Date picker widgets for setting your date of birth, is a classic example of over engineered UX Posted: 13 Sep 2021 01:54 PM PDT This is just a rant post, feel free to agree/disagree. Or post your own examples of similarly over engineered UX. In theory using a date picker to enter a date sounds like a no-brainer. However in practice this infuriates me. I end up spending way to much clicks trying to figure out how to scroll back to the 90s. The best design for a DOB field, is to just prefill the slashes, and let the user type in the date. Maybe give the picker as an optional widget. [link] [comments]
Do you use Grid to build the overall layout? Posted: 13 Sep 2021 03:08 PM PDT I've seen that some build the main page layout using I usually just let the content naturally fall in to place using something like Flexbox and mostly use Grid for when I want to display stuff, well, in a simple grid (e.g. Is one way preferred over the other? Am I missing something by not utilizing Grid more for layout duties? [link] [comments]

Your Full Stack recommendations for a home-based web server project? Posted: 13 Sep 2021 01:23 PM PDT I hope this is an okay post for a sub for this, but will delete if not. tl;dr - Looking to building a home-based web server for my personal website and some projects and would love to hear your technology recommendations for someone with limited experience in back end. longer version -The goal is to have a safe and reliable web server to host some projects including my own portfolio. I doubt any will have high traffic, the main goal is to use the server in part to learn back end more intimately (getting my hands dirty, as it were) but also as a way to show off to potential employers. And, hey, saving money on hosting services isn't a bad side effect =) I am currently studying to become a full stack developer (my background is in graphic design and front end) and have some experience with the LAMP stack (via wordpress/woocommerce at my current job). So the question is basically what would you -- oh mighty and wise denizens of /r/webdev -- what would you recommend for technologies for building this server? Thank you very much for your time and kind attention. [link] [comments]

Hosting frontend & backend on same server Posted: 13 Sep 2021 02:28 PM PDT Is this a good idea When I scale (hopefully), is it okay to still have that same structure but across multiple servers, all accessible by a load balancer, for contigency/load? [link] [comments]
Help getting started creating a database site Posted: 13 Sep 2021 02:21 PM PDT I'm wanting to create a search site that lets you type in a show or music, and it'll show results of similar content that's been curated and then you can click into that content to learn more about and where to find it. Got not place where to start, what kind of site am I trying to build? What would you use to do it? Should I just start collecting the data I want first and compile it in excel or something? Tons of hits from virginia - isp amazon.com - what is going on Posted: 13 Sep 2021 10:24 AM PDT We build websites. We use statcounter to track our hits. A couple of our sites have recently been hit for a few weeks with hundreds of hits a day from "Ashburn Virgina" with an Isp of "amazon.com". These are static sites (A roofer. A CPA firm). I don't believe there is anything to be gained. Probably the city and isp are being faked. But what could be going on. [link] [comments]

How to disable mobile context menu on long press? Posted: 13 Sep 2021 12:19 PM PDT I'm working on a React incremental game, and am trying to implement a button that you can hold down. Got a simple version working with pointer events, but the problem is on mobile it opens up the context menu. Code example is available here mouse-hold-down - CodeSandbox, you'll have to switch to mobile view in browser to see the issue [link] [comments]
Locating the host of a client's domain Posted: 13 Sep 2021 10:56 AM PDT Forgive me ahead of time for using any incorrect terminology. I'm still fairly new. My client owns a domain we'll call "myclient.com", as it shows in their email address "name@myclient.com". The site has been down for some time, though they still have access to the email address. The client gave me access to their Godaddy account, but the website doesn't seem to be connected to that Godaddy account. There is a different domain name that the client used when they were part of a larger organization, "clientbiggerorganization.com". This Godaddy account has no subscription to "myclient.com", nor is there a subscription to that domain in their payment history. Typing myclient.com into Godaddy shows that the domain is not available. Still, the client insists that that's the account they used for it. With all of the above information, is there any way for me to locate the whereabouts of the domain short of having the client dig through their credit card history to see who they were paying for the site? Also, does it help at all that the client is still using that domain for their email address? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]

What title should I take between Technical Lead and Senior Software Engineer? Posted: 13 Sep 2021 09:36 AM PDT What title should I take between Technical Lead and Senior Software Engineer? I am working as Technical Lead now, but I am a bit afraid that recruiters will miss me out because they won't know I am a senior software engineer, in case of work offers on LinkedIn. Which title would you say benefits keeping and what is normal to e.g. have on LinkedIn if I decide to have the technical lead, what would be the proper title to have, would it actually be "Technical Lead"? Would be "explained" enough for recruiters if I have technical lead as title? Or should I have Tech Lead Engineer? [link] [comments]
Where to host a site for a client? Posted: 12 Sep 2021 11:49 PM PDT I have a site built for a client which is using css/html/javascript + tailwind, and I do not know where to host it. This is my first client as a junior dev, and I've never hosted something professionally. I will be the one maintaining and updating the site as i go. Since I can code and build my own templates what is the best route to go? I have never used wordpress and I don't a lick of PHP. Any tips are welcome! [link] [comments]
To contract web developers: how much should i ask for? Posted: 13 Sep 2021 09:04 AM PDT Hello, I have been presented with the opportunity to pick up some side work. I am not sure how much I should ask for. This company wants to hire me on a retainer, somewhere between 20-40 hours a month. They mostly want me around to make technical edits on their website and to build them tools to help with their work pipeline. This will involve auto posters across social media, some web scraping, a custom dashboard that will allow them to post based on an algorithm (i.e. pop a post off the queue, check and see if its met a certain metric of engagement, then post the next link if it hasn't, keep it for longer if it had) across social media, and automated social media reporting. In the future they also have a new basic website they will want built. I am very comfortable in building these tools for them. I'm just unsure how much to ask for. A bit about me: I've been a professional for about 4 years + CS degree. Ive been the lead developer on multiple websites that have traffic in the millions. I can work in just about any language/technology given a bit of learning time but I am very comfortable with Javascript (FE + BE), PHP, Python, HTML, CSS, C++ && C (though I don't use these very often nowadays), Drupal, Gatbsy, React and database technologies (SQL, NOSQL). I frequently spin up full stack apps (FE, BE, database layer) all in docker. I also am comfortable with basic deployment and server admin of projects on AWS/Google cloud. My googling suggests that the average contract gig is somewhere between $60-80 USD and hour. With my experience and knowledge can I get away with asking for more? Or maybe my experience is base level to get started. I am not really sure! Maybe getting a base rate for the basic website edits retention gig and then pricing out the different custom tools on project to project basis? Any and all insight is welcome. Thank you! Using bots for traffick enhancement considered shady? Posted: 13 Sep 2021 08:29 AM PDT So I have been just casually learning more about SEO as its not really something I am good at but would like to be in the know so once I go freelancer, I could have it as a good extra service. I have been organically generating traffic and searches/clicks to the site using crawlers, social media and such. But its quite slow to climb up the Google results. Not that it matters that much, but I would like to show them that their site is up there. So my question is why is "synthetic" traffic so frowned up on? Shouldn't all tools avalible be used? I have some experience with video editing and post effects and once I got a template pack for transitions and motion graphics, im never going back as its so much faster and I get the same results with a little unique tweaks. So why would't same princible ve used for creating traffic? [link] [comments] |
