The most absurd "Junior" Dev job listing I have ever seen. What's the deal with this?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 12:01 PM PDT

    The listing itself:

Urgently hiring a Junior Full Stack Developer

    Essential qualifications:

    • Experience of both server-side and client-side programming environments. with at least 4 years of experience developing, shipping, and maintaining customer-based applications

    • Deep, applied mastery of multiple back-end languages (such as Python, NodejS, Elixir, Ruby, etc) and modern web technologies (HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, Vue, and React)

    • Knowledge of client-server architecture, network API (REST-based) practices,

    • Good understanding of server-side CSS preprocessors, such as LESS and SASS

    • Understanding accessibility and security compliance {{Depending on a specific project}}

    • User authentication and authorization between multiple systems, servers, and environments

    • Understanding differences between multiple delivery platforms such as mobile vs desktop, and optimizing output to match the specific platform

    • Proficient knowledge of a back-end programming language

    • Integration of multiple data sources and databases into one system such as mongoDB

    • Design experience - send us your portfolio or examples of your design work in graphic and web design (at least 3 examples of each)

    • In-depth knowledge of HTML/CSS/JS - you will design and build templates and customer websites using our custom CMS

    • Management of hosting environment, including database administration and scaling an application to support load changes

    • You have a strong portfolio of work that demonstrates the thought process behind every design decision

I know this looks like a joke, but I found this on Indeed and the company is reputable. I'm a Junior with 2 years professional experience and I have nothing like "deep, applied mastery of multiple languages and technologies" and a strong portfolio that shows what a genius I am.

It seems to me like this company wants a senior dev on a junior's salary. Am I wrong?

Studied Software Development in College. It's been 2 years since I've last coded. Looking for some online programms to get me back into it.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 05:13 AM PDT

    Hello all.

About just under 1 year ago I graduated with a BA in software development. I didnt do that well with grades and without any experiance I wasnt able to land a job leading to me just working odd jobs for 1 year. I know i need to get back into it and was wondering what would be the best courses online to take to get back into it and get some projects under my belt. Free or paid I dont mind.

My strenghts that I would like to play on were Java, C+, angluar. But im not opposed to getting into webdev or andriod studios if there is a good course for it.

Where is a good place on Reddit to get my resume/cover letter reviewed by senior devs / managers?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 11:24 AM PDT

I'm not sure if that place exists, but I could definitely use some help. I was a Junior working in Java/SQL for 2 years, then I was laid off due to the shutdown. I've sent out about 100 applications now, and so far, I've received only rejections.

In my defense, the vast, vast majority of jobs right now appear to be for seniors, or the occasional "Junior Developer: 6 years of X language required."

But, I'd still love some eyes on my stuff. Where should I go?

How to make money as a teenager?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 05:40 PM PDT

For context: I'm a 16 year old whose pretty proficient in iOS development(swift) and also know python pretty well. I've created published two iOS apps for fun, and played around with Django before. While all this while I've done programming mainly cause I just enjoyed it. I'm finding less reasons to code lately as theirs not much reward or incentive for me to code. Is their anyway I could earn money with the skills I currently have, if not I'll gladly learn something else, but something that's profitable. I've heard freelancing is pretty much the best way to earn money like this, but I'm not too sure where to start. It would be great if you guys got some advice for me! Thanks!

Can I be successful as a programmer without a degree in Computer Science. And with a diploma in Computer Programming?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 12:11 PM PDT

I want to be a programmer. Actually, my dream education is to get a Degree in computer science, it sucks that I know what I want to do in my life, but I just can't do it. (I'm not taking the right math classes, and it would take 2 years extra high school just to get all the math's I need). So instead, I decided I'm going to get a Diploma in Computer Programmjng. Does anyone here know if I can be successful, or find a good job, or make enough money to live comfortably with a diploma in Computer Programming?

How to notify from server to client?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 08:51 PM PDT

I have a rest api which would be consumed by a WordPress plugin. This plugin will create new objects in the website if there is new data present in the api.

The thing is I don't want to check the new data from the client side periodically. I want the server to notify the client that it has the new data and the client should fetch it. In this way I hope I could reduce the server hit count comparing to the former method.

Is there a way or a protocol from the server to the client communication without the client requesting first?

Are there any resources and code examples for terrain erosion using height maps?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 07:31 PM PDT

Hello I'm trying to create a terrain generator, much like Gaea, World Machine, World Creator, etc., and set up a basic node editor. In my program, I would want to have some really good erosion on the terrain. Are there any easy to understand (don't know much about reading research papers so understanding terminology is really hard) papers or resources on implementing an erosion algorithm on a height map.

I want to make a basic 2D animation program. How do I go about doing this? What do I need?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 06:44 PM PDT

I want a program that makes reasonably simple animations, like for game assets.

I have some experience with Python and Processing.org, and I have Spyder installed on my computer.

I have been trying to make my software using Python and the libraries Numpy, TKinter, and PILLOW, however I have come to the realisation that I don't really know what I am doing or if I have started in the right place.

So how do I start ?

