20 free to use electronic tracks

    Posted: 25 May 2021 03:09 AM PDT

Hi, I'm Muchkin. I make music. Here are 20 electronic tracks I'm giving away for free use.

You can use them in any projects, commercial or not. Just please credit me. And maybe notify me somehow — I'd love to see where they end up.

The license is CC BY, except for five tracks in "PRO registered" folder. Their use is a bit more restricted, but only if you're going to perform them publicly (you're probably not). See the Readme file for details.

In games, player's story should be more important than your story

    Posted: 24 May 2021 04:15 PM PDT

This is not my statement, I'm interested in hearing your opinion - how much do you agree with the above statement? By "your story" I mean of course the story prepared by the developers and told by the game, and by "player's story" I mean whatever choices/actions the player performs over the course of the game.

I'm making a game to help kids learn geography, will I be able to distribute it in China if I include Taiwan as a country?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 08:42 AM PDT

Could I, for example, only leave out Taiwan for those who select the Mandarin language option, or would having it in other languages still make it ineligible?

Are there any rules for the App Store or Play Store that matter here? If I remember right Apple has some question about topics offensive to specific countries, but I haven't tried distributing to China before.

EDIT: I should note that this is one subgame of several educational games in the same game.

VRMocap: Animate Unreal MetaHumans with VR-driven motion capture

    Posted: 25 May 2021 09:40 AM PDT

How is it done: Sloremancer movement and combat

    Posted: 25 May 2021 08:25 AM PDT

hey guys I was wondering if anyone has played this game and could give a quick rundown of how the charecter movement works. When I try to implement this with only 2 left and right turns I get some weird results with my Y axis. If moving up with W and forward my player always looks the opposite direction, down with S appears to do the same. And it appears to always left with just so happens to be at the top of my list on the animation Blend Tree. Its like it just reads it from top to bottom.

    Question for freelance game developers

    Posted: 25 May 2021 02:18 AM PDT

I am looking at the possibility of freelancing as a game developer but am not sure if there's really a market for freelancers in this field - when I check on job listings I hardly see any positions for game developers on a contract basis. Therefore I would like to hear from other developers who are doing it. If you have been working as a freelance game developer I would love to hear your experience. In particular the questions that keep popping up in my head are:

    - I know development companies often outsource some parts of games to other companies but is there really a market for individuals offering freelance game development services?

    - Do you specialise in a particular part of game development when offering your services, ie mechanics, physics, etc.?

    - What kind of companies do you usually work for?

Any other information you feel like sharing would be highly appreciated. Just trying to get a feel of how doable it is to freelance as a game dev and what it is like.

Has anyone here built a community up from nothing? How did you do it?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 11:51 AM PDT

I see various guides on community building but a lot of them seem to be mainly theory from people who have never been through the process themselves.

I understand that the theory behind these things are important but I wanted to pose the question to people who have gone through it all.

How did you build your community? What worked and what didn't? What tips do you have for people going through this process?

I'm very interested as this is one of the lesser discussed topics on here.

To anyone that worked with the TopDown Engine asset, is it worth it?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 08:02 AM PDT

I was looking around for assets I could possibly use in making a top-down game, and came across the TopDown Engine unity assset. From reading on what they offer, it seems to be really nice, but when looking it up online to see what other people think of it, i couldn't really find anything.

So what im wondering is, if you've worked with it, is it worth buying, and more importantly, using it to make a game. And whether it is possible to make a full game with it.

Any companies that create high quality first person motion captures that are not on fiverr?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 11:15 AM PDT

I've gone the fiverr route with creating fps gun capture animations, but every single time the effort put in is so low even when I pay them more than asked. I am having trouble finding a website or company that will create high quality animations, I must not be looking in the right place.

