I'm aware of how the proof goes, I'd just like to know the original reference if possible.

Discussion: The future of Operating Systems research & practice

    Posted: 16 Jul 2019 10:57 PM PDT

It is well known that the architecture that GNU/Linux is built on is robust but old and especially POSIX feels outdated. also, some new operating systems (fuchsia, redox, haiku) are slowly emerging. there are few old but interesting OSes as well ( eg: Plan9, hurd ).

Now, what new inventions / breakthroughs / gradual upgrades do you expect in OS space? ( server / desktop / embedded etc.. ).. What features / techniques from existing research is interesting in this regard? I would like to hear a bit more about OS research....

Preparation for a Computer Science Degree

    Posted: 16 Jul 2019 02:54 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I just graduated HS and I'm going to study Computer science at a local university.

Summer just started for me and I have a question - are there any particular things that I should do or learn before my freshman year of college starts?

My main language is going to be C++. I already know some HTML and CSS, but still very new to programming.

    Thanks in advance!

    Enumerating unlabeled necklaces

I'm no computer scientist, but I like playing with combinatorics in my free time. This seems to me to be an open (but very niche) problem and my algorithm seems numerically CAT and I can proof that it had better bounds than existing solutions. Although I might just have overlooked something

It's a minor thing, but is it worth throwing something on arxiv? Do any of you have some tips for what to do with a little hobby project like this (if anything)?

    Assembly IDE

    Posted: 16 Jul 2019 07:30 PM PDT

Do you all have any recommendations on an assembly IDE? I am learning assembly and just wanted something that will make it easier to view the stack and register values. I have tinkered with SASM and it seems good, but I was curious if theres anything else you think may be better? The big thing is being able to see the stack for visual aid.

Best programming language unit to take for data science?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2019 08:15 AM PDT

For some context I'm in uni doing data science and I have to take 3 programming units. An Intro python one, an intro C one and the last I get to choose. My two options are "internet and java programming" or "object oriented programming with c++" (more advanced than the c one) which one will be better?
