Posted: 21 Jul 2020 01:39 PM PDT Self taught dev here. It's been extremely difficult finding a job even after almost a year of self studying. I believe I have a good portfolio, it's been reviewed and updated many times by my software engineer friends. But I have absolutely no luck getting a call back. I go on the job boards every day and it seems like there's less job postings per day. The competition is fierce. Should I just take on a survival job to get by until the pandemic is over and then apply to web dev jobs? Assuming the competition isn't so harsh after the unemployment crisis is handled [link] [comments]
WebDevs from Germany: What to keep in mind when starting out? Posted: 21 Jul 2020 12:13 PM PDT Hi there! I'm currently thinking about starting out as TypeScript/AWS Full-Stack freelancer in Germany. For those who are doing something similar: Any advice? Specifically around Germany, like legal structures, health insurance etc.? I do have a nice mix of business and tech knowledge, but I don't want to stumble into this without doing my research first :) [link] [comments]
Someone cloned my website and I have questions Posted: 21 Jul 2020 12:27 PM PDT I am learning web development and built a website to help me progress my learning. That site is remotejobhunter.com, a search engine for finding remote jobs. I was searching on Google to get a better understanding of what it looks like in search results, and I came across this site: ww.laserliter.com As you can see, it's my site! I don't own lasterliter and am very confused about how it got created. So, here are my questions:
I have no idea what to think about this, so any guidance or insight anyone can provide would be super helpful. [link] [comments]
Authors of libraries: how do you design your APIs? Posted: 21 Jul 2020 05:30 AM PDT There are many design decisions that together can make or break the experience of a someone who is trying to use a 3rd party library. How do you design your APIs? Do you just hammer it all out with code, or do you write plans and do some sort of entity-relation diagrams? If you have an interesting methodology or know of good design tools suited for this task, please feel free to share. [link] [comments]
Is it normal to struggle with CSS positioning? Posted: 20 Jul 2020 11:07 PM PDT I get the gist of everything flexbox/grid/etc but getting things to do exactly what I want is endlessly frustrating. I literally spent like 5 hours messing around with a form and it's elements and trying to make it look put together and evenly spaced and everything and it was driving me crazy. Is this something even experienced web devs go through? [link] [comments]

How should I implement a side drawer menu in Angular? Posted: 21 Jul 2020 03:55 AM PDT If you press "add to cart" in this website, a side drawer menu comes out for the cart. This is my intended behvior for my websites kind-of-cart. I have already implemented this in Angular in CSS, but I am having difficulties with it. First one is that the component is eagerly loaded so its bad for performance. Another one (which ties to the first) is that the side menu's info is based on what the user has clicked on to toggle it, causing errors on the first time the app launches. Should the component be a route? Should it be something else? [link] [comments]

