I have 7 months to be a full stack programmer, help

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 10:01 AM PST

Hello, sorry but I am very excited, because I got hired for my first apprenticeship, yet I am a bit worried.

So I applied today for an apprenticeship, everything went great, then I got a call from them telling me that I got the "job".

And I am very excited about this, but a thing worried me:

In the application I said that I was experience in C, Java, Python.

However they told me that I will need to know PYTHON, HTML+CSS, PHP, JS and more(?).

I have no problem in learning any of these, but I have 7 months to learn the ones listed above; so what I am asking for is just a bit of help on what should I learn first, and how should I plan my learning knowing that I will have to study those languages!

Help would be hugely appreciated :)

Thanks again, and sorry if I rushed a bit while typing this post but I am still excited/worried ahah

Does anyone else get programming concepts but struggle with syntax?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 10:48 AM PST

For example, currently in my C college class we are discussing dynamic memory allocation and linked lists. The concepts and ideas make perfect sense to me but when it comes to trying to write the code or look at example code I feel like a lost puppy. Is this normal?

27 years old, considering a computer science degree, but I suck at math, advice?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 05:18 PM PST

I see a lot of programs requiring calculus and well, I didn't even take pre-calc in high school (now 10 years ago.) I'm not a very math minded person, and it takes me a bit of extra effort to understand something (but once I do understand it it's amazing.)

I haven't gotten any degree yet. I was going for veterinary technology, but after being a tech assistant for awhile I've come to realize the position isn't for me. More physically demanding than I can tolerate due to medical conditions. The salary isn't enough for supporting my family, either. I would be starting from ground zero for a bachelor's degree.

Do I just go for it and hope for the best and find a tutor if needed? Any good resources to help with my math skills?

Can I learn two programming languages at the same time?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 07:41 PM PST

I'm thinking of learning Kotlin next month, but my new semester also starts then and we will be taught C# as a part of our syllabus. This semester we already had C++ and JavaScript and I understood them pretty well. Should I teach myself Kotlin and learn C# in college at the same time?

    Confused between what to learn

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 11:22 PM PST

Ik the title can be misleading but i am so confused, I want to learn reactjs, but for that i need to learn javascript. Now i heard that reactjs is heavily dependent on ES6 and I should know ES6 to understand react better. But now idk where to start from because there is this thing called modern javascript and vanilla js, idk where to start from and which of these is better to learn. Please guide me, i have searched on internet but i get more confused. And if anyone has a good course for beginner please recommend. As of now i know HTML and CSS. Rihht now i found the tutorial of net ninja for modern javascript but idk if it's the right choice for me or not. I feel like what if i start it and i don't understand anything or maybe i need to learn vanilla js before that.

    Help me find motivation please

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 12:29 PM PST

Hi, so last year (2018) I started college as an IT student. Originally I'm a media technician (photos, filming, photoshop, ect.) and I had no clue how to program (C#), I thought I was gonna learn as the times goes on. But that wasn't the case and I failed my first year because of two classes which involve programming. This year I'm redoing my first year and I have no motivation, people have tried to help me, but I get frustrated and cry, literally. So can you give me any advice, because I'm losing hope.

    Thank you

Junior Software Engineer Java Interview in a week!

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 06:22 PM PST

    Hi people,

So I have just applied for an internal position opened in the company I work. I was told the team is using mainly Java with a bit of Javascript and SQL. This is going to be my first interview in the industry.

The point is, I got zero knowledge in Java and I told this to to HR: I am a self learner and I only know CSS, HTML and Javascript.

The manager wants to interview me anyways and I was told that they will test my technical skills and that while the questions will be in Java, they dont expect me to be precise with Java syntax, I will only need to know cycles, conditions and data structures in Java.

The question is I have only a week to prepare. Is it possible to learn these topics in Java in few days with 3-4 hours a day considering I know Javascript? I would appreciate any related advice.

C vs Python for self teaching data structures and algorithms

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 12:59 PM PST

I'm in a statistics-heavy grad program. I've never used C before. A decent amount of R experience, but I'd say I'm most comfortable with my python.

I'd like to learn data structures and algorithms to open my career possibilities. From what I've read, there's plenty of material available to learn about them in python. But I've also heard to really "get" the concepts on the deeper level, C is preferred.

So a few options I see:

    - (A) Learn as much C as I can then jump into DS&A

    - Learn DS&A in python first, then pursue plan (A) above

    - Only learn DS&A in python and postpone C learning until (if) it's professionally necessary.

What is the wisdom of the sub?

Worth finishing a Computer Science degree?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 12:05 AM PST

A few years ago I went back to school for Computer Science, however, due to the time and costs I ended up not completing. Instead, I applied to a local engineering company and recently landed a job as an entry-level Software Engineer at the company. I primarily have been doing Front-End web development for the company.

My company has a program to help employees go to college and would fund a degree in CS if I choose to pursue it. I was looking at the Oregon State Post Bacc CS program (I have a prior Bachelor's degree) as a possible option.

My question is for people in the field, how much is having the degree going to help me moving forward? If I have 2-3 of experience in the field at the point I finish, would the degree make much of a difference? I guess ultimately I am looking for advice to see if this would be worth my time.

How to take the next step in SQL? For example, an restaurant ordering system.

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 02:59 PM PST

Hello, I ask this question because I don't know what to search for. Do you know resources that explain how to apply good SQL knowledge in a useful context?

