Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:15 AM PST Not sure if this kind of post is allowed, but basically with Covid, I wanted to volunteer more and since it's hard to do that in person, is anyone looking for a mentor? Some background about me, I'm a senior Test Engineer, but I'm self-taught. I've worked from start ups to agencies all the way up to Amazon. I'm more than happy to help out if you are looking at how to get started or stuck with some projects. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jan 2021 06:08 PM PST After years of trying to break into the market, being mostly self taught, I got my first role as a Junior Software Developer! I start on Monday and I am so happy, i've fought so hard for this and it feels so, so good to finally get the role! After so many interviews and rejections, I decided to take it completely seriously and upgrade my portfolio with new work and I finally got a role. Didn't know who to tell so I thought i'd tell you guys, I'm just so happy! EDIT: After much request, I will be making a short blog on my portfolio to help out any other juniors who are looking for their first role. I will update you guys in the coming days! Just had my first ever technical interview! Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:31 AM PST Not sure if this type of post is allowed, but I just wanted to celebrate that I had my first technical interview today for a position as a junior front end developer 🎉🤞 I've recently made a big jump in my career after learning to code on the side of my full time job, and just finished a web development bootcamp! I was a bit down the past weeks as it's really hard to get a first job experience, and got rejected so many times. No matter what comes out of the interview, I'm so happy I did it! It went well, had to solve the FizzBuzz challenge and a few JavaScript questions. Lost my mind when asked about prototypal inheritance but otherwise it was fine 😁 What was your first experience like in technical interviews? [link] [comments]

Posted: 15 Jan 2021 03:43 PM PST I currently have a web application under construction and I've just implemented Google Sign In. I'm just looking for opinions if it's a good idea to store passwords for google accounts since authentication would be done through the GoogleAuth API making a password redundant. Opinions? I created a Micro SaaS in less than 48 hours, and it was fun! Posted: 15 Jan 2021 05:34 AM PST Side projects take time and are often abandoned when they drag on. So, I set myself a challenge, to complete a micro saas project in less than 48H. I don't want this thread to be self-promotion, but rather to start a discussion with the community about the challenge of making a site in a short period of time, what it can bring. If you want the link to the project, I'll put it as a comment! It is not a revolutionary concept, but the most important point to accomplish a project in such a short time is to be realistic about your capabilities. The most important thing when creating a site, in 48H or not, is the tech stack. We have incredible tools to create at lightning speed. Here's what I used:
Concerning the cost, everything I used was free, so the site cost 2€, the price of the domain name. Creating a website in such a short period of time forces you to focus on the most important features. I struggled with that on previous projects where I procrastinated, making useless features, and trying to fix a part of the design no one cares about. With just 48 hours, you have to get to the point. In the end I think it's a very good way to start a project, to get to the essentials quickly. It also allows you to keep building the site publicly, to get feedback from the start, ideas of useful features from the user. To conclude, I would definitely do it again, maybe with the community! A WebDev Hackathon would be cool. Don't hesitate if you have any questions, I would be happy to discuss all this in comments. Important point, I don't have a CS degree. I started to web development two years ago in addition to my full-time job. I still consider myself a beginner and still have a lot to learn... [link] [comments]
Feeling a bit discouraged and stagnant... Posted: 15 Jan 2021 10:33 AM PST Hi guys, I've been at my company for 3 years now, and I am going to quit today because I'm not happy with the way the company is operating. I have a couple leads for new jobs, and will focus on getting that next job hardcore in the next couple of months, hopefully, weeks. I really want to go into web app development, but I only have some React experience and primarily WordPress and Drupal coming from an agency. I have another agency interview today, and I will definitely take it if that's the only offer I get, but I've been applying like crazy to web app companies, and had little to no luck, a couple of 1st round calls. I built my portfolio with React, and have a lot of internal projects I let these companies know about, but WordPress jobs seem to be the biggest hit for me, although they seem like less than the web app jobs now. It seems they want 1-2 years of React, but how do I get that without the first job? I've been building things and I know I'm a great dev, so I just don't get it. It's getting to my head making me think I'm not talented enough, or that I'm stuck as a CMS developer for life. Are these companies not willing to take a chance on somebody who hasn't worked on it professionally? is it because I don't have a bachelor degree? a recruiter told me I should try to get out of agencies and these companies have way more money/internal structure that I need to get used to. But how do I get used to that if I can't land the first one?! is it Jr. that I have to get? a lot of these jobs look like Sr. TLDR: I'd love to build web apps, and grow as a javascript developer, but feel stuck in agencies. Edit: a web app company just got back to me on e-mail that I thought was a miss! But I'm afraid I will fail the 2 hour code interview coming from a WordPress background, any tips?! Just finished my first web app! Loggie a firewood delivery app! Posted: 15 Jan 2021 01:43 PM PST Hey, I just started learning javascript and reactjs 2 months ago and I've finally got to a point where I'm ready to launch and start doing business! I live in San Diego and I'm only a couple blocks from the beach. On the beach there are tons and tons of fire pits where people gather around in the evening. One of the problems if you don't plan to have enough fire wood your bon fire gets shut down early. That's where Loggie comes in! Loggie is kind of like uber mixed with doordash. Users drop a pin the fire pit they're at and then purchase their firewood. This sends an email to me with their location and how much wood they ordered. I then load up a bike trailer with wood and attach it to my e-scooter and head down to deliver it to them. There's still plenty of work to be done with the app (ie I need to automate the password reset rather than manually doing it) but for the most part it's functional! Check it out at https://loggie.app! [link] [comments]
