Monthly Getting Started / Web Dev Career Thread

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 05:00 AM PDT

Due to a growing influx of questions on this topic, it has been decided to commit a monthly thread dedicated to this topic to reduce the number of repeat posts on this topic. These types of posts will no longer be allowed in the main thread.

Many of these questions are also addressed in the sub FAQ or may have been asked in previous monthly career threads.

Subs dedicated to these types of questions include r/cscareerquestions/ for general and opened ended career questions and r/learnprogramming/ for early learning questions.

A general recommendation of topics to learn to become industry ready include:

    HTML/CSS/JS Bootcamp

    Version control

    Automation

    Front End Frameworks (React/Vue/Etc)

    APIs and CRUD

    Testing (Unit and Integration)

    Common Design Patterns (free ebook)

You will also need a portfolio of work with 4-5 personal projects you built, and a resume/CV to apply for work.

Plan for 6-12 months of self study and project production for your portfolio before applying for work.

Is PHP necessary or useful when making websites?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 01:08 PM PDT

I've seen loads of people hating on PHP, but I am confused as to why people hate it, what its actually used for, and if its going to be replaced with something like node.js or something else.

How much to charge for website (using bought template) with maintenance fees ..?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 01:56 PM PDT

    Hi lads (and ladies),

I have a question - I did a little shameless self promotion in a newly opened bar today, and offered my services to develop, host and maintain a website for a bar.

I'm a qualified applications developer currently working as a cloud/Linux administrator for large business infrastructures. I officially started my career as a web developer some 6 years ago, and although it's not my main profession anymore, it's something I can still do.

So I thought, for a little extra money on the side, what harm can it do. I'm able to set up the domain, hosting, E-Mails and databases that are needed for say, running a WordPress instance.

My question to you guys is, I don't want to invest time into designing and developing a theme, I'm a full-stack developer (so to speak) and I'm no UI/UX genie.

How much would you charge for getting a website up and running with a pre-built theme (with some tweaks and adjustments for the client).

I threw out a wild 1,500 Euros for the website and initial configuration, with a 30 Euro monthly fee for maintenance, server space and E-Mail storage.

Does this seem fair, or am I over/under-estimating?

    Would like some feedback,

    thanks peeps.

    Made my first website

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 05:48 AM PDT

So I just made my first website using only HTML and CSS and was wondering how I should proceed to make it a little bit more easy to use. I want to make my own blog and now I'm lacking the knowledge on how I should make it easier to publish articles and make it auto publish it on the webpage without having to re-upload the website everytime.

I want a login for myself to write and style the article then chose what subject or whatever so it lands on the right page. And also I get like a small mini article for people to be able to browser my posts. I kinda wanna try to make as much as possible by myself but will probably import code and stuff in the future but this is a learning experience for me.

I appriciate all the help I can get :)

    Wordpress theme editable texts

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:49 PM PDT

I'm developing a wordpress website using understrap starter theme. It's a pretty simple one page website but I'm not very expert with webdev.

All the website text content is now in the code of the homepage template.php.

How can I have the text editable in the wordpress editor?

Maybe using something like advanced custom fields?

Thank you very much for the help, really appreciated

    Modern GraphQL full stack course?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:39 PM PDT

Are there any good free or paid GraphQL video courses where you can build a full stack application with authentication and deployment? (preferably not an eCommerce store - like Wes Bos' course)

I've been trying some reading materials but I'm just terrible at learning by reading unfortunately.

I already know a bit of express, mongo, and react. Something like Typescript, GraphQL, Apollo, React, and any DB would ideal!

WorkNinja Vs. The Local Tech Company

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:31 PM PDT

    Hey there!

*TL;DR: Local computer store threatened me that if I did not work slave labor for them and started my own website shop creation business that they would "bury me". I need help on how to do SSL and Domain hosting stuff so I can stick it to the man and make my own website business.

    Background on me

So I am a budding web developer, website maker, keyboard jockey. I have been working on and off on websites for a couple years now. I started with HTML and CSS and have lately been making simple websites in my area (middle of nowhere USA) using WordPress and available plug-ins. It works for what I am doing and what my customers need. I have a few customers that were desperate for a website that they came to me for help and I am now wanting to go on my own and do more simple websites for people as a side hustle.