I'm looking to collaborate with someone for some real world team development experience. Posted: 21 Jul 2020 03:09 PM PDT This may not be the correct platform for this.... But here goes. If you consider yourself a web developer but can't seem to find a job - just like me - maybe what you're lacking is experience. Employers like to see that you can work on projects together, as well as upload code to GitHub and make pull requests and contributions to open source projects. I personally have never worked with another developer on anything, and I think the experience would be invaluable. I have a working knowledge of Java and the Spring Framework. I also have some experience in using HTML and CSS. Currently I'm developing my skill-set in the Bootstrap API and diving into JavaScript. My goal is to update my old project - a mock social media web-application. I would like to give it the finishing touches it needs to be a working application. I would also like to finish the front-end so that it looks presentable from an end-user perspective. Here's a link to the project on GitHub https://github.com/jayJavaGGDev/public-jdevimin-tech. Just download the code and open it up in your IDE of choice. I prefer IntelliJ when it comes to developing in Java but that's just me. All you need to do to get it running is install MySQL and create a new database, give it the name 'jdevminweb'. Go into the main file (tech.jdevmin.web.app.JdevminWebApplication) and update the dataSource bean to be your username and and password. run the program from main just like a normal Java program and it will automatically start the server - thank you, Spring Framework! TLDR: Check out my project on GitHub (https://github.com/jayJavaGGDev/public-jdevimin-tech) If you have any notes on the code or - ultimately - if you decide you'd like to finish this thing as a team, please leave a note in the comments section of this page. Blogger theme development docs? Posted: 21 Jul 2020 02:59 PM PDT I've been tasked with developing a couple of themes for blogger (Google's platform). They're very popular blogs, and client wants them updated (theme has not been updated since 2008ish). I haven't had to do blogger theme development for many years. I'm genuinely struggling to find the documentation for developing blogger themes. Anybody know where the docs are? Or any useful resources? [link] [comments]
Tutorial for Chat room with IRC? Posted: 21 Jul 2020 12:14 PM PDT I am wanting to build a chat site for me and my friends that uses HTML/CSS and IRC (so I can connect from my terminal). I am having a hard time finding an example or tutorial, does anyone have one? [link] [comments]
How can i get the current page on nav bar box a different opacity? Posted: 21 Jul 2020 03:21 PM PDT So i have a horizontal nav bar and all pages in their own box. I have a division ID for the nav bar and made and ID for the unlisted list (ul). I then gave each page a class in the list (current page with its own class and the others all share a class) I set opacity of the nav bar pages box to 50% using #id li {opacity 50% } etc I then try to set the opacity of the current page active on the nav bar. Ive tried many ways but no luck. I need to set the opacity for the class of current page inside the list inside the navbar division to 100%. [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Jul 2020 11:25 AM PDT This might be a fairly easy project, but I don't know JavaScript so I need your help. I only know HTML, CSS and C++, if that can help. I need to make a small "Stranger Talks" page which takes a user's contact details and stores it and then randomly displays the contact details of another user who previously gave his/her details. It's for an internal demo project for my college, so it's fine if it's unencrypted. Then, the user need not put his/her details again. A simple button randomly gives them the contact of some other person when they click on it. So cookies, or a login based system. Their details can also be seen randomly by anybody else. I know people get paid to do this stuff, so you might be reluctant to help. Simply showing me the way would be fine. Thank you very much in advance! [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Jul 2020 01:34 AM PDT Hi! I love emacs, but the deeper I go into react programming, the harder it gets to use. No indentation or syntax highlighting for GraphQL and Styled Components, web-mode constantly loses syntax highlighting and must be reloaded, unhelpful quotes being added for me where they shouldn't be. I tried VSCode and it has so many slick and convenient features, but feels way slower and more sluggish than emacs, I don't want to switch, I'm still more productive in emacs despite all the issues. Did anyone manage to create a good emacs config that works well for react webdev? Can you please share? (I did post this question on /r/emacs, stackoverflow, and emacs stackexchange, but received no helpful replies so far, so I'm hoping maybe you guys could help?) [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Jul 2020 01:03 AM PDT So a little context. I work for a software house that is ISO9001 certified; we have strong quality management processes in place for our applications, which is great (especially considering the type of clients we work with). We have detailed SOPs outlining how any changes to the applications we produce and maintain are to be carried out from scoping, to development; QA, to change management review. I manage the marketing team's web development team. We currently manage 7 marketing websites, and any development for our marketing automation and CRM systems. We don't work on any of the applications. There's no interplay between our marketing systems and the applications we provide to customers. When we make changes to the site, we still have to go through our formal QA teams, and speak to our CAB before we can deploy. I know we're on the larger side in terms of global businesses, but I'm wondering whether other companies that have strong change management processes also run their marketing website(s) through the same level of scrutiny and control. I'm not too fussed about it, but obviously I get a lot of push back from senior management about the additional time this adds onto the process. I figured if other similar companies do the same, it's a way of pushing back and saying we're not the only ones in the boat and that it's part of the price of being as big as we are. How do I implement in page tabbed browsing like in salesforce lightning Posted: 21 Jul 2020 02:08 PM PDT I am trying to see how this can be done in Javascript, and I haven't found a good guide anywhere. Has anyone worked on a similar project? I want to be able to open/close tabs within a browser page and have the open tabs be remembered https://youtu.be/qO6rhFAEK2M?t=270 is a good example of what I mean [link] [comments]
Is there any way I can restrict access to server-less functions? Posted: 21 Jul 2020 04:02 AM PDT I plan to use Netlify or Vercel's serverless functions feature in my web app. One issue is that anyone can inspect the network tab and make their own requests. While there is no way to hide the network requests, is there any way I can restrict calling these functions from only my website? [link] [comments]
Web components, best way to arrange a internal library of them? Posted: 21 Jul 2020 01:06 PM PDT So I want to convert older web app and and break out a bunch of page elements like charts, widgets etc into web components, what's the best way to structure a library of web components.. one file per web component ? Multiple components per file. [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Jul 2020 12:50 PM PDT Hi there, A brief question on the legal issues involved with web scraping. Would there be legal issues involved with using a web scraper on a large venue site (something like airbnb) and then re formatting the titles, brief description and image, then posting it to my own platform, but then linking the user through to the original page on airbnb where it was taken from? At the end of the day it would work like a kind of search engine just using the infomation existing previously on larger sites. Would I need to give "sourced from" in the displayed card? Will any of this spark legal/ethical issues? Thanks in advance [link] [comments]

Where you start for a collection management system? Posted: 21 Jul 2020 12:15 PM PDT I have very little experience in development, but i want to make a card collection manager similar that of Hearthpwn. I know i'm probably a ways away from being able to do that, but could someone help me set out a road-map for learning please? HearthPwn is effectively a Card Collection Management System for the HearthStone card game. It allows you to sign up, maintain a list of cards you own, share decks you've created, and check if you have all the cards required to create certain decks. [link] [comments] |
