    Addressing Recent Downvoting Habits

    Posted: 10 Jul 2019 08:04 PM PDT

    Hi /r/webdev,

If you think something contributes to conversation, upvote it. If you think it does not contribute to the subreddit it is posted in or is off-topic in a particular community, downvote it.

We want this community to be dedicated to professional discussion regarding all things web development. We take pride in encouraging thoughtful discussion and encourage dissenting opinions so long as those discussions are centered around the topic and do not turn into personal attacks.

An unhealthy habit seems to have cropped up where topical discussions are immediately being downvoted. This stifles discussion as it removes it from reddit's algorithms as the topic is deemed not to be hot. Please consider adjusting your downvoting habits to conform to reddiquette.

    Web development and ADHD

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 10:08 AM PDT

This might be a usual topic for this reddid but I'm a web developer and I have ADHD, sometimes, when I enjoy what I do and I learn something new I can get in the "zone" and I feel awesome, when I do something repetitive or that I don't enjoy, I start comiting stupid mistakes, loose any focus and feel like the worse dev out there.

I have some cooping tecnics, which might be pretty common amongst the comunity, like listen to white noise (can't listen to podcasts or music) to tune down anything else or try to automate as much as I can, but I surprise myself, after 2h of tweaking visual studio code not haven't done a thing of what I'm supposed to do.

I'm curious if there are other developer with adhd out there and if they have anything that works for they.

    Thanks!

Why do I not hear much about the ASP.NET framework?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 07:14 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I was doing some general research and I came across ASP.NET. As a new web dev, I've heard of the .NET framework, but never in the context of web applications. I even did some digging on this sub, and past users voiced that it's widely used at many companies, specifically for internal applications.

Why do I hear much more about React, Angular, Vue, and others alike, and not much about the ASP.NET framework?

What do you tell clients who're thinking of going with Wix/Squarespace ?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 06:25 AM PDT

Hope my question doesn't infringe on Rule 1...

Most of my client opportunities are artists, so they tend to gravitate towards platforms like Wix and SS. My usual attitude is to tell them to go for it if they have very basic needs, but try to discourage them as soon as I sense they want something more custom. Truth be told, I've never tried those platforms (I intend to do their free trials as soon as I have time) so I don't feel 100% confident in my answers.

What's your response to clients who ask you why they should use your services instead of just opening a W/SS account for themselves ? How do you evaluate whether these platforms are a good solution for them ?

    Thanks !

LPT for jobseekers applying to front end positions

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 10:16 AM PDT

After a string of bad hires (not bad people, just bad fits skill-wise) I was asked to help the HR lady at my company pick people to interview. I thought her job was easy but no, it took me hours to get through everyone and leave feedback.

Please, for the love of all that is holy provide easily viewable portfolio examples of front end work.

2 people (2!) had a portfolio with several good examples of their projects. Most had 1 or 2 very basic examples and then a handful of github repo links with no way to view the final product without pulling it down and running it which was a pain in the ass because I wasnt on my work laptop and had nothing installed. To be completely honest I ran a few projects and then said fuck it, I dont have time for this. There is NO way the HR lady is ever gonna bother with that either. I ended up basing my opinions on the projects I was able to easily view.

This was the first time ive really been on the other side of the hiring process so felt the need to share my experience.

2 Very Different Job Offers, Seeking Opinions

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 02:54 PM PDT

I have two very good, but very different job offers. This will be my second year as a dev, FYI.

The first is with a smaller company, maybe 50 - 100 people in total. I'd be using tech that I'm very interested in learning (React, Node, Blockchain, C#, etc), I'd be directly mentored and working with the lead UI developer who is a great guy, and the mission of the company is a good bonus (saving marine life/fish farming best practices). I'd be building out UIs and using lots of data to make some pretty cool stuff (at least that's what it sounds like).

The second company is much larger, around 800 - 1000 people. I'd be using Drupal 7 and helping the team migrate to Drupal 8. I'd pretty much be working as part of the marketing team helping them with the website. The pay is better and it's much closer to where I currently live. Huge HQ with cafeteria and gym and lots of other cool perks. Every one at the company seems great and I feel I would learn some good ancillary skills, though not necessarily programming related.

I'm a bit torn. On the one hand, the first company pretty much checks off everything I am looking for in the next phase of my career. But this other company sounds really great even though I'm not crazy about the tech I'd be using or working on marketing stuff. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any thoughts/opinions on what might be a good judgement call here is much appreciated.

How do I look for an agent as a freelancer?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 04:01 PM PDT

Hey guys. My friend and I have been making websites over the past couple of years and we have reached some level of success in making our own projects. We decided a while ago that even though working on something that you have created, own, and are passionate about is fun, it does not pay the bills. Thus, we have been getting into freelancing over the past couple of months. The trouble is, neither of us have the proper networking or business skills to handle the client acquisition part of freelancing, as we are both people who love to code and would rather focus on that. We have been able to get some orders here and there, but we think having a dedicated "agent" would speed up the process of acquiring clients quite a bit, and would also contribute to building a more professional image of ourselves.

To be fully honest, I have no idea where to start looking. Does anybody have any experience in this type of thing? What type of experience should I look for in a potential hire? Is there any job title for this specific type of work? Is paying a set percentage of each order enough, or would a salary model of compensation work better?

