I did it Reddit - I am now a full time Developer! Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:22 AM PDT This is just another little success story that I have the privilege to write up after leaning on so many stories just like this throughout the past 3 years. In January, 2016, I decided to put my head down and learn JavaScript. I had some basic knowledge of HTML/CSS and could make a simple page - but the logic was obviously lacking. JS scared me. After my wife became pregnant, the fact that my job as a Cinema Tech wasn't going to go anywhere became more and more of a reality. So I learned JavaScript, I learned SASS. And I built stuff - A LOT of stuff. Stuff that was useless, some stuff was fun. I took Udemy courses, stalked Wes Bos and Scott Tolynski on Twitter to grab their latest courses, listened to podcasts and asked a LOT of questions on Reddit. I made websites for friends and family. I made an Electron app with Vuejs and Net-SNMP. I built stuff for my company that they are actually using and excited about! I'm not going to lie, it was exhausting. I'd be putting 50-60 hours a week towards my actual job and then 30-40 towards code. But I did it! I start in a few weeks as a Jr. QA Engineer, working mostly remote and I am so excited. I can't imagine how much easier it will be to learn this stuff once it is my only job. PS - I just turned 32 and have a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Arts lol. Sorry this is so broken up in random thoughts, I'm just so excited and trying to get his out there for the next guy like me who wants to change career paths mid life. You can do it! Is the role of the Frontend Developer still going to be around in 5 to 10 years? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 05:37 AM PDT I've been a Frontend developer for about 6 years now after making a somewhat fluid transition from the design world. When I first made the transition, my role was HTML/CSS developer at my company. Obviously, a lot has changed since then, with a much heavier reliance and emphasis on JavaScript frameworks for building the frontend. Browser support has gotten better, older IE versions have been deprecated, and creating layout with Flexbox is much easier and intuitive than the older float/clear and inline-block methods. What I'm getting to is that, my specialty was making websites look good, responsively and cross-browser, but from the inside looking out, seems like that doesn't require that much of a expertise anymore. My company has recently started to do away with the Fullstack/Backend/Frontend titles. Now we are all just engineers, with a particular focus on one part of the stack. I've tried playing around with backend code, but I just don't find it fun and interesting, but unfortunately, it feels like I need to become a programmer and get a degree in computer science if I don't want to be phased out within a decade. Any one else who has been in the industry for awhile feel this way? [link] [comments]
Webdevs, do you have a website ? Why (not) ? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 11:15 AM PDT Do you have a portfolio, a blog, a contact page or anything related to your webdev activity ? Why or why not ? [link] [comments]
Switch from Full Stack to Front-End? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 04:00 AM PDT I'm currently full stack but with the constantly evolving frameworks I'm starting to get a bit lost. I also find that once backends become more complex I start to lose my way. Has anyone moved from Full-Stack to purely Front-End? How did it go? [link] [comments]

Posted: 25 Aug 2019 10:46 AM PDT Hey guys, So tomorrow is the day.. I will have my first ever coding interview tomorrow. At this point I am making an apprenticeship and I'll finish next year in June, it's like an apprenticeship for system administration. Almost all my knowledge is self taught and I am kind of worried that I won't know anything they are asking me. They asked me to present them a project I recently done and I will present a small project, which I am proud of. I like the code quality and anything else but I don't know, if that's enough.. So yeah, my first interview and a lot of worries. [link] [comments]
For those who are bad with making user interfaces and CSS, how do you handle them ? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 10:55 AM PDT I am a sole dev in a never ending struggle with making layouts, CSS, and mobile friendly websites. I do manage it, but its not pretty, takes a long time coding and probably is bad from a UX point of view. Any people who are or were in a similar boat ? How do or did you handle it ? Edit: Have using any PHP frameworks / CMS helped ? Any front end tools ? Pinegrow helped me a lil. [link] [comments]

What is the best way to build a "slideshow" website? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:21 AM PDT There is a possibility that I might be developing a new website, which will be like slideshow. The kind where the client wants the pages to slide from left to right or top to bottom. A presentational site, if I say so. They would also like some kind of an admin panel. So far my professional work has been all WordPress with very few small websites with React + Redux. I am curious is it easy to achieve slide transitions with React and also about the admin panel. The need for a Twitter following? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 07:45 AM PDT Other than Reddit, which I goof around on anonymously, I don't have any social media accounts. I feel happier and healthier without them. That said, I know how important having a Twitter following can be as a developer. Especially if you lose your job or launch a product. Does anyone have advice for not being invisible, but also not forcing yourself to be on Twitter? [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Aug 2019 03:07 PM PDT Hey guys, I'm currently going through the Odin Project as I want to do a career switch from teacher to web developper. I plan to do freelancing jobs. TOP is great and it offers to curriculum : Rails full stack and Javascript fullstack. Both of these teaches css html and javascript the same, but the first one teaches you ruby and RoR for the backend, while the other one focus on nodejs. I'm not sure which one to pick, i've read online a lot of different opinions about RoR being dead or not, but don't even know if they apply for a freelance developper anyway. So, which one would you advise me to do and why ? Node, RoR, or both ? Thanks for the hindsight ! [link] [comments]

