves to plan and start projects, but once I can see the light at the end of the tunnel 3/4 of the way through a project, I lose interest (and thus focusing becomes a chore). This is not because I don't want to to see a project finished, but usually because I've overcome and accomplished something that I wanted to learn in that 3/4 of the project. So finishing the remainder of said project becomes mundane to me.

Any tips or advice from any of you that have or had the same problem(s)?

Am I ready to look for a Jr. Front-End job?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 11:40 AM PDT

Hey all! I've been working on front-end web dev for awhile now. I'm fluent in HTML/CSS and some JavaScript. Below I've linked my CodePen and personal site I worked on. Not sure if I have enough skill to snag a Jr. position, so any advice or feedback would be great!

EDIT: Sorry if some of the links are broken on my website. Haven't touched it in a bit.

Bootcamp / School / Self Taught?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 01:36 PM PDT

I was hoping for a little advice… I have decided to go back to school at 32 after a tiring 10 year career as a bartender. I have always been interested in computers from a young age and considered it as a career after high school. I stumbled on amazon affiliate wordpress websites about a year ago, learnt how to make them and earn money. I recently had an epiphany to go back to school for learning everything else about web dev.

A little background...my girlfriend is going back to school as well for 2 years(massage therapy) so it would be good timing in that sense. I have no prior schooling and have only made websites with wordpress, zero coding knowledge. I would like to find a job right away and leave bartending.

I found some options for school in my city(in Canada) and am quite ready to pay the high amount for the nation wide diploma it gets me so I can hopefully get right into the job market. The thing is that I am worried I will be wasting my money on something I can learn from home. I know it will be a big time struggle for me to set aside enough time to actually "study" from home. I work much better when I am secluded from distractions hence why I know going to school will enhance my learning a lot.

I haven't heard about these bootcamps until today and will look into these as an option. I wanted to share the course outline, prices and hours to complete and hopefully get some insight if this is a waste of time or not.

What developer communities would you recommend?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 03:48 AM PDT

I've just read this comment in another discussion: "Be active in developer communities. I didn't learn anything until I talked and worked with other developers."

I believe this to be extremely true.

So, what developer communities would you recommend, other than /r/webdev obviously?

What language/stack would you learn if you were trying to get a job?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 04:07 AM PDT

I've been looking into NodeJS for a couple weeks now and started building apps with Express and MongoDB. But is MEAN really a good choice if you aim to get a job in the industry?

By looking at job ads, I feel that there's much more demand for other languages like PHP and Python and, therefore, other stacks (Python/Django/Postgres, LAMP).

The most required though are Java and .NET, where I currently live at the least (Italy). Same in London (UK), where I used to live for a long time.

Is it really worth going with Node as your "main thing" then? What would you recommend focusing on these days if you were trying to get a job in the industry?

    Tips on landing first job

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 05:41 AM PDT

I've been actively trying to get my first job in this field and can't seem to get any interviews. I've redone my resume at least 4 times and my website twice. I'm kinda lost on what else I need to do to grab the attention of someone in order to get at least one interview to even understand what to work on next. Any tips and tricks after looking at my site?

    P. S. I hope this isn't against the rules since I am asking for some help on taking new steps towards landing a job and not to just show off my work.

How much salary is too much for a Web developer with 3+ years experience?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 04:28 PM PDT

So I am making now €55k a year as a full stack developer in a company in Hamburg Germany, a recruiter got in touch with me about a job in the same area. I am not really interested in leaving the job I am currently at but was just curious on. What is out there, so I went and interviewed with them and showed them some code samples I had. They were really interested and asked me about my salary expectations, so I thought why not shooting to the stars as I already have a job and will not really lose anything if I lost this opportunity. I said €75k. They looked perfectly normal after hearing me, which I didn't expect haha.

Anyway, today evening I received their offer, with 65k base salary plus 10k bonus with a minimum bonus achievement of 50%. Meaning a guaranteed 70k per year.

I am considering to ask my current employer to match this offer. But my question to which I hope to honest answers to is this : is this too much for my level of expertise?

Does Chrome or any other browser block 3rd party cookies via iframes?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 03:59 PM PDT

I'm trying to see if it's possible or if it's typically blocked by browsers to have an iframe from another domain set a cookie but I can't find a definitive answer to this. Does anyone know or have any resources that might help me come to a conclusion here? Thanks!

Are you still using var? (JavaScript)

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 09:50 AM PDT

Out of curiosity, have you moved on from var in favor of let and const? Are you using var exclusively or are you using all three?

I ask because I still see a lot of courses using var exclusively, yet I've seen people criticize those who use var at all in 2018.

[NoobQuestion]How to host a database for cheap?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 02:05 PM PDT

I'm a noob who uses node.js and mongodb for his website. The problem is that mongodb seems very expensive to host as a database, so what can I do to host a database without having to pay 20 dollars a month for database? If there is any that is cheaper I will try to learn it.

Where is a good place to purchase (or get a free) wildcard SSL certificate?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 01:19 PM PDT

I'm starting to do a lot of stuff with home automation. I've had my own domain for years (just assume **example.com**), but never bothered with getting a cert before. Since I have a lot of services such as **foo.example.com** and **bar.example.com** and on several different machines (some linux, some windows) I'd like a cert I can use across all of them. I don't mind paying for it, but IIRC when I bought a wildcard certificate for my business, it was several hundred dollars and the authorization process was a pain in the neck. Is there an easier way for people running their own sites like I am?