I know its a lot of questions, but if anybody with experience in this type of thing would be able to offer their advice, it would help a lot, and I think other freelancers on here would be interested in having a discussion about this idea too.

    Mixed content with embedded gists

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 03:54 PM PDT

I recently wrote a site in Markdown using Hugo and deployed it via Netlify. I have some gists uploaded on Github and wanted to avoid having multiple copies of a single file (fear of bad versioning) so I tried to embed the gist directly into my site's blog posts in Markdown (I run the javascript in my markdown file). I received a notice from Netlify telling me I have mixed content: some via http and others via https.

    • Does this lead to some browsers or security settings giving warnings to users? I've had https so far with no issues.
    • Is there any way to embed a gist (or recommended alternative) without having this issue?

I am embedding it via this: https://github.com/olOwOlo/hugo-theme-even/issues/61

New Project Manager could use some Dev advice

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 03:50 PM PDT

I just got hired by a web/app development company as a project manager. It's the first time I'm in this line of work after years of trying to break into web development (not a lot of opportunity in this where I'm located)

I know some minor stuff about web development and graphic design but am absolutely clueless about the coding portion.

Our developers are remote so good communication is critical for success.

Plain and simple, I want to learn more about web development to not only be a better project manager and understand what my team is doing, but also eventually jump in and do some development and coding myself.

Depending on how competent I am, I'd even want to do it freelance on the side for extra money.

I'm torn between taking classes towards a certificate at a community college or just finding courses on Udemy and teaching myself that way.

I fear the CC route would be outdated by the time I finish (or even learn outdated stuff from the start) but don't have any idea where to start if I go the Udemy route.

Anyone have any tips from a web developer perspective what would be best so a manager can understand your frustrations and lend a hand when needed?

    Setting an hourly charge?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 03:21 PM PDT

I've been working freelance on the side for a while and at first I simply used the minimum wage as a starting point and I increased it after a couple of years by £5 but in all honesty, I have no freakin clue.

How do people determine their hourly charge when working freelance?

how long would it take to create these websites?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 02:05 PM PDT

    https://www.tannerjfox.com/home29518262 (without video embedding)

https://jumpcut.com/ (without the login, and assuming courses are hosted on teachable)

for a skilled developer who is going to make it his primary focus, how long would each of these websites take to create? also is wordpress best for this type of work or core php or something else?

    thanks in advance

Need help with someone who knows about XAMPP / localhost development

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 01:56 PM PDT

First off, I'm no web developer so you'll need to speak in layman's terms. I was designing a wordpress website locally using XAMPP.

Long story short - my computer crashed and restarted, now when I load XAMPP and Apache, and visit https://localhost I land on an "index of /" page rather than my website. My computer has restarted before but I used to get an "no object found" error and always managed to eventually get it working but this time I'm afraid my stupid computer might've erased some important files?

I've googled for days trying to find an answer but can't find anything.

If anyone thinks they know what's going on, please DM me. I really don't want to lose weeks of work!

Converting an Excel Calculator into an Online Resource?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 09:45 AM PDT

Hi, so I'm a real beginner when it comes to web development and coding. I have a fairly basic understanding of HTML and Javascript, but by trade I'm more of a Historian (with an interest in IT and stuff).

So anyway, over the past couple of months I've been working on a "Calculator" (of sorts) for dating old medieval documents. Working through Microsoft Excel, I've managed to get all formulas setup and the calculator functioning correctly, but have come to a stumbling block, now that I'm trying to get it online.

I thought I'd initially distribute it through google sheets; but the file proved too large. I think it might be better to convert the Excel file into an SQL database or a Javascript code or something as the caluclation takes a little while to run anyway...

I was wondering if there's any limitations or how challenging it might be to try and convert this stuff from Excel into an online compatible calculator (Like do Index Matchs work)?

Best web hosting service for video library?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 08:54 AM PDT

    Hi there!

I'm looking to create a website, but I don't know exactly how best to go about doing it. This website will be for online tutoring and will consist of mainly interactive videos. I plan on having potentially hundreds if not thousands of videos on this site, and I'd need a capacity to have content locked for premium clients, sending feedback by email, dealing with payments etc.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a company I should consider using?

A Person Thinks They Need A Website Built: What Do You Want Them To Do/Know Before Approaching You?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2019 06:59 PM PDT

It's me, I'm the person who thinks they need a website built.

I am interested in knowing how I can make sure I'm an informed, prepared, and (as much is possible) ideal client for any web developer that might take my project on.

I imagine you've all had experience with someone who wanted a website built, but it was clear they had no idea what it entailed on their end. I'm probably that person, and I'd like to know what it is you'd like me to consider before engaging you.

I know this is a very common question but how I choose the right colors from Coolors.co?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2019 12:05 PM PDT

So I was playing with backend a little bit and I found kinda a bit good with it but then noticed that my frontend skills are very lacking especially the colors, I was searching some ways to choose the right colors. I got that the harmony color rule is 60-30-10 where 60% is the main color, 30% is the secondary color and 10% is the accent color. I use Coolors.co for generating color schemes.

The problem is that I have no idea how to choose this thing. How I choose the main color, secondary color and accent color from it? All I get is that it generates 5 completely different colors but I don't get how to actually use it.

    Any tips?
