Another free "learn-2-web-dev" course, but better than many...

In no way affiliated with it. Just randomly came across. It's a guy's entire college course that he's clearly been working on refining and has a progression of articles, vids, quizzes, examples, tools, and links to other references. Seems pretty well planned and puts learning JS after HTML/CSS/Git. Just thought it to be worth the sharing with those of you who ask "how do I start".

Learning HTML/CSS and JavaScript all at once, how to keep track of it all?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 03:21 PM PDT

Hello, I just took a Udemy course on HTML and CSS, made a few awesome projects. Got a lot more comfortable with both of those "languages." I am now taking a JavaScript class and once finished will take a full blown frontend course that includes all three.

The issue I am running into is I KNOW every moment I am not using HTML and CSS I am not retaining what I learned just a short few weeks ago. I also want to start diving deeper into CSS and HTML since I love both of them so much. What should I do? I know the easy answer is "make more projects" and I will, its just I wanted to build this HTML CSS JS foundation before I started building out projects for myself. I want something to show for my hard work and building out a portfolio website is my goal with 3-5 projects on that website.

I am contemplating reading documentation and building out a cheat-sheet for myself in excel for no reason other than learning as I type and maybe referencing in the future. Any suggestions would help, thank you!

Looking for book recommendations for web app/site development and planning as a freelancer

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 01:49 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I'm a full stack developer and I am working through a cool architecture book that talks a lot about taking user requirements, talking to SMEs, etc. and turning that information into a solid architecture design.

As I am reading it, I realize I have a huge interest in this, but several knowledge gaps.

What I am looking for are resources to learn about the whole process of looking at a problem or talking (interviewing) someone and going from interviews to things like user stories (or something similar), creating wireframes/mockups, following a development methodology like kanban or sticky notes on a whiteboard, and eventually a planned architecture and then implementing the solution!

I'm sure that there is not one all encompassing book/course, but I would like any recommendations you have for filling in these knowledge gaps. Like I said, I'm looking at tackling this from a freelance route, then learning more about how it happens in a corporate environment (I have some exposure to that with my current job, but I never get to do things like talk to customers, etc.)

Also any tool suggestions that you could see being useful for such an endeavor would be great.

For example, here are a few books I was looking at picking up:

I have reached a weird stage in my learning to become a web developer journey. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 11:14 AM PDT

I am pretty familiar with HTML and CSS. I can make responsive websites from scratch without Bootstrap or jQuery. I would like to think I am pretty familiar with JS as well. I have reached a stage in JS where I am usually able to understand what the other person wants to do with their code. Code alongs are easy. I am easily able to solve 8 kyu's and at times 7 kyu's on code wars, though I doubt solving questions on sites like code wars is a true test of your programming capabilities. I have reached a stage where JS makes sense to me and I am beginning to really enjoy it. I have worked on a few projects using vanilla JS as well.

When I code along somebody who is working on a complex app using vanilla JS, I am usually able to understand the logic behind the code HOWEVER it is difficult for me to connect working on different parts of the said app. Like I cannot comprehend how I would go about creating an app from scratch. Sure I can borrow somebody's idea and build upon it, but I cannot begin to build an app from scratch. I wouldn't know where to start at.

I have reached that weird intermediate stage where I understand the logic behind the code but can only build upon somebody else's idea. How do I go about improving that?

Also, do you think it is the right time to dive into React?

I am familiar with Sass. BEM. Know my way around NPM and scripts. Have stayed away from Bootstrap and jQuery though. Familiar with Git and GitHub. Do you think I am ready for a junior dev position?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Should I start with Codecademy or something else?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 03:25 PM PDT

I'm looking to get into web designing as a side skill/hobby (I'm a student) to create a nice personal website (I own the domain for a year and would host it on github) but currently only know basic html. Should I start out my learning with Codecademy (currently trying "Introduction to HTML") or another course online? Any recommendations would be appreciated, especially if it looks good on a CV/LinkedIn.

