My game got pirated, but there is an upside

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 01:18 AM PDT

Thursday i saw an increase in traffic of a few thousand than i normally get, so i did a bit of googling.

Traffic was coming from a Chinese pirate site with my game on it. Felt pretty mixed about that at the time, although i personally don't think piracy hurts sales, its also difficult to see your hard work being given away.

Day 2 and the traffic shot up to over 10k page views. Another google shows that people are blogging about my game on a site called Weibo and saying positive things about it.

Normally i sell between 10-15 copies a day on itch, After the piracy, its well over 100 a day, its slowly dropping but not near my usual yet.

This could all be a coincidence, so don't go put your game on a pirate site lol. But it "seems" like, that piracy increases sales.

Guess which dead Marvel character is still alive in my game.

Wrote a tutorial on how to deliver a closed alpha of your game directly to your Discord server via Discord's Store Channel feature and role assignments. Super under-utilized feature that I think would help a lot of people here who want to do a closed alpha but don't want to mess with Steam or Itch.

    Game monetization alternatives. Any suggestions?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 05:11 AM PDT

    Hi fellow gamers & developers,

Some consumers do not like microtransactions and want to have a one time purchase of the full game, because who would want to pay again and again especially if the game is pay to win.

Some developers want to have a continuous earnings to pay off their expenses(servers, salary...etc) that they implemented subscription, microtransactions and ads.

How can we create a good ecosystem for both gamers and devs that they would both benefit?

I know that this would be in case to case basis and is not applied for all game types so I would like to know in consumers' perspective and developers' perspective regarding this concern.

    Thanks :)

Want to start a career path in video game design, parents support me but are skeptical about my ability to stick to it. Are there any challenging courses or competitions that I can take or attend to prove I am serious about pursuing this path?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 11:29 AM PDT

Basically what the title says, I want to pursue game design and parents are on board with my plan. The only problem is that I will need to go to a community college for two years in order to get into a good college for game design, and I have to work very hard if I want to transfer to a better college. Is there any way I can prove to my parents that I can work hard and am dedicated enough to pursue this path, that's specifically related to learning and pursuing game design.

New Source Control Management designed for game development

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 04:43 AM PDT

    Hey!

We are a team doing some market research to study the viability of a new platform/software for Source Control Management, designed specifically for video game development.

We are just getting started with a general draft of the needs, so feel free to contribute anything you might feel it would be good to have :)

We do have some ideas already that we feel would be great, but we don't want to influence your answers by asking you "would you like X, but better?". That said, I will happily talk about some of them in the comments if people are interested, so beware of bias after reading!

If you want to contribute, here is the poll. It will only take you a couple of minutes and it will help us greatly!

And of course, feel free to ask me directly anything you want about it, either here or via PM.

By this subreddit's rules the answers will be public, so refrain from entering any personal information. If you want us to keep you updated on the project, feel free to send me a PM.

Edit: fixed the link, it was wrong!

seeking ideas for a boss fight climax attack

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 07:08 AM PDT

hi guys im putting a 2x sped video of a boss fight in my game. all art is free from the internet except the stuff which is obviously drawn not by an artist. the music was whatever youtube was playing but its also 2x so its basically nothing.

i uploaded the full boss fight although there's no need to bother with it. im looking basically for a cool climactic boss attack when it reaches one hp. you can see what ive got at around 30-35 seconds or something. i didnt really bother finishing it cause i dont like it, so the projectiles don't actually do anything.

seeing as the entire battle is mostly a bullet hell type thing i was thinking yeah maybe something that ups the bullet hell aspect. but in general the projectiles chase the player so i thought maybe some kind of fixed direction attack. or on the other hand stop the bullet hell and have a large object that the player needs to avoid - idk a series of falling blocks or idk like a giant swooping laser or something.

but i just cant really think of something really cool, so im reaching out to you guys! please let me know if you have any ideas.

i want the fight to end with the player just slamming that red thing on the skulls head for like 3 seconds. and that red thing should come when the skulls hp is zero, so whatever the climax is, the player beats it and then gets up to that red thing and just wails on it.

the player as of this fight can roll, attack and double jump.

on the side if you have any general feedback id much appreciate that as well, but when ive got the full boss fight ill post it to the weekly feedback thread.

    thanks in advance!

Is 2020 a bad year to release an indie title?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 10:47 AM PDT

A lot of hard hitting AAA games are coming out in the first two quarters of next year and I'm wondering how this will impact the success of indie games to get a good morsel of attention? Are there any analytics on how well indie games have done next to releases of huge AAA titles?

Forgive my ignorance, I'm just a little concerned because I'm in the process of developing an open world RPG albeit at a much smaller, indie scale with a minuscule budget on advertising and wonder if I should hold off its launch date for another year and work on my smaller mobile projects. Also I'm reminded of the Titanfall 2 launch fiasco which has me putting on my tinfoil hat.

What is it called when you have abilities that are only available in certain states?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 10:46 AM PDT

For example if I wanted the face buttons on a controller to do something completely different depending on if its pressed while aiming or while crouched. Is there a name for the system where that's done?

    Abbreviation for real gun names

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 10:42 AM PDT

So I have a question regarding weapon names and I thought I might try asking here if anyone knows.

I already know that gun names that are still in use are trademarked and copyrighted such as Colt or Glock. I have read that abbreviation however can be used such as M4 or AK-47 as it could stand for something else. Now I am asking if I can do the same for Colt like this: C.O.L.T or G.L.O.C.K . I am guessing it's you know too obvious and like there is no law for this specifically but I could get sued or it could be an issue.

Thank you all for any response in advance!

Need recommendation on a visual based behavior tree asset for Unity

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 06:47 AM PDT

My goal is to make use of behavior tree to implement NPCs which are able to survive on their own by performing certain tasks such as sleeping, eating and shopping. For example, if an NPC is hungry, he will go home to eat but if there is no food, he will go to a shop first.

Are there any good visual editors for behavior tree available for unity out there which I can make use of? (I would prefer a free option but willing to pay a small amount too if it's worth).

Why are fighting games one of the hardest genres to create?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 09:00 AM PDT

Movement mechanics aren't hard to create and I've created attacking and blocking vs AI characters in games. It seems like overall it wouldn't be that bad, right? But every site I go to, every design channel I watch tells me the same thing - don't make a fighting game without sufficient commitment/knowledge because it is one of the hardest if not the hardest type of game to make. Why?

What are all the aspects (or as many as you can) of a fighting game which makes it annoyingly hard to create?

    Help with understanding revenue split.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 07:18 AM PDT

So, Im a game dev on the making (yay!), and I even managed to gather a buddy to work in the game with me; its a simple one but still, feels big.

However we question something: How revenue share works? it's an automated process?

Let's say I put this game on Steam at the price of 5 dollars; Steam takes their part, but then how the money will split between the devs of the game? I would need to personally pay them monthly? it's an automated process?
