Why does mongoDB Atlas keep failing to deploy clusters?

    Posted: 10 May 2019 03:24 PM PDT

Context: I'm going through Traversy Media's Learn the MERN Stack tutorial (you can find where I am here) in which I made a MongoDB Atlas account and started building a cluster with the basic settings. The tutorial uses MLab, which was acquired? by MongoDB Atlas, so I've been using this video to go through the steps. I am using AWS, the M0 Sandbox Instance, N. Virgina Region (I am an hour away from there), Replica Set - 3 nodes, no linked stitch app.

Problem: Deploying/creating the cluster keeps failing. It rolls back, restarts, fails again. It's been about 4 hours of this. During the process it will say "0 of 3 servers complete (current action: provisioning 3 servers)" but then it will fail, usually around 5 minutes in. I've tried deleting and remaking the cluster, creating a user, deleting it. Nothing changes.

Research: I've done the usual Google/SO searches for something but it seems no one else seems to have this problem, given I'm not even in the code yet, still on their website.

Are there any steps I can take, settings I can change or alternatives that will make this work? Or am I just at the mercy of their website/servers? Let me know if there are more settings I can give that will better outline my issue. Thanks :|

What's this style called? I'm not sure if there is a name for this element type.

    Posted: 10 May 2019 03:18 PM PDT

If you look at that website, about halfway down the bottom, they have a 1 Bedroom /2 Bedroom / 3 Bedroom section. When you hover over a 2 bedroom, or three bedroom, section, the whole image in the background changes.

    https://www.maac.com/mississippi/jackson/crosswinds/

I'm trying to figure out how that's done. But, since I don't even know what that style is called, I can't dig around for more information.

I've seen this design style in another website before - https://www.thehammerlawfirm.com/ - down in the mid section of the site, they list out all their services. It looks like it uses a similar technique.

Does anyone know how this is done? Can point me in the right direction? I can see this being used for a few different applications. From menu drop downs that change the full site, to selectors that modify a background color, etc.

Finished building and testing website for a project/business. What do I do next to make it live?

    Posted: 10 May 2019 01:33 PM PDT

I just finished building a simple static webpage for a family members restaurant. It just a single page site with a few pictures and stuff.

But what do I do now? How do I host it so its a live site? I imagine I wouldn't use something like firebase or heroku right?

I'm redoing a website for an organization at my school and I'm trying to see how we can make it more affordable. The website is oyfaatuva.com I want to see if we can avoid paying $500 for the domain every 3 years and make it cheaper for our organization. Is there any way we can take the domain and host it on a different site?

If code bootcamps don't work, what is the best way of learning vanilla JS in Toronto?

    Posted: 10 May 2019 09:43 AM PDT

I'm aware that a lot of bootcamps are too fast to learn the real fundamentals and teacher ask you to jump directly into these frameworks. So what's the solution?

1-Preferable learning style - coaching, project based, teacher 2-focus on fundamentals instead of jumping into stuff like React

Goal: become a front-end Dev and designer, so not so much to move to back-end, but between UI and front-end

Even a possible way could be doing a mix, does it help doing python first and taking logic courses at university level? such as introduction to computer science?

    What was your first project?

    Posted: 10 May 2019 03:15 PM PDT

I'm looking for some unique projects to build - away from the endless suggestions of weather apps and todo lists. I've hit a mental block and can't think of any project at the moment. For inspiration, I thought it'd be good to hear what other devs have worked on!

So - what was your first project? How did you come up with the idea? What were the main obstacles you faced and what technologies did you use to build it?

What's your go-to for quickly developing a backend?

    Posted: 10 May 2019 10:40 AM PDT

    Hi fellow web developers,

I'm a full-stack developer. When talking to customers/friends I often hear that there are a lot of frontend templates out there, but that it's difficult for them to develop a backend from scratch (there are some generic backend repos on Github like https://github.com/sahat/hackathon-starter, but they're not customizable, they lack in some areas, and require work before being operational).

I was thinking of developing a "backend template" (similar to all the frontend templates out there) that would be highly-customizable (choosing your language/technologies of choice) and would cover a lot of features which everybody seems to re-develop every project (like user authentication, payment, connection to DB, connection to email account, integration with Docker, easy deployment, logging, etc.), and sell it for a one-time price (similar to how frontend templates are sold).

I was thinking that I could specifically tailor it to popular frontend themes out there, so somebody could literally start a project within 5 minutes.

What do you guys think? Is this something you would use? Is this something that you'd potentially recommend to clients?

I am very eager to start this project already but I want to get as much feedback and do my due diligence before starting out. Thanks in advance?

A client wants me to rebuild a Wordpress site for them. I'm familiar with full stack web development and have built sites from scratch, but I've never touched Wordpress. What's the fastest way to crash course it?

    Posted: 10 May 2019 02:01 PM PDT

Wordpress has always confused me because I never understood where the website builder (like Squarespace and Wix) starts, and where the framework-side ends, if that makes sense. I thought it was just like any other website builder but I guess it's much more? I tried checking it out but almost everything was behind a paywall.

From what I understand there's a lot of PHP but this site is fairly basic, seems like a lot of front end work. It's a basic site where a company worker and login and view some documentation and training videos.

I do want to be very competent with Wordpress since I hear a lot of freelance work is Wordpress, but I'm worried of wasting my time on tutorials that baby-step you through basic HTML/CSS/JS, etc. I'm wondering if there's any good crash courses that are aimed towards experienced developers? Thanks!

What do you offer your clients for hosting packages?

    Posted: 10 May 2019 01:45 PM PDT

I have a few clients who host with me. I'm looking to streamline what I offer for hosting for different packages. Obviously I'm not looking to compete with cheaper web hosts like godaddy and the like but there is a certain value that handling everything for a client in terms of hosting. Most of them can't be bothered by managing their own domain registration or hosting. I'm wondering what I could include or not include and how much to charge for the following packages.

Currently I offer three tiers of packages that include:

    Basic Package

    • 1 Domain Registration
    • Server Maintenance & Updates
    • Monthly File Backups
    • Unlimited Email Accounts
    • 5 GB Storage
    • 2 GB Monthly Bandwidth
    • Email Website Support (Does not include content changes or design changes.)
    • 99.9% Uptime

    Middle Package

    • 1 Domain Registration
    • Server Maintenance & Updates
    • Monthly File Backups
    • Unlimited Email Accounts
    • 5 GB Storage
    • 2 GB Monthly Bandwidth
    • Email Website Support (Does not include content changes or design changes.)
    • 99.9% Uptime
    • Basic SEO Configuration
    • Google Analytics Integration
    • SSL Certificate
    • Private Registration

    Premium Package

    • 1 Domain Registration