Is Spyder an okay IDE to use, and are there any other libraries or programs that I should install? Again, I don't really know what I am doing.

is programming harder than stuff they teach in school?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 05:05 AM PDT

im certainly not best programmer but i also feel like im fish in the water when I code. everything makes sense perfectly and i was wondering if coding is harder than the stuff they teach in school cause i had always the worst grades and even dropped

i hated school for that. also society gave me this stigma of "bad grades == this person must be stupid" so according to my grades people would assume im often one of the dumbest people in the room

ive been coding for years now and ill be soon releasing my product that may or may not take off but feedback was positive

    anyway what do you think?

one of things i like about coding is that u always have instant access to data whether it be variables, code, other scripts, some diagram or knowledge/examples from Google

when you code theres no issue of you lacking data, so all thats left are your logical abilitiess. where on exams you cant make decisions logically WITHOUT the data, and you cant open google during exam. so like even if you were most logical person that ever lived, you will have bad grades if you didnt study the data beforehand (and rememberized it all)

    Filling Gaps

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 06:05 PM PDT

Hi y'all, looking for some advice on what gaps I need to fill to make the move to a software engineering job. I have 2 years of experience working as an industrial engineer at a large company. Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering, learned some Matlab in my coursework. In my current role, I've learned SQL, Tableau, and Python to help with data analysis. Haven't done anything too fancy with Python, learned what I know using a few basic data science courses on datacamp.com (using pandas, numpy, etc). Anyways, I'm looking to make the move to an entry level software engineer job. My plan right now is: 1. Take a boot camp for Python in software engineering. 2. Build an application in Python.

Does anyone have recommendations for boot camps? Any other steps I should take to fill out my resume? Any advice is appreciated! 🙂

    Circuit and boolean satisfaction

Hey guys, I think I found a way to solve every possible answer to a SAT problem in polynomial time before I know it's a np-compelete problem, my question is what can I do with it? Is there an actual use for it or it just a hard problem that is famous for sake of being hard? If there is, what's the use for it? Is it worth investing my time?

Assistant with artificial intelligence and learning ability

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 04:57 PM PDT

I wanted to ask how you feel about a voice assistant who will be able to self-learn. It just seems to me that it would be just super. This could earn and help people. In such an assistant, many functions could be implemented. Such as emotion recognition by voice or even video. Many other interesting features could be implemented. I want to try to do something like this. But first I want to know how you would react to this?

I have a giant list of names (75k) with 10 hyphenated names I'd like to delete, is there a shortcut?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 04:35 PM PDT

EDIT: Should say 10k hyphenated names

I control-F'd for a hyphen and I'm going through them one by one deleting these names, but there's got to be a faster way. Right now they're in Google Sheets. Basically I'm trying to get rid of duplicates like "Anna" and "Anna-Lee"

    Any tips would be appreciated.

Designing the query layer in CQRS

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:56 PM PDT

I have been studying up on microservices and in particular the CQRS pattern presented well by this video. I think the command part is easy to understand for me as long as I embrace the eventual consistency and fine with it. However, what should happen when you do a simple query against the denormalized query layer using its API. I am thinking this way because you will probably do lazy loading of denormalized data to the query layer as the queries come right? Especially if that data you are querying for is really an aggregation of data scattered all across micro services, do you have to resort to a massive orchestration of firing fetch data event with some sort of context ID, and all microservices in turn publish their data with the same context ID so that denormalizer can listen and fill the aggregated data to its layer and finally respond back to the client?

    College degree vs. skills

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 12:06 PM PDT

I'm currently a software engineering student at university. I hate prerequisite classes with a passion, and a lot of a degree is fluff (generals, electives, etc.) - I feel like i'm wasting my time at college when I could be learning about programming exclusively.

Would it be more worth it for me to pass up on college and do a bootcamp? or is it just better to bite the bullet and go for four years to get the piece of paper that will get me into the door for work?

Is the culture changing to the point where college can be optional, or will become useless in the next decade or so?

(And I only say useless because I am investing 4 years of my life and tens of thousands of dollars into it.)

I'd love to hear some thoughts.

    Thank you.

Edit: outstanding answers, thanks for the help!

    Know java but cant program

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:28 PM PDT

This seems like an odd question, but I can say that I know java but I don't know how to or where to start creating a functioning program. I'm a senior in high school and took AP computer science which was based on java, and I have also completed codewithmosh's ultimate java course. So I know java, but I don't know how to program in java.

    any help is appreciated :)

    Lightweight C server lib/tech recommendation

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 11:27 AM PDT

Hi! I am looking for a recommendation (library or technology) for a command server that can run inside my program to which I can send commands from a client program running on the same machine. The approach must run on Linux and Windows and preferably be written in C.

For example, my program is running, and I would like to change its state without going through its UI. I would like to open a telnet-type shell (or any other CLI) which connects to my program. I then would like to enter commands and see responses back from my program.

I can throw a Lua interpreter into my program and feed it commands, what I don't know how to do is let some other process attach to mine and communicate. EDIT: I'm familiar with threads and know how to offload the interpreter and command handling to another thread. I know sockets are a thing, but I haven't a clew of how to use them to communicate between processes without writing both ends custom.

Security is not an issue, since this is a debug-only feature.

    Thanks!

Is there a virtual environment equivalent for node?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 10:52 AM PDT

I'm coming from Python and PyCharm, where a new project is placed in a new VE and PyCharm kinda handles most of that set up.

I have to do something in node now, and in VS Code. Does anyone have pointers on how to achieve this isolated environment for node?

I'd rather not tackle learning Docker right now. Thanks!