How shoudl I go about indexing a large amount of movies efficiently? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:44 PM PDT So I'm working on a web project which involves a database filled with a large (thousands!) amount of movies, categorized based on genre, plot points, diversity, gore/violence, all sorts of categories. I started making an excel spreadsheet with all the categories I want and a Y/N answer for each category, but I realized that will take waaaay too long and I have too many movies to index. I started looking into MySQL but I don't know if that would be very efficient. I was wondering, what would be the fastest way to do this? Is there some sort of crowd-based public database available, where other people on the internet would be able to help me categorize movies? Or is there some way I could make my list more efficient instead of watching/reading the IMDB for each individual movie and categorizing them? Thanks so much! [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Aug 2019 06:31 AM PDT I'm currently thinking of starting to create courses related to web dev, but there's one thing I'm still not sure about; do people prefer video or text courses when it comes to web dev courses? In my case I definitely prefer text courses, since I find it easier to follow code, I like it being able to "just search for a specific thing with ctrl + f" and I don't need to rewind in case I didn't get something - but I don't know, maybe that's just me. Seeing how popular platforms like Udemy etc. have become (where video is the primary source of a course) I might just be old fashioned and producing video content is the right way to go. So I'd really like to hear some opinions on that topic :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Aug 2019 01:39 PM PDT Hey, I'm looking to make a simple WordPress website. I am based in Canada and was thinking of using shared hosting. Fastcomet looks good, but it's server is on the east and I'm on the west. Anyone have any recommendations for Canadian server shared hosting? Thanks [link] [comments]
Quick Question - Website Analytics Implementation Posted: 25 Aug 2019 07:41 AM PDT Introduction Question Is it illegal to use any of the Google Analytics scripts without explicit website visitor consent? Definitions
Question Background I am currently hosting a simple, static site on GitHub pages (i.e. practically zero back-end config access) and my goal is to setup some relatively basic web analytics functionality. Primarily, I would like to know how many visitors the site gets every day and I would like to do so without having to disturb the visitor's experience flow with some cookie/privacy consent pop-up. From there it would be nice to get secondary information about site visitors, such as their general location (country, state, city), IP address, device used, browser, etc. However, I prioritize more highly to be able to offer visitors an experience without having to interact with the cumbersome cookie consent/privacy over the secondary information of interest. I have noticed that there are other developers who use GitHub pages and include the Google Analytics scripts in their sites but without any pop-ups or anything that might clearly request consent from the visitor. So I am wondering if this is an act of negligence on their part or if using the Google Analytics (gtag.js) script is actually perfectly legal and I can too assimilate it in my site without the need for explicit consent from my site visitors. Posted: 25 Aug 2019 01:34 PM PDT I am curious to know which vendor prefixes you guys still use for your CSS. I have not had the need to use any but then again my site is ugly on IE. Anyone want to share? [link] [comments]
Open source / minimal widget for email+donation to see download link? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:24 AM PDT Hello webdevs, What is the smallest, simplest way to implement a web interface that asks for email address and a donation (possibly zero) and in return offers a link to a download? I am building a free educational (non-web) app and I am working to find testers and build a community around it. I hate bloated things, so no wordpress, mysql. Ideally I want a file on my server with a list of the email addresses who have donated, and that's it (JSON file if possible, or csv or whatever). Open to suggestions. Ideally I would like an open source tool for that, so I can tweak it to my liking. Not sure they exist and I realize some part of it will have to be closed, to operate with PayPal or other closed payment platforms. I looked into stripe, PayPal and donor box and didn't find anything that clicked immediately. I'm ok with html css and a bit of js, but overall clueless! All suggestions welcome. Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:02 AM PDT I got my foot in the door as a fullstack contractor at a SaaS agency, and started at 30/hr. A month later they upped me to 40/hr, which I didn't expect, but was a nice surprise. Unfortunately since then, I have quite frankly been worked like a dog as 'the rapid protoype' guy while it seems the rest of my dev team has a more relaxed schedule. I have this nudging suspicion that I am the lowest paid contractor on the team by a large margin, and the vp and my pm are using my low rates to build their prototypes on a budget. Should I ask for a raise? Should I leave the contract? I'm still pretty new to this, and overall I really like the people and the team, but I'm getting pretty burned out. I'd hate to sound ungrateful for the work, but at some point not working weekends to meet these two week sprint deadlines every two weeks would be a nice plus. [link] [comments]

How to handle a form in JQuery and redirect to another page based on a conditional? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 11:20 AM PDT Okay so I realized I don't know how to code in normal JavaScript or JQuery. I have a series of inputs (email, size) and a couple radio buttons. How do I get this information after I submit then parse it and make a check to see which page the user should be thrown to next? I've only been using React pretty much this whole time... [link] [comments]
