Is it just me or are font sizes decreasing lately? Posted: 08 May 2019 01:15 PM PDT I have poor eyesight, and I'm somewhat miffed that developers seem to be ignoring people like me. On many of my mobile apps the font size is less than a pixel wide. There are also no ways of increasing the font size if the app doesn't support the ability. Websites too I constantly have to zoom in at 125% plus just to be able to read the text. I get that the higher resolutions look better. But what's the point if you're not considering people who don't have better than 20/20 vision? [link] [comments]

Posted: 08 May 2019 01:38 PM PDT I want to spice up my portfolio with some new projects to show knowledge of things like react css node and of course javascript. I recently started a new project but I think I underestimated how long the project would take to complete. I'm trying to apply to jobs as an entry level so I'd like projects that are fairly quick to do but would also test my knowledge. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]

Posted: 08 May 2019 01:38 PM PDT My shop uses mainly WooCommerce as an eCommerce platform. I've considered switching to Magento but haven't heard anything positive about it. Another contender that I've considered is Sylius, it looks like a promising option but may be slightly immature as a technology. All of these are PHP based, but I'm open to working on most stacks. What do you guys think? Is there an eCommerce platform that doesn't suck to work with? [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 May 2019 01:06 PM PDT First real dev job I've had to produce a real product for real users who pay for it. I'm on the other side of some seriously dark times and it's so weird how the sun shines brighter, food tastes better, smiles are genuine. Planning ahead to do something fun no longer seems pointless. I'm grateful to have a boss who is patient and helpful and friends who are senior devs with valuable knowledge, advice, and encouragement. [link] [comments]

Can someone answer some WordPress questions to me please? Posted: 08 May 2019 02:35 PM PDT Recently I graduated university and since then I've been polishing my web development skills by working on several project of mine. I mostly use HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Vue.js, PHP, Laravel and MySQL for these projects and I usually build every project from scratch in order to actually get a good grasp of what I'm doing. I create my front-end views and functionality, I create the back-end APIs, I create my databases, etc. For this reason alone I've been avoiding WordPress like the plague, however, lately I've been thinking about trying to pick it up for the sake of my employability, seeing as a lot of jobs require it or at least prefer some knowledge in it. I can't help but think that one day when I go to an interview, they might ask me why haven't I used WordPress so far and I wouldn't be able to give a reasonable explanation. So yesterday I decided to try it out. I downloaded it, hosted it and started fiddling with it, however, I quickly realized how confusing it is. There are loads of files with thousands lines of code, mixed HTML and PHP, no MVC which leaves me flabbergasted. I believe this is the reason I picked up Laravel back in the day in the first place. Also I don't know what effects could changing a single file have on the whole system. Imagine that you're tasked with changing the design. Does that mean you have to rewrite the CSS for the whole website (I assume this would be a huge task) or do you just have to install a different theme? Also can you somehow use the MVC design pattern with WordPress so writing code could be cleaner? And at the end of the day, will not knowing WordPress have negative effect on my employability? I know for sure that I would never use WordPress for any personal projects so I'd only be learning it for the job. [link] [comments]

At what point do you consider yourself a senior? (Asp, .net, c#, sql, Xamarin) Posted: 08 May 2019 04:06 PM PDT So we all know "titles" mean different things to different companies. I've been working for 6 years in this stack, thinking I've got a good grasp. I have a senior title but I'm always intimated by outside developers (consultants, third partner contractors etc). They seem so much smarter, can regurgitate lingo like nothing.. while for me I'll stumble on vocabulary (I describe things and situations and use examples instead of using words like polymorphism etc). Today, I had 3 hour technical interviews for a senior position. Easy questions, easy white board problems, but I still bombed it. Too nervous? Couldn't think straight? Using "like this, like that" too much because no vocabulary? I feel like an ant surrounded by super smart engineers. At what point am I ever going to feel like I'm not the ant in this field of work?? Never. That's right. I'm too dumb 🥵. To all the super smart engineers, I'm super jealous and wish I was like you. Ok, going to go into the corner and cry now 👋 PS - I'm sorta mad the company I stayed with for 6 years became so stagnant with fake titles and not preparing me for the real world 🥵 [link] [comments]
Question about creating a responsive website Posted: 08 May 2019 08:30 AM PDT Hello - I'm new to creating sites, and I've got my code ready. Now, all I want to do, is make it responsive with css media queries. What's the best tutorial on what to add to my code? cheers! ps: I'm doing this to learn, I don't want to upload my website [link] [comments]

