Why does so many people dislike W3Schools? Posted: 03 Jan 2018 12:19 PM PST Am I missing something here? I seriously love this site, in my experience it is the fastest way to quickly look something up, and it covers most, if not all, stuff that could ever find myself wondering about. Posted: 03 Jan 2018 12:21 PM PST Wondering if there are any webdev meetups in the Midcity/Ktown area in LA. Would love to make connections and see what people are up to and potentially find collaborators. Lmk! [link] [comments]
[Help] How do I isolate code that is specific to one element with vanilla JS? Posted: 03 Jan 2018 01:16 PM PST I'm trying to write a simple script from scratch that detects how far a user swipes over an element, or mouse down on desktop. https://codepen.io/TrevorWelch/full/aEyVom/ I seem to achieved my desired effect on a single element, however I used the 'this' property which seems to have made the properties of that single square global. What are the first steps I should take to make this something reusable and to keep the scope of the properties non-global? [link] [comments]

How to save links to categories while browsing? Posted: 03 Jan 2018 10:37 AM PST While browsing, I often come across interesting news stories on several general topics, and I'd like to somehow save them as links to a website of mine. I haven't found a good way to do this, though. I've been bookmarking, then some day going in and creating links for all the bookmarks, but this is obviously not ideal. I'd like to be browsing, find an interesting new story (or old), and click a button (or paste the link), select or edit the title I want, and the category on my (WordPress, Blogger, html, whatever) site, and have it publish there, kind of like Drudge List's look, so I could keep running streams of news on my topics. Is there a way to do this? [link] [comments]
Shopping Cart / Store Recommendations? Posted: 03 Jan 2018 10:06 AM PST My company has a handful of different websites, each with separate users, tools, and purposes. Each website also sells its own products, and has its own shopping cart experience. One uses UberCart, another sells on Amazon, etc... We sell physical products, digital downloads, and online subscriptions. We're looking to normalize our websites so they all sell on the same platform. We're looking for a tool or service that will allow us to manage all of our sites from one dashboard. We want one place to check sales on site A, add a new product on site B, and offer free shipping on site C. Is there a tool or service that will allow us to "plug in" a store page into each of our websites, and have that store page update when a product is added or a price is changed from the central dashboard? Our sites are all PHP-based and most are built in Laravel. [link] [comments]
Used to code alot, Not sure how to start again Posted: 02 Jan 2018 08:18 PM PST Hello There! So, I used to be a frontend web developer (Mostly HTML, CSS) in 2012 when the main task was to convert PSD to HTML and i was earning enough every month. But then I left coding and went into gaming and Now i am feeling completely lost. I know HTML, CSS, PHP, C, C++ but the problem is that I am not able to learn advanced. Webpages on the same VPS linking to the "main site" is good or bad to the SEO? Posted: 03 Jan 2018 10:07 AM PST I have a VPS where is my main site. If I place my client's "static onepage" type webpages (for example local store introductory webpage) also to this VPS and I place my logo in the footer with the link to the main site is it good or bad to the SEO? Need Help Forwarding Http to Https Posted: 03 Jan 2018 07:33 AM PST Hi, I have a little browser game that I created with PhaserJS and host on a Google cloud server with ExpressJS. The domain for the site is "gameof.nina", but often when new users put that into their browser is shows a "This site can't be reached" error until they specifically add the https part (https://gameof.ninja). I'm wondering, is there a simple way for me to take all requests trying to hit gameof.ninja and forward them to https://gameof.ninja? Thanks! Here is my express server code: const fs = require('fs'); const url = require('url'); const http = require('http'); const https = require('https'); const WebSocket = require('ws'); const express = require('express'); [link] [comments]

What's it like working in a web agency? Posted: 03 Jan 2018 12:38 PM PST What's it like working in a full stack digital agency? Not just websites, but proper web apps, mobile apps, digital strategy and branding ect. I study CS in college, but I also love marketing, so I think an agency would suit me. I'd love to spend a couple of years in an agency, and then start my own. So whats it like to work in one? [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Jan 2018 12:03 PM PST Hi there. If you are willing to review my portfolio and first project, I would appreciate it. Please let me know what you like/dislike. I do still need to optimize for mobile, that is my next step. https://patnguyen15.github.io/ https://calm-reef-13980.herokuapp.com/ Do you think I am ready to start applying for web dev jobs? I mainly want to focus on back-end more than front-end, but best case scenario is a full-stack position. If not, my next project ideas are a blog site for me to document my struggles/learning lessons while developing websites, a website for a local bubble tea shop, or a website that can spotlight a person(Twitch streamer) with their stream, IG photos and Twitter post all in one page. Or just to add on to the UFC scoring app on the updates tab. Most importantly, I'm confused on how I can apply to web dev jobs. When I google for web dev jobs, I usually stumble upon indeed, glassdoor, or monster and it seems like there are mostly recruiters rather than companies that are looking. I know I should just apply to those, but are there better ways to find direct companies that need webdevs. Please let me know. Thank you for reading and helping me out! [link] [comments]
