Job advice - Am I being unreasonable? Posted: 16 Jan 2021 02:39 PM PST Hello everyone, I have a work problem related to work from home, and how my employer is acting. So, late last year, I found out me and my GF are having a baby, expected in May. Now money is going to be tight, and we live in separate towns (about 1 hour away). We decided to move to her town as she'll have more support there. Now when I told my boss late last year that I'm going to be a farther and that I plan on moving away, I told him that I'd love to work from home. His reply was "we don't usually do it, but as you're moving out of the town, I don't see why not" A few weeks ago, I email him and HR to get confirmation of this, and was met with a "maybe" style reply, basically saying they'll trial it for 1 month. I raised my concerns about why it's important for me to do remote working, and I've offered to be flexible whether it be 1 office day or 4 office days when needed. My concerns I raised was money, I'm paid £21k as a full stack developer, my rent/bills will be about £1k a month, and my GF will only be on £600 a month on maternity, so her contribution will be quite small. My other biggest concern was expenditure on the commute, I worked it it'll be 400 miles a week, my car costs about £60 for a full tank which is about 420 miles. We get 1 week free parking at work, other 3 weeks, the cheapest I've found is £3.50 a day, which is £50 a month. And lastly, working from home is important as I want as much time with my family as possible, as it stands I'll have to be up about 6:30, and leave about 7:20 to make sure I'm parked and into the office by 8:40. When I've visited my girlfriend straight from work, I used to get to hers about 6:30pm. I see this as an issue because I don't feel I'll get to spend anytime with my new born as he'll be in bed before I am home. As we are still looking for a place to live, I've said that'll be find a 3 bedroom property so I can have a dedicated quiet office space. We're struggling to find properties at the moment, and it could be a case of, we take a 3 bed property in a town next to my GFs meaning it'll be a hassle for her to see family and she'll have to transfer her job, compared to taking a 2 bedroom in her town if my boss gives a confident "no". I'm on furlough at the moment, but I have done a few weeks work from home last year with zero issue. I feel there's a lack of trust as they think I'm going to spent more time with my child than I will working, even though I've told them I'm dedicated to making it work and want to get a private space. I'm unsure where to go from here. We are playing guesswork on if it's worth getting a 3 bed, and what our budget is as I could end up paying £300 travelling to the office. I'm scared to approach the subject again with him, as I want long term work from home, 1 year minimum, and if he decides to say no, then I'll want to look for a new job where remote is an option, or closer to home, so I can be with my family more. If he knows I'm unhappy with the decision he'll want to protect his business by making sure I am replaced properly, but surely he won't want to hire a developer before he knows I am definitely leaving. At minute, I'm in talk with another company, basically just testing the waters to see if it'll right for me. I know it's wrong but I'll also use it as leverage so if I get a solid job offer but I am not 100% about the job, at least I can go to my boss and tell him about this new position and why I'm taking it, so he'll maybe offer to do more. I'm so stressed with everything, and I don't know how to approach this best. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post. [link] [comments]
Posted: 16 Jan 2021 02:35 AM PST I just finished my first website. The backend scrapes giveaway urls (gleam.io or other providers) from all over the internet and puts them into a database. This process also includes scraping the individual giveaway pages to save entry numbers, time left and other things in the database. The frontend then displays it in a nice way and lets you sort, filter and seach easily. I also hope for it to be quite fast and mobile friendly. The technologies I used for this were: Frontend: React.js, CSS, HTML (hosted with AWS Amplify) Backend: Django (hosted with AWS ecs), Postgres (AWS rds) Here it is: https://www.giveaway-list.com/ [link] [comments]

[Showoff Saturday] - I made a 4X Sci-Fi Strategy browser game during covid Posted: 16 Jan 2021 06:00 AM PST Hey everyone, during the covid-19 time I decided that I wanted to realize my greatest project to date. I always wanted to play a game like Stellaris or Endless Space on my phone but a project / game like this never existed. That's why one day I decided to make my own version! I took me some time to get started because the scope of the project always threw me off when I even thought about it. But about 8 months ago I finally got myself to work on it and here we are. Of course, I doesn't have all that complexity of a AAA 4X strategy game but I am adding new stuff almost every day. It has a matchmaking based system and can even scale on its own (it uses Vultr's API to create / manage servers and a bunch of shell scripts since I don't like Kubernetes that much). The matches currently consist of 100 players and can be played around 1-2 months. It also has a fair amount of timers (but not that much) so that every player in the match has a chance to keep up. Currently I have around 10 players testing it for me and providing me with feedback so I can polish it more before releasing it to the public. The stack I made the game with is: Frontend: VueJS / NuxtJS / Phaser Backend: Elixir / Phoenix / Rust / NodeJS If there are any questions / feedback, please tell me :) Here is the link if anyone wants to try it out: https://www.stellar-invictus.com/ [link] [comments]