Should you wait for an API response before displaying the data when making a POST request? Posted: 15 Jan 2021 10:28 AM PST I'm making a facebook clone web app. In this example i want to make a comment on a post. When i write my comment and click submit i make a POST request to the server to insert that comment into the database. Should i display the comment before the data is inserted into the database and before i got a response from the server, or should i wait for a response from the server saying the data was inserted and then display the comment? Developers, what do you do when are stuck and don't what to do? Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:29 AM PST I know a lot of people here been there, and it really sucks. I've been learning for six months as of now. I did learn thing like HTML/CSS, things like flexbox, grid, styling stuff, I don't have problems with that. did learn JS too, from basics to thing like promises, async/await, modules(even though the only one I use is the standard one), DOM manipulation...etc. Then, it was time to do my own projects. I had an idea for an image gallery to practice on using unsplash API. the moment I started, didn't know what to do. Questions like 'What should I put here or there?'. 'doesn't look good enough' all the way to 'I just suck.' Has anyone went through situation like this? I'd love to hear any suggestion or advice. Thank you! [link] [comments]
Stock image generator for HTML CSS projects Posted: 15 Jan 2021 03:46 PM PST Whats the best site, like pixabay, that is geared towards providing stock images as content filler? has to return any image type of choice (gif, png, jpg), any requested dimension of choice ( L x W), any effects (i.e. transparency) [link] [comments]
Looking for a UI designer and developer for a CCG. Posted: 15 Jan 2021 03:33 PM PST Hello all, I am a solo hobby dev who is creating a CCG. Up until now, I did all the work by myself but it gets harder to jump between components as it gets bigger. I am looking for a UI designer to design the game screens and a web developer to implement those designs. Project itself is in playable pre-alpha state. It has - account creation and management. - a deck builder, - collection/crafting, - constructed - 2-people draft - 170+ implemented cards Here is an in-game screenshot of the current state: https://imgur.com/a/A2NV1VR Here is the repo: https://github.com/pseudohuman92/Visitor-the-Card-Game Project consists of a Java backend/rules engine, a React + Redux frontend and Firebase for DB. About myself: A 28 yo computer science grad student so have experience in many languages as well as knowledge of advanced topics. My expectation is at least 10 hours of work per week. I tried with lower but it brings project to a halt. I value clean, maintainable and high quality code more than fast and messy results. I expect similar from my team too. To give an idea, I wrote the engine from scratch 3 times already and constantly refactoring it while adding new functionality. This is a hobby game so it will not generate any revenue. Therefore there is no monetary compensation at the end of it. Send me a message if you are interested. [link] [comments]
How do CS:GO betting websites work in general? Posted: 15 Jan 2021 03:32 PM PST Hi. I am curious about how do cs go betting websites work behind the scenes in general. First, do they use some API to know which team won? And how the users deposit and withdraw the money? And how they are trusted by their users anyway? Thank you guys in advance. [link] [comments]
Identifying cause of intermittently extremely slow response times? Posted: 15 Jan 2021 03:25 PM PST I have a React app hosted on Netlify, a node/express server on Heroku, and a postgres db on aws RDS. The site is usually fine, but sometimes I get a multi-second wait time for data to load. Sometimes it's instant. It's frustrating and seemingly without errors or timeouts or anything. So I'm not really asking how to fix it, but for any advice on diagnosing it. My Heroku response time graph doesn't really seem to indicate any response times above. I installed New Relic, which seems nice, but I still don't see what's causing such long load times. Could it be that netlify is taking too long to communicate with Heroku? Is that reflected in the response time? I would guess it is...I don't know, maybe it was my own internet or something, I just feel like I deploy things and then I lose control. Any guidance would be great, thanks! [link] [comments]

In regards to ecommerce, are passwords and payment info the main security threats? Are there others? Posted: 15 Jan 2021 11:10 AM PST I'm making my own ecommerce app just for fun to have a big project to work on. And I was curious other than passwords and payment info, what are some security problem areas? Thanks for any advice! [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Jan 2021 02:55 PM PST I want to start by saying that I haven't worked directly with a database in over 5 years, and never built one from scratch. Though when I did, I worked with sql. I'm in the process of converting a desktop application I built into web hosted (at least the backend, the front end is still desktop). My application previously had the clients data stored locally in jsons. Each Json stored a class object, with basic things like lists and dictionaries. These things only stored ints, strings, bools, or date objects. One json (or really up to 10 versions of one json) stored a 3 dimensional array. Each item/cell in the array stored a list of two strings, or a list of two date objects. I'm throwing the backend into a serverless container and of course can't use jsons to store data. My final remark is that I'm using google cloud for the serverless functions and would like to stay in that ecosystem. Thank you for your help! [link] [comments]
