Devs who open source their games, why? Posted: 05 Sep 2021 12:25 AM PDT Sorry not being rude just trying to understand. I like the idea of open sourcing my game but I'm afraid that someone will just copy my code/game/assets, "remake the game" , then make profit off my work. I understand that I could possibly protect myself from this via a more restrictive license but I think the costs of hiring a lawyer would cost me more than the profits I'd ever make from my game if I decide to pursue those cases, and if the other person is a corporation or has more money than me, then I'm just screwed out of luck. For devs who have open source their games I'd like your thoughts on why you decide to do so, what benefits you see, and how you reconcile with the fact that someone can just blatantly use your work for their own profit? For example, the ones I'm most aware of are Mindustry and shapez.io. EDIT: Thanks everyone for your responses, learned a lot. Basically, if someone wants to copy your game they'll do it no matter what regardless of whether the source code is provided or not. The benefits appear to outweigh the costs: more community support, better feedback on code, better for the longevity of the game, help from translators, devs might contribute as well, players that want to know more about the game can read the source, etc. [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Sep 2021 09:34 AM PDT I'm in my late 30's and grew up in the 90's. Playing smb3 was basically orgasmic to me as were many other nes games. The only other game that has ever come close on a later system was Super Mario for N64. I took about a 10 year break from video games and it seems like nowadays most successful games appeal to the "skinner box" model and have constant incentives for you to return to the game often and frequently. I can understand why modern games are appealing but I'm kinda dumbfounded why I had so much fun playing nes games? From what I understand, all games appeal to the lymbic reward system in your brain and trigger the release of dopamine which provides a feeling of euphoria and accomplishment. Over the last 20 years, games have become much better at optimizing this dopamine kick. I have 2 kids of my own now and I'm curious if the first video games I introduce them to are nes games, will they enjoy them the same way I did? Or do they need "modern" games in order to enjoy them the same level as me when I was once a kid? [link] [comments]
We made an app that's kind of like a combination of Game Maker and TikTok Posted: 05 Sep 2021 08:56 AM PDT TechCrunch covered us on Friday — pretty wild. Basically we want to make game dev as accessible as using an app like TikTok. So you mostly use emoji and trending images people uploaded as your art, and we try to make our scripting (we call it a "Rule Editor") feel like you're creating the text at the bottom of a Magic: The Gathering or Yu-Gi-Oh card. And when you post a game, it goes to a feed that becomes personalized over time based on what you play, so we match your game with an audience. Would really appreciate feedback from folks here who are just dipping their toes into game development — experienced devs will probably think we're a limited toy. Happy to answer questions about how we built the app/embedded game engine if that's at all interesting. We're a team of 5, mostly coming from AAA/MMO/mobile games. Happy to answer questions about the startup side of things as well, I started working on this two years ago this month so it's been something of a journey. We're only on the App Store, and not in many countries yet. But hopefully we'll be able to ship on Android later this year! [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2021 07:18 AM PDT Heyo! I've thought of releasing an alpha version of my project on Itch in a bunch of months and give it away for free, for people to check out, aswell as to attempt to build up a community around the game way way before a launch of a paid version later. Has any of you done something like this? Would i need to make the paid game a substantially different product to avoid any legal issues? Like changing its name and most of the assets (steam probably won't like it if you give something similar away for free etc.) Would you play a game that is in its very early state, but is free? How can I learn composing music from the ground level? Posted: 05 Sep 2021 07:55 AM PDT It's been a while since I wanted to make video game music, but the only problem is... I DON'T KNOW HOW TO PLAY PIANO OR ANYTHING RELATED TO MUSIC! I don't even have a favorite Music genre... So, What should I do to begin learning piano or composing music (especially similar to Undertale and Friday night funkin')? [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Sep 2021 09:20 AM PDT I recently formed an LLC to separate the personal/business liabilities of releasing a game, but my Unity license/etc is all under myself personally. I was wondering if anyone knew of a guide somewhere specific to game releases for what I need to do to make sure I am properly releasing my game under my LLC? Questions that come to mind: - Do I need to get any new licenses to release something under an LLC and keep it separate? - When releasing on the google play store/apple app store/steam do I need to make a new account? Do i need to have the business buy a seperate Apple Developer License/etc? [link] [comments]