Some people with no experience are looking for a teacher, what should i do? Posted: 08 May 2019 03:50 PM PDT I found an ad on craigslist and 4 people want someone to teach them html, css, front, back and db. They're looking to learn all this in 3 months. With people with no experience I'm not sure if that'll be possible. I'd have to go through the very basics of cs before i even touched front and back. Plus I'm not sure if they'll be ready to think like a programmer in this short amount of time. I'm not sure it's even possible to do what they're asking. Any advice on what to do or say? Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 May 2019 03:48 PM PDT Im trying to set up pretty urls so something like projects.html would be seen as /projects. Ive tried a bunch of things but nothing works. Currently, I have a project set up that has an index.html with a link like <a href="projects">projects</a>. That sends me to the new url. I have my htaccess file looking like this: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.html -f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.html [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.php -f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} \.((html)|(php))$ RewriteRule ^(.*)\.([^.]+)$ $1 [R,L] I have no projects folder and I do have a projects.html but the Rewrite rule does not come into effect and I get an internal server error. Does anyone see what I'm doing wrong? [link] [comments]

Why are my images causing lag? Laravel + Vue.js Posted: 08 May 2019 03:01 PM PDT Demonstration of the issue – https://youtu.be/PNW1EOxzIFY I've built my portfolio website via Vue.js within Laravel. As soon as an image is uploaded within a project, the sidebar lags open, but when I disable the image via the dev tools, or just comment out the code, the issue is alleviated. Since the issue is likely specific to my project, I couldn't find anything related to my issue on google, stack overflow, reddit, etc. I've tried compressing the image and using a 1kb image to no avail. I'm not getting any console errors. Heres the code that could potentially pertain to the issue – ProjectController.php
ViewProject.php

Posted: 08 May 2019 03:00 PM PDT I contacted the owner company and they said I would have to purchase a "premium subscription plan" if I want to remove the 'powered by' signature tag on his widget i'm using (it's a news widget). I'm not entirely against paying, but the premium plan is pricey and it includes a bunch of unnecessary features. I'm also getting the vibe that the widget company in question is just squeezing dollars out of me since all i want is just the removal of the signature tag and don't want to pay $XXX annually. Any way to hide this using addition css? (i'm running a wordpress blog) edit: Getting a lot of angry PM's from underpaid devs. I'll pay for the widget and put away your pitchforks [link] [comments]
What are first stage phone interviews like for a (junior) front end developer position? Posted: 08 May 2019 02:59 AM PDT Hi everyone, I am an aspiring junior front end developer and I have 2 phone interviews this week. One said it was an 'initial conversation', the other said it was a phone interview and it would last around 20 minutes, I think it's with the resourcer/talent aquisition. I'm assuming they're non technical.. ? Is it questions like 'what have you leant recently?', 'why do you want to work for us?' Would really appreciate any insight, my stomach is churning already :s [link] [comments]
Keep getting "Hacked By Fighter Kamrul" whenever I install/update my website. What is it? Posted: 08 May 2019 02:43 PM PDT https://i.imgur.com/HwRRtF1.png Image of what my entire site looks like, and when I check the directory my files have been wiped. It also looks to be that Wordpress is installed? However it isn't? Not sure to be honest. Last I checked it isn't. Running the websites on my own box, just recently put them online - now this is happening? Google just tells me what other sites have this issue. What is it? How can I make it so this stops happening all the time? [link] [comments] |
