Looking for an "idea guy" to manage me

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 03:02 PM PST

So, I'd like a sweat equity position in a company where an "idea guy" reminiscent of Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, etc. can manage me. Ideally, there would be no pay, but just the promise of a future small portion of ownership of the company I created. Does anyone know any "brains of the operation" guys looking for some mindless code monkey nerds to direct? Also, it'd be great if they had no experience of any kind in the industry and did no research of any kind into competition (I mean, not even a google search). It is mandatory that their description of their company be in the format "like [other company], BUT". So, "like facebook, but...". I would prefer them to have no business or coding skills of any kind, so they'll be free to express their unbridled, uncorrupted creativity. I would also like massive underestimates of the worked required to implement their idea and no concept whatsoever of the time it take to fulfill their ambitions. I would like for their creativity to be unencumbered by concepts like "reality" and whatnot. They should rely completely on me for the unimportant things such as creation of the app, so they can focus on the real work, like telling me what to do.

Are there any positions available like that? Please drop by and pitch me your app at an opportune time, such as a family gathering or social occasion of any kind! Thanks!

Q: Best Practices for sharing login data with Customer?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 12:59 PM PST

I think we all know the drill, we make a page, we throw all logins like ftp, mysql, etc. into a PDF-File and email it to the customer.

People keep telling me "just send a PDF, that's secure"... Imho it is not. A readable PDF is as readable as a .txt file. Stored in an insecure mailbox, just as safe as the mailbox itself.

And the Customer himself would have to create a new PDF every time anyone changes any password, so having it stored in any editable format is probably quite common.

What are your thoughts on the topic? Safe enough? Use online password-manager (like LastPass)? Something entirely different?

It's nothing of pressing concern, but it has been bothering me for a while and I've just been thinking about it again and I thought I ask for input.

I can't stop feeling bad when sending PDFs over insecure email, no matter how many people tell me it's "just fine". Just my problem or do you feel like I do?

    Internal vs External Website API

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 12:30 PM PST

Let's say your website has to provide a REST API for third parties to use. The REST API requirements are only a portion of the website's full functionality. Would you use the REST API internally for the website itself? Or would you create a completely separate API for internal use? Would your answer be different if the REST API must cover the full functionality of the site?

I ask this because of something I noticed on Github, specifically Github Gists. When you edit a Gist on Github's site, your browser ends up submitting a form via a POST request to the Gist's page. What are some potential reasons that Github didn't just use the REST API that they provide for Gists?

If you want to make money creating your own websites or web-based business, you need a critical skill most developers suck at: Digital Marketing.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 04:00 PM PST

So you wanna start your own money-making websites, or maybe you already have some, but you really suck at drawing in visitors, keeping subscribers, and you aren't making the big bucks you want to.

You probably need to foray into Digital Marketing (DM), because it will provide a collection of essential skills you won't learn in any programming class.

Rule #1: DM is first and foremost, a business subject, even though digital marketing issues may be focused on technology. That means you need to change how you look at your website. No longer can you look at it simply from a technical, programming perspective. You also need to see your website the way sales, marketing, and advertising specialists see it.

I suggest focusing on a few key areas: Web Analytics, Advertising, and SEO.

web analytics is about analyzing the traffic that spends time on your website and what they do. It will help you optimize your site. Advertising is everything from social media advertising, ppc, email campaigns, affiliates (such as adsense), etc. SEO is about managing your website ranking on search engines and making sure you get ranked for the right keywords (read: audience)

Head over to the DM subreddits for a more lively, focused conversation. Here's a few I recommend.

Creating an AngularJS app, with a MySQL HTTP REST ORM web service back end in 0.649 seconds

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 03:35 PM PST

Test out the results here - https://home.gaiasoul.com/todo

Browse the code online here - https://home.gaiasoul.com/hyper-ide (read only access)

Check out how it was built (in 0.649 seconds) here - https://gaiasoul.com/2018/01/05/creating-an-angularjs-mysql-app-in-0-649-seconds/

Basically, there's an "new AngularJS project" plugin in Hyper IDE, coming up in the next release, that will create a simple "TODO" Angular app, with MySQL integration, based upon the upcoming Hyper Core (https://github.com/polterguy/hyper-core), which is an ORM REST based library for MySQL (among other things).

Which allows you to have Hyper IDE create boiler plate template code for you, giving you a nice starting ground for your own AngularJS apps, which automatically creates your database, and integrates through Hyper Core with the server back end, using HTTP REST services, fitting quite nicely into Angular's development model.

I realise the "0.649 seconds" parts are a little bit dubious, and I will probably be accused of "Hyping" my stuff again - But I think it's justified, in addition to that the HTTP request, where I create my app, database, and wire everything up, doesn't actually take more than 0.649 seconds ... ;)

Hyper Core is still in BETA, which is the REST ORM MySQL library used in the code - But something I want to focus in developing, in combination with (of course) Hyper IDE ...

    503 Service Unavailable - Wordpress

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 02:01 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

Does anyone know the easiest way to work out what is causing this issue? I've tried to work it out by removing plugins etc but to no avail. Anyone got a go to tool/technique to work it out? I believe that there is some kind of memory leak when I click the submit/update button in the wordpress back end as my host told me the ram keeps topping out.

Study Plan for Front-end Web Development

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 01:48 PM PST

    Hi everyone!

I'm currently a government employee from Brazil looking for a change in my career. Recently i started learning programming using Python and i thought about investing in Front End Development, because is a demanding skill here in Brazil and is easier to enter the job market than Backend Development. This year i will start studying Information Systems at a local University and i looked for resources to dive in on the sides:

Front-End Web Developer Professional Certificate Program W3C

    Mozilla Learn Web Development

    You Don't Know JS

Are these good learning resources to follow? Any hint about better resources, other study plan or what not to do as a beginner?

How are blog articles generally stored?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2018 01:10 PM PST

Apologies for a bit of a stupid question, but I can't seem to find a straight forward answer so eli5 would be great.

I'm picking up HTML/CSS/Js from a basic C++ background. As an initial project, I want to make a template for blog articles with some interactivity. The short premise is that certain key words or sentences can be clicked on to reveal footnotes on the margins (for cases where longer elaboration would take up too much space).

So far, I'm just working on getting it looking and acting correctly. But I can't help but question how I'm supposed to be storing my main text and margin text. I'm guessing most sites don't have the full length articles written right in between <body> </body>. (Which is what I'm doing now)

My default thought was to just store the main text in a .txt file (like I'd do with c++) but it would make accessing the corresponding margin text complicated(?). I'm not sure.

So I would appreciate any thoughts on how to better organize my project. If at all possible, I'd like to stick to using Js out of comfort, but I realize web dev usually utilizes many different tools. Also, I don't want to fall into YAGNI, but I think I would also want to structure this so that text-annotation can be created and edited online (without diving into any files).

Apologies for the rambling, I hope this makes sense, and I would appreciate any help.