My source codes are okey and they they have affected by my last commit but it seems git files were in use while computer restarted and they are now corrupted. Does anyone know what is the solution, thanks for help. [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2021 12:25 PM PDT As title says, I'm working on a mobile endless shooter where you face endless enemy waves, upgrading your weapon inbetween. I always sucked at creating UI/UX, but here it feels more important than ever. Here's a screenshot of how it looks right now: https://imgur.com/a/aAf5jyw (sorry for the outside link) My initial thought was to use progress bars, however since the values can go up to infinite and don't have a max value those make no sense. I've been reading about how to learn Game UI and people recommend to copy UIs similar to what I want until I get the hang of it, so... TL;DR: Do you know of a game that has an infinite stats upgrade system with a nice UI? [link] [comments]
Procedural entity appearance using "Lerp"? Posted: 05 Sep 2021 12:14 PM PDT I'm looking for information as to how to procedurally generate entities (humans, animals, robots, whatever) using something akin to "Lerp" between two states Here's what I want to do:
Any idea how to do this? Or where to find info on this? Or how this is called technically? I would ideally like to do this for all aspects of the entities. So, a more "aggressive" entity would have an idle animation that would be more aggressive, and being able to do this granularly, matching the corresponding property. Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2021 12:07 PM PDT I wanted to ask wether it's possible to take a mobile game, change it's files for example the music or visuals/images (my specific purpose is a rhythm game) and download it to my phone for personal use? And if it is, is there a tutorial for it? [link] [comments]

Question for the optimization experts!!! UE4 to Quest2 Posted: 05 Sep 2021 11:45 AM PDT Hello, Question for the optimization experts!!! We built a project on Oculus Quest2, but it has a lot of problems with optimization and graphics. We are trying to do optimization through Device Profile for Android in UE4 (because we want to support both PCVR and Quest versions in the same project), but we couldn't find enough information on how to do it. Maybe you can help with best practices and Device Profile settings for this? Thanks [link] [comments]
Using a publisher for publishing games in China Posted: 05 Sep 2021 07:40 AM PDT I recently received an offer from a company called "The Wind" which published mobile games in China. They wanted to publish the game in China because they "thought it had great potential". For this, they would need the source code and 50% of the revenue generated. My question is, does anyone have some sort of experience in this, and would this kind of deal be worth it? It's quite an old game that I don't really care about but I also don't want to get scammed. Maybe there are other publishers with better deals? Let me know your thoughts! [link] [comments]
An indie game studio co-founded by 2 people - The Dev & The Investor Posted: 05 Sep 2021 12:35 AM PDT Hello! I have a question on a hypothetical situation. Any thoughts, comments, and speculation is much appreciated, thank you! 😊 Hypothetical Situation:Someone wants to make an indie game studio to create games and they have the skills to take on most roles (i.e. programming, art, design) and have experience in shipping a few games. Another someone with no gaming industry knowledge is interested in co-founding the studio, but only act as an investor/funder for all expenses regarding equipment, marketing, etc. The investor would be 100% hands-off in the development process. Nothing has been developed and registration/legal processes haven't started. Questions:

Is fixing your timestep still a thing? Posted: 05 Sep 2021 02:15 AM PDT So years ago, I read this famous article about fixing your game's timestep for better results. What I am wondering is, is this still relevant in the age of high refresh rate monitors? Logically I can understand the benefit of this approach, but it seems like it should be very hard to find a timestep which is going to work for everything from 30-240Hz. Or do modern games just run their game logic at the max refresh rate anticipated? [link] [comments]
How important is a certification? Posted: 05 Sep 2021 06:50 AM PDT Heya guys, so I've been using Unity for quite a lot of time now (about 2-3 years) but not in a professional environment. Mostly on my own and helping other people creating their games both 2D and 3D. The truth is I don't really have any games uploaded yet but that's mostly because I've been working on other peoples games rather than my own. All of this is from a programming perspective. I am mostly clueless when it comes to art but I do like the idea of game design in terms of ideas, brainstorming, balancing etc. I should also mention I am on my way of getting a computer science degree but we had absolutely no lessons about game development or unity there, which pretty much means I've been working on unity mostly as a hobby / side-project. I have been looking up the programming certificates in unity recently and I've been wondering if they are worth it. Has anyone tried them? Do you feel like they are a necessity to enter the industry as a game developer and get a job position? [link] [comments]
VsCode or Visual Studio for Unreal Engine 5? Posted: 05 Sep 2021 06:48 AM PDT I'm new to game development and I want to get into 3D game programming and design for a project on Unreal Engine 5 (I'm learning C++ and the basics of UE5 so that on full release I am able to create a game without major major obstacles) however, I am unsure of the differences in regards to UE5 for using VsCode or Visual Studio, this question may be stupid but I am genuinely curious, is the way that you import the code different for both IDE's or is that a stupid question? Any Tips? Deciding to start working on a proper non-gamejam game of my own... Posted: 05 Sep 2021 10:31 AM PDT As a bit of background, I've made a fair few games over the last 18 months or so doing game dev on and off in my free time. I've recently come across an idea that I think i'd like to work on as a proper project of my own and was wondering if anyone has any tips for me to help me in the process? Either way... any help is massively appreciated :D [link] [comments] |