Backend Developer tired of backend, considering move to UX. Advice? Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:58 AM PST I've been a PHP developer for the past 7 years. It's mostly been backend stuff, a bit of custom CMS work, WordPress and a lot of Drupal 7 & 8. I recently left my last job as there really wasn't any room for my career to grow and I was starting to feel fed up. In November I started a new job, again as a PHP developer, but I quickly lost enthusiasm for it so I kinda feel that maybe the problem I was having wasn't the company I was working for but maybe I had fallen out of love with PHP development. Now that the Christmas holiday is over and I've had a break I've found that my feelings haven't really changed. I don't have any drive to go into work, I don't like being in the position of "X on client site doesn't work, you have to fix it or no-one else will", I don't like getting out-of-hours calls whenever a client fucks up their own site, I don't like going in to work in the morning thinking "what's going to break today?". One thing I championed at my last job (that nobody else seemed to care about) was improving the admin experience. Basically if you're at all familiar with Drupal you know that the admin area out-of-the-box is horrendous, especially if you just hand it over to a client without any customisation. I always tried to make it as intuitive and user-friendly as I could, but there was rarely any time budgeted for it. It got me to thinking about a career shift towards user experience as it's potentially more interesting to me and gets me away from the back end. Thing is, I don't really know a lot about what a UX position involves day-to-day, whether I'm qualified enough or if there's something I should study, or even if it's a good idea. I'd appreciate anyone else's advice or opinions on this. tldr: Web dev tired of backend work, thinking about move to UX but not really sure what a UX job involves or even if it's a good idea. [Noob] Need guidance on how to execute a fun little project Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:56 AM PST Hey yall, wondering if I could get help on which tools to use and how I would use them to execute this little do-ditty. The situation: We have a barber that comes into the office every other week as an office perk. In order reserve a haircut spot, the office assistant sends out an invitation email to edit a google spreadsheet at a random time on any day. Because there are usually more heads to cut than there are appointment slots, I'd like to automate the process of signing up for a haircut in order to guarantee an appointment every time. The program would work like this: First, see the invitation email come in the inbox, then open the link inside to the google spreadsheet, find a cell(appointment time) that is not already taken, and write in a name. Now I'm just getting started in webdev(designer background) so I'm just not sure which tools would be required/best to use for this case. But I figured this would be a fun way to learn and build at the same time which is what everyone here recommends. I would also like to stay within the javascript/MEAN stack. THanks! Want to freelance full time, should I choose Laravel or full stack JS? Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:43 AM PST For someone wanting to become a freelance web dev, investing in which skills would be most rewarding for the next 5 years: Laravel or full stack JS? The only webdev stuff I know is from 4-5 years ago when I did a bit of Codeigniter, Zend, PHP and WordPress in my free time (I think I was good at it). Things have changed now and Laravel and Symfony seem to be the popular choices. There's also full stack JS (Node, Express, React, etc.). What is a better path for someone who wants to freelance full time for at least the next 3 years? I know I'll have to learn JS anyway (for front end and VueJS with Laravel) and which is why full stack JS seems better in terms of learning curve (no need to learn PHP). I actually started learning PHP7 and WP plugin dev because I got an offer from someone to build a couple of WP and XenForo plugins for them by May. I've started learning them and I really like XenForo. The JS world has the NodeBB forum which is open source. I keep comparing my PHP work to JS alternatives wondering if I'm on the wrong side and if the JS stuff is modern, cooler, and faster. I understand that the grass looks greener on the other side and there are going to be areas where PHP will thrive and same for JS, but as a newbie I just need some good advice on which path is going to be good as a freelancer. Should I continue in the PHP world with WP plugins, XenForo and Laravel/VueJS, or should I switch to full stack JS? Please also suggest recommended resources for someone starting their journey. Thank you. [link] [comments]
bootstrap4 media-breakpoint-only errors Posted: 03 Jan 2018 11:22 AM PST I have this code https://codepen.io/rbeason/pen/jYLYYw The cards look good in LG and up screens, but when collasping down to MD I would like them to only span 2 cols instead of 4 for just the card-deck. The bootstrap4 docs said to use the @include that I have in my SCSS, but I get an error when gulp tries to compile it saying I am including bootstrap as everything else I'm using from it is working fine. What could be causing gulp to think that's not a mixin? [link] [comments] |
