We are publishing our writing manual for visual novel developers

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 08:19 AM PDT

Howdy. I'm the head writer for a visual novel. Over the development process we got a number of people, devs and players alike, asking about our creative process. We prepared a writing manual detailing how we do it and we're publishing it in parts.

Most of it is about how to improve writing in general, not necessarily for visual novels. Hopefully it'll be useful for devs working in other genres.

    Here it is.

which art style would you prefer / choose for a slice of life game ?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 09:21 AM PDT

I am currently working on my slice of life game , a mix between sims (but only one char) / visual novel / farming (or rather working) sim. While I am making good progress on the "backend" I cannot decide on the artstyle or even viewpoint (first person / 3erd person / iso / mixed)

I know this isn't much to go in but maybe you could tell me which image popped in your mind while reading about it.

Bonus question , do you (as game dev) take costs into account when deciding on art style (as in , pixel art is cheaper than x <— just an example , don't know what is cheap or if there are any differences at all)

How to keep motivation to develop your project when you feel burn out?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 12:58 AM PDT

Damn every time midway of the project, I just don't feel like the project and want to abandon it. How to deal with that?

What are some good places to promote your game?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 05:38 AM PDT

I've tried twitter and reddit. Reddit acually works really well for me. Twitter doesn't seem to work at all. I suspect this is because I'm making a simulation game and it's hard to compres the game in a 5 second gif. Besides Reddit and Twitter, what are some other places I could promote my game? I don't feel like the game is ready to mail keys to youtubers, streamers and press but I also don't want to ignore marketing in the meantime.

Do I need to learn C++ to use Unreal Engine 4?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 10:49 AM PDT

I started learning Javascript a few weeks ago, and now I see that apparently Unreal Engine 4 uses C++.

Will I have to learn the entirety of C++ before using Unreal Engine, or can I just use those blueprint stuff without having knowledge on C++?

Also, just as a side question, would I be able to create a full 3D open-world (roughly the size of Cape Town, South Africa irl) on a high-spec laptop?

Do you know anyone who has sold their game directly to players?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 06:48 AM PDT

I understand the value and importance of distributing games through known and established platforms, but it can be disheartening when you're also at the mercy of algos and a lot of "unkown" factors/variables. Things like Steam Data Suite are an attempt to provide more clarity, but even that still has limitations in a world where users are interacting with content on various devices and proper attribution is still a challenge.

I have heard some stories of developers or studios selling directly to players via their website but was curious about what you have heard more recently regarding this type of initiative.

I think the consensus of those who know of devs that have attempted this will mostly be "Yes, but they couldn't generate the traffic needed" .

Assuming traffic isn't an issue (I know, it's always an issue) what else makes this concept potentially work/not work?