    The conflict

I have been talking to a few people in my tech circles and through them the local technology company contacted me. They were wanting to get into web design and development and were looking for someone to help them. The owner and I got together at the local coffee shop and talked. Her terms, I do websites for her(duh haha), she would not charge the customers an upfront fee but would instead charge them more in monthly maintenance under a 5 year contract, where I would get a percentage of that. Her example: she would charge 100 dollars a month for maintenance and I would get 50% up to 90% (depending on how much work I do, we started at 50 but she balked and went to 90 pretty quick) of that. She said it takes about 6-8 hours to make a website and that I would be "even and making money" from each website after 6-8 months and that I would then get this revenue for 5 years since the contract and that it was "free money". I asked about updates to the clients websites. She said that she did not want to send a bill to people and that changes would be included in the $100 a month fee. If there was a bigger "overhaul" that we would talk to them about renegotiating the contract and charging project time (was not discussed how much I would get). The more we talked the more that the little alarm bells were going off in my head. She was a terrific salesman that could sell mudpies to a baker. The more that we talked the more questions that popped up. I asked if they had any leads right now that I could work on. They did not. I asked why they did not want to charge for the first website build, she said that customers were all about subscription based services now and that they would not want to buy the website if they saw the price, "sticker shock".

    The Rebuttal

I do not see that this works out in my favor. I told her that I was less interested since I would never really recoup my loss of designing and creating the website in the first place and that if there were changes I would make them during my "free money" time. They reiterated that I would be flush after 6-8 months (Magic!). I asked what benefit they bring me since they do not have any leads. She said that she talks to businesses all the time that need help and need websites and is constantly asked about making them. I said I could do that if I go off on my own and not have anyone taking my money. She said that it would be difficult for me to do the SSL and Domain hosting parts. It would be best if I just had someone else do them. The other websites I did were overhauls or the customer already had everything ready, I have never done one where I have to change SSL or Buy the domain, or host. I said that we could maybe do it where I start my own business and I give them a finders fee and we partner up that way. She looked me in the eye and said that she WILL have a website ability in her shop and that if I went this way that they would focus on taking me down and "bury me". End conversation.

    My Questions

Is this normal? I feel like I am doing all the work and not really getting any of the benefit. How hard is it to do SSL certificates? What about hosting? I would not think it that hard. Any help? I was hoping for some guidance on what way I should go. I do not feel comfortable working with her after the threat. But, I want to do my own thing and start my own business. I am just a little unsure where to start.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

When is the best time in UX to ask for payment of a service?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 10:40 AM PDT

Are there any resources out there that talk about when is the best time or place to mention a website doesn't run on goodwill alone? I'd love to offer my time for free...but I have bills to pay too. I offer a service, not a physical product, so I am asking for money in return for my time.

When is the magic moment where you spring on a user that things costs money? Are there hard and fast web design principles that state "Only after they clicked through 3 pages do you ask" or "Only after they spent more than 20 seconds on the site".

I found some info here on UX considerations

I am also undecided for what payment system to use...but that is a very broad question that I don't anticipate will go over well, considering there are so many facets. It would be like asking what is the best flavor ice cream to try.

For context, I imagine a site like OnlyFans had to go through the same process. They offered online streaming, but also had to grow a user base, etc. but at some point they needed to say "Hey. If you want to use this site, you need to pay to see XYZ." And they did this in a way that allowed them to grow instead of people clicking away. I hope this isn't too broad of a question.

getting around the CS degree req for jobs: what ELSE should I build?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:12 PM PDT

    So far I've got:

MERN stack CRUD application with various endpoints allowing users to add and delete data + authentication with PassportJS, lookup with MongoDB.

React COVID tracker that pulls data from various API's and displays it in table format with pagination

Headless WordPress site, 5 pages with custom CSS and Fetch API for pulling WP data

Among other things, but those are probably top 3 I'd show employers. Somehow this has only been enough to (begrudgingly) get interviewed by places that don't give a coding test.

How do you prevent a simple webpage from being copied from its source?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 06:01 AM PDT

So I built a webpage in html/css/js for a project of mine a couple years back and then found several months later that someone had copied my entire website onto their own domain. Like, exact same, with my logos, contact info, etc. Probably trying to phish or scam my users, but I didn't have the money/time to go after them.

I'm just wondering how you prevent this from happening. That website was literally just an html, css, and js file uploaded to my server so super easy to copy.

I regularly build with Vue.js which I believe makes it harder for people to inspect the code but I'd like to just use vanilla js and get the same result.

    Thanks

    Fullstack webdevelopment laptop recommendations

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 05:39 AM PDT

I'm starting a full stack web dev bootcamp in a couple of weeks and currently have a Lenovo IdeaPad 320s. Looking to upgrade to something I can run a virtual machine on and that can withstand opening multiple IDEs with a good amount of storage and decent battery life. Right now, I have my eye on the Acer Aspire 3 (a315-57g-76zw) and MSI Bravo 15 (R7-4800H RX5500M). Gaming ability is a plus but not necessary and my budget is up to a 1000$.

Would be awesome if someone can help me out with this as there are so many choices and it's kind of hard to tell the difference between laptops with nearly identical specs. For example two laptops might have intel core i7 same generation but still have different processors?

Not looking to get an apple at all for now.