I love the way some of the websites featured here look and feel so that's the end goal but I understand it takes a while to get good and learn.

    Thanks!

When working with flexbox and flex items, width and flex-basis are essentially the same?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 02:44 PM PDT

Or is this comparison not good to use? I understand flexbox pretty well and have been using it for a few months, but one thing that always confused me was the flex property - more specifically, flex-basis. So, can flex-basis essentially be thought of as width? From my research, it seems they both do the same exact thing as well when dealing with them in this context. Now, how does flex-grow and flex-shrink work in relation to flex-basis. I've been using these properties, but I wanna understand how they are working under the hood better, because sometimes I get the desired effects without actually knowing why.

    Salaries in Chicago?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 02:11 PM PDT

    Hey there,

I'm thinking about a move to Chicago in August of 2020. Curious if anyone has an idea of what the salary for a web developer is there?

I'm currently an intern, but am already signed on to start at my current place of employment as a junior developer when I graduate in December. By the time of my move I'll have been full time for ~8 months.

I'm already proficient in Angular, AWS (cloudformation, codepipeline, etc.), unit and e2e testing (Jest and Protractor, w/ use of Docker). I'm also familiar with .NET Core but only with light use in personal projects, not professionally.

Trying to get an idea of what type of income I might be able to get, and also what skills might be better in the area that I could begin to learn?

    Thanks!

Should I be building a social media presence?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 02:09 PM PDT

I've just now began my first semester as a Web Publishing student and I have no social media presence whatsoever beyond LinkedIn. I do not use Facebook, Twitter or Instagram nor do I have a Pinterest or dribbble and I'm just worried that perhaps I should have some kind of existence on these platforms. I know how to use them as I've had accounts in the past but quite frankly just don't much like them.

Bonus: If I should exist on these sites, what type of content should I be posting? Should I be utilizing my own name to increase my presence or use a pseudonym? I'm pretty introverted and tend to mostly keep to myself and family+friends.

Looking for a jQuery solution to stealthily load gifs in the background

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 01:09 PM PDT

I have several GIFs on my page but don't want the page to load slowly, so I'm first rendering PNG versions of the GIFs, and then dynamically loading the GIF in the background.

    Like this:

    • HTML loads several PNG images (2 MB).
    • Once everything has loaded, a GIF version of each image loads in the background (20 MB)
    • Once each GIF has loaded, the PNG image is replaced with the GIF.

I have this mostly working. Here it is live: https://kristianwindsor.com/blog/fullspeed.io-premium-car-videography/

And here is the code, where png=.isgif and gif=.gifisgif:

    $(window).on('load', function () { $('img.isgif').each(function(i, obj) { var oldSrc = $(obj).attr('src'); var newSrc = oldSrc.split('.')[0] + '.gif'; $('body').append('<img src="'+newSrc+'" class="gifisgif" />'); }); $('img.gifisgif').on('load', function() { var newSrc = $(this).attr('src'); $(this).remove(); var oldSrc = newSrc.split('.')[0]; var imgEl = $('body').find('[src^='+oldSrc+']'); $(imgEl).removeClass('isgif'); $(imgEl).attr('src', newSrc); }); });

However, on mobile Safari, it loads everything at once and takes forever. I'm looking for a solution that makes the page load quickly on all devices. Here's what I was thinking:

    • Wait 2 seconds before loading the GIFs
    • Load each GIF only once it's in the viewport
    • Load only one GIF at a time
    • Load upon other user-action

I think loading only once in the viewport makes the most sense, but what are your thoughts on this?

What's the best place to host files (document, images, spreadsheet, etc) for my web app?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2019 06:47 AM PDT

I'm currently using PHP for the backend and stored all the user uploaded files in the same server. However, I feel that the solution is a little bit messy. I'm thinking of moving the file storing to 3rd party file storage. Probably something with easy to use API. I'm currently looking at Amazon S3 since I'm familiar with it in past projects. However, is there any other good alternative?