I am looking for example projects or concepts that help enable me to apply SQL in a "enterprise" context. For example, an ordering system for a restaurant.

what I would do: I would build a html that shows the menu and accepts orders. This requires the possibility for the chef to enter a menu items and prices. Do I need a python script that listens to user inputs and updates the menu table?

Sorry for the ultimate beginner's question.

Trying To Create Own Electronic Dartboard With Camera

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 11:33 PM PST

Recently, I saw a video by a youtube creator who makes a machine that removes tomatoes using a image processing that detects color. It's not of my field, but I thought it'd be interesting to make an electronic dartboard with similar technology. Are there any APIs available that would help me detect shapes and colors?

How to get a more advanced theoretical background?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 03:16 PM PST

I'm a student who likes to code in his free time, I'm self taught. What are some good resources to get better. I'm thinking about stuff like project architectures, data structures, algorithms etc. any hints? I'm going to start studying Computer Science next year anyway, so I'm sure I'll get there eventually, but I want to learn more about general, not language specific topics.

Can I learn C # and quickly learn C ++ later? Those Languages Very Different?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 08:25 AM PST

I'm worried about investing my time in Unity Engine (C#) and regret it, and the same thing happens with Unreal Engine (C ++) for game development, Can I learn one faster by understanding the concepts of the other?

Is there a more elegant solution to this data structure problem?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 06:32 PM PST

I am working on a question for my Data Structures HW and I have found a solution to the problem but it's "hackier" than anything we've been shown/asked to do so far in the class. I am assuming there is a more elegant solution that I am not seeing.

This is from a multi-step problem about solving sudoku-like puzzles, but the part that has me tripped up is this:

Given a vector (which are columns of a mini-sudoku puzzle in this case), apply the linear search function to each integer 1<= k <= 4. If all numbers k are found in the vector return true, otherwise false.

Given linear search function (in javascript):

    function LinearSearch(vector, item){ for(var i = 0; i <=vector.length - 1; i++){ if (vector[i] == item){ return true; } } return false; }

    My answer (javascript):

    function check(puzzle, j){ temp = [0,0,0,0]; var found = 0; ... for(var k = 1; k <= 4; k++){ if(LinearSearch(temp, k)){ found = found + 1; } } if(found == 4){ return true; } else{ return false; } }

So more specifically I am having trouble tracking the results of each linear search. My solution is to create a variable called found and increment it every time the search yields true. Then I know it should be true 4 times if all 4 numbers are present, so I check if found is 4 and then return true, otherwise false. This is the hackiness I'm talking about.

I'm not sure if my brain is just kinda fried from looking at this stuff for so long or if maybe I've initialized the linear search function in a less than ideal way for solving the problem.

    C question about dynamic arrays

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 05:47 PM PST

Say I have a dynamic array called Array and an integer called weight.

    So for instance, int weight = 20; int* Array = malloc(sizeof(int) * weight);

Now, I have a function that takes in Array.

    void PuttingValuesinArray(int* Array);

Now here is where I am confused. For eg, say I want to check how many values are already there in Array. Like Array[0], Array[1], Array[2] could be filled hypothetically. So I would want to put a value in Array[3] in that function. Or Array[0], Array[1]. Then I would put a value in Array[2] in that function. Or Array[0], Array[1], Array[2], Array[3], and Array[4], and I would have to then put a value in Array[5]. However, since I don't know how many places are already initialized, how would I find out?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I have been trying to figure out how to do this for a long time. If someone could help, would really appreciate it.

    Thanks!

How to make a slightly more advanced calculator website?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 09:20 PM PST

Hello! I'm a beginner programmer with some knowledge in web dev and python; I'm also learning node.js right now. I built a very simple calculator-like website and wanted to make it more advanced (like add buttons and some back-end), but I'm stuck on doing the backend part; I made an input text for the numbers/operations and just used the eval() function for the js which pretty much abstracted away everything. Could I somehow use node.js? I'm not trying to look at any calculator tutorials, because I want to try to figure it out. This is my first post, so any guidance would be much appreciated!

MVC pattern and Design patterns in general - how to understand them?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 05:19 PM PST

Hey. I'm currently making a game in college and one of our tasks is to apply the MVC pattern to the codebase so that it adheres to it as well as any other patterns. I have a rough understanding of it and had a look at a few websites but i'm still finding it kinda hard to understand.

Like for example, one of my main classes within my game basically creates the game by loading in all of the assets at certain positions and starting a timer then using a bunch of helper functions defined underneath in the same class and functions from other classes on a timer to determine what to do(give player points, remove life from player, end the game etc)

One of my other classes loads in a start menu using FXML containing buttons which take you to different places, which I assume would be the equivalent of a View as its what the user sees? Controller could be the controller classes that determine what happens upon button press and the Model could be all the other classes that are used but the user doesnt actually see them, e.g Player class, Obstacle class, a class for the World as a whole etc?

For patterns in general, I understand some of them but how do you actually determine where it'd make sense to apply one or where it would be suitable to be used?

    Using "get" as a prefix

    Posted: 05 Dec 2019 08:56 PM PST

Hey, I'm a junior in university studying CS. For a project in software engineering, we have to develop an app. I have a function that gets a user's location and username from Firebase and names it "getUserDetails" (java) but I was wondering if that's bad naming convention? I know the 'get' prefix is used for getters and my function is void... A group mate told me that I shouldn't be using get unless it's a getter, is this correct?