What to do at the end of a sprint (agile)

    Posted: 25 May 2021 10:51 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm new to the agile method, so please excuse my maybe naive questions :) I have following situation: we're working with agile and have made a milestone called "Intro" which will be divided in multiple sprints. We have made a list of all the tasks which we want to do for the first sprint and assigned some tasks to people. Now to my questions: 1. What happens if, for example, the artist is finished with all his tasks. Do you assign him new tasks (which don't belong to the intro which is the milestone) and add them to the existing sprint or do you start a new sprint for the Artist? 2. What happens at the end of a sprint if you still have open tasks? Do you simply push them to the next sprint?

    Thanks for the help!

(Long) I am lost with my game, looking for advices

    Posted: 25 May 2021 10:20 AM PDT

Hello everyone. I'm making my first commercial mobile game called Ranger Saga. It is a 2D Action RPG, you aim with your bow and shoot monsters, while avoiding their attacks. While aiming, you can't move, and the aiming is done eith the movement joystick while holding down the attack button. And also, you can dash 2 times consecutively, with a slight cooldown that comes after it. I've been working on this game since January and I am in need of some advice.

TL;DR: I am worrying that my game is not fun enough or easy enough for most people and I won't be able to pay for Firebase if people don't play my game.

I explained the mechanics briefly above. I bases these mechanics on the Bow mechanics in the game called Hades. I really liked the playstyle of it, and at the time, I was struggling to find a simple mechanic for my first serious attempt at an mobile Action RPG game, so I decided to use this mechanic.

It has been over 5 months now, and I finished 95% of the technical side of the game. I can now focus on more content and polishing. But now, I started to worry that the mechanic is not fun enough. I gave the game to some of my friends, but I don't have almost any who plays mobile games, so their feedbacks were not really helpful. The game is really simple: you kill monsters while staying alive. Levels are some preset layouts that I created beforehand, and the spawned monster types are random. Right now, there's only two enemies, which conveniently use bows for immediate testing.

Lastly, I implemented Firebase as the backend of my game for cloud saving, remote configuration, hacking protection, cross-platform accounts etc. When the game is released and if people play the game, I'll need to pay for Firebase. To pay it, I will include IAPs later when the game has more content before releasing. So this alone makes me worry that if the game is not fun for everyone but some people are playing it, I'll have to pay from my wallet and I don't have a job right now.

By the way, since I save the progress directly to the cloud, user has to be online while launching the game and before quitting the game to have their progress saved.

I have several things that I think I can do: 1. Make the game like Archero so it can be playable by one hand and appeal to more people. 2. Continue with the current mechanic. 3. Continue with the current mechanic, also drop Firebase and implement platform-specific cloud saving. I may need to alter data models, which may take time. 4. Just continue, add more content, more monsters etc. Find people to test your game and receive feedback from.

If you have an advice, I am all ears. I have been jumping from project to project, hoping to finish the new one each time. I don't wanna jump to another one, not until I see this game to the release. Even if I end up stripping some features, I want to release this game. For my own sake.

    Thanks for reading.

What's the current biggest challenge for a video game artist or creator in his/ her daily workflow? What is the current solution, but is there a better way to fix it?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 04:18 AM PDT

I try to understand the daily challenges a video game artist or creator face and want to see which kinds of solutions would be a good helpful tool.

I know this question is quite generic. But, worth to start off from here.

You guys have any experience with top down AND isometry?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 09:50 AM PDT

    Hey!

I'm about to start a new 2d farming game, inspired by harvest moon and stardew valley.
But I'm insecure about the perspective I want my game to be. I think generally isometric is not as sucked out as top down but otherwise I think the controls might be a bit worse, like when youre working on the field you can't just hold one key and mouse button to edit every tile.

Any of yall have met this problem in the past and can give me good advice (also in context to a farming game)?

    Thanks in advance.

    Another mocap question?

    Posted: 25 May 2021 09:22 AM PDT

I'm from Louisiana and am really interested in mocap acting, however, there isn't anything here that teaches/does it so I was wondering, can getting into another field of gaming help one jumpstart a career in another in the long run?