Trying to create an app using Svelte and Sapper. Should I separate my BE from the FE ? Posted: 16 Jan 2021 03:01 PM PST To explain it more thoroughly, I'm gonna use Svelte and Sapper. For Sapper to actually work, I need to run an express server for SSR. Couldn't I just use this server for managing all my BE requests or is it better to use a different server, only for my API. I already thought of the downside if I ever want to switch BE technology, but I don't think I will be moving from node. At least not in the near future. [link] [comments]
Ideal "project management" tool for a solo developer. Posted: 16 Jan 2021 10:43 AM PST Today i was searching for a good project managment tool for a solo developer. I can't find anything that is simple and do the bare work without 1000 not needed features and label that are displayed on my screen. So in the effort to find it, I wrote what a good project managment tool should have for a solo developer. What do you think? any suggestion on a tool that follows those rules?Do you have suggestion to be added on the list? I made a chatbot that teaches you JavaScript Posted: 16 Jan 2021 08:54 AM PST I was tired of books and long videos that teach JavaScript, so I created a course taught by a chatbot with bite-sized content, flashcards, and quizzes that you can use on your phone iOS: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/jax-chat-to-learn-javascript/id1540001384 [link] [comments]

Is hosting a dev environment on a separate cPanel on my Production VPS host isolated enough? Posted: 16 Jan 2021 12:47 PM PST I'm looking for a convenient way to host my dev environment in the cloud (not locally) so that I can work on it from any machine without having to sync the files. I previously achieved this by creating a dev subdomain on my production server, but I installed a Ruby package or something (it was a long time ago) and it took my whole server down. I want to avoid this in the future. If I separated my dev site onto a separate account (cPanel) in WHM, would that avoid borking my Prod site if I mess something up in Dev? [link] [comments]
Posted: 16 Jan 2021 04:27 PM PST Hi, I'm sure it is unlikely that you will answer to such a question but if you will I plead you! I am investigating into how websites such as cs.money work, as in how they're bots work or how it's possible to link items from csgo into a section like in here where the user can see all the items up for sale and buy them, are they directly from steam market or are these items just kept in a bots inventory from which the API is taken, I please for you to answer and if you know any sources or communities that could help me understand how this works and how to build a similar system! Best e-commerce framework/api to use? NO WORDPRESS Posted: 16 Jan 2021 04:04 PM PST Hey guys, I have a few possible jobs that require an e-commerce site which is super cool, however in my past experience with e-commerce sites in Wordpress has been terrible ( i dont have 'full' control and it sucks, especially when trying to match a finished UI design and woocommerce requires specific crap ) I just want to be able to just make a site simply, have it be jquery, vue, or react and just be able to pull products and have an easy payment integration. Is that too hard to ask? I dont want to re-invent the wheel with developing my own whole e-commerce API. Any good e-commerce API's out there that I can actually use with any frontend framework? I can have a minimal backend that can handle contact forms and some authentication, but not all the checkout+products+inventory and all that. Please let me know if you guys have used any good e-commerce API's edit: words are hard [link] [comments]
My friend and I created a simple workout tracker. We would love some feedback! Posted: 15 Jan 2021 10:34 PM PST My friend and I built a workout tracker in a week as a fun side project at We used Next.js for the frontend and FaunaDB with a GraphQL API for the data/backend, and Chakra UI for the styling. The site is hosted on Vercel since it works so well with Next. The authentication is still a bit iffy since we just used auth0 and the design is not to my liking yet as we both have no design background. We would love to receive and feedback or suggestions for added functionality. We are planning to improve the design, add the ability to share workouts and implement workout progression in the future. Thanks guys! [link] [comments]
I made an inflation adjusted wage calculator Posted: 16 Jan 2021 03:49 PM PST I built this inflation calculator that lets you compare your wage growth against different assets and indexes such as CPI, stock market, housing, etc Many people wonder why even in spite of continued wage increases, goals such as home ownership seem further and further away - this tool will shed some light. Best image serving host/server? Posted: 16 Jan 2021 11:27 AM PST I've been pouring over countless image host/serving sites and can't seem to settle on one to handle my business websites image serving. I am leaning towards going with Googles Cloud Storage. Any recommendations on either an open source option or is Google Cloud Storage the way to go? [link] [comments]
I wanted to share a lesson I wish I knew as a web dev when I started 6 years ago. Posted: 16 Jan 2021 03:12 PM PST Earning trust is a privilege. It's only when we have trust, that can we ask someone to stay on the sites we build. 5 steps to earning trust... Step 1: Tell users what you can do for them in 3 seconds or less. Step 2: Place a Call To Action above the fold. Step 3: Build Authority Step 4: Secondary call to action. Step 5: Repeat the Call To Action again and again. If you're interested, here's a video on the topic I made. I love webdev and am building a youtube channel around it. [link] [comments]
