What is it like to be a researcher in theoretical Computer Science?

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 01:28 PM PDT

Hey! I am a final year undergrad in CS. I am having a difficult time thinking about which area to choose for research in CS. I have research experience in the field of Systems and AI. Research in these fields is more on the experimentation and evaluation side.

I wanted to know how the research in Theoretical CS (like Quantum Computing, Algorithms, etc.) differs from this "applied" sort of research. Do people spend all their day looking at the board thinking how the math would work out in some problem? Please share your experience.

It will be nice to have a list for landmark academic papers in the space of computer science that every person interested in the theory side of things should read.

Can any Sys admins tell me what their job is like? I’m working on a degree in cyber security.

Is it worth learning things like Powershell or Linux scripting? I'm pretty interested in that.
