Hi folks, I wanted to check out SICP and Art of Computer Programming as a beginner. Can I know how useful are both? Thanks.

Research in Theoretical CS w/ deficits in mathematics

    Posted: 24 May 2019 03:19 AM PDT

TL;DR: Is a good background in mathematics necessary for doing research in Theoretical CS (Progr. Languages, Algorithms, ...)?

    Hey everyone,

I am finishing my bachelor's degree in CS next semester. Throughout my studies I have realized I have a strong interest in the theoretical sides of CS, much more than in the applied part.

Although I have performed very well in Logics and Theoretical CS courses, I definitely lack some skills in calculus and linear algebra. My worst grades are in these subjects, among probability theory.

I would love to understand these topics better. I blame a) the stress of moving to college & b) the structure of these introductory mathematics lectures for computer scientists (not enough time to cover proofs in detail, not enough time to "construct" e.g. calculus from bottom-up) for my bad performance, though of course other people in the same situation have done better.

I am wondering whether understanding of these topics is necessary for a successful career in research in Theoretical CS, since I feel almost everything in that area is on some level applied mathematics.

Surely, someone who is working on e.g. type theory does not need to understand Differential Equations in detail, but I believe studying mathematics does increase the ability of rigorous thinking and precise formulation.

    Any opinions on this?

A casual hackathon-like competition online (beginner orientated).

    Posted: 23 May 2019 04:41 PM PDT

I love hackathons but I find it a shame there isn't a contest that's casual and easy to join for new startups. So...I created a discord server where members can submit their startup ideas and share their progress.

When the contest ends, we can find some judges to rank the entries and some sponsors for prizes. Currently aiming for 50 unique participants for it to feel like a real competition.

I'll try to expand the server by finding some mentors as well. Feel free to join the discord server!

Convert a map of a city into a graph, i.e, nodes and vertices.

    Posted: 23 May 2019 06:20 AM PDT

I am currently working on a project which requires me to plot a city as a graph, the intersections should be vertices and the roads should be edges. Is there a way to do this. Kindly reply.

When will we have AlphaZero at home?

    Posted: 23 May 2019 12:51 PM PDT

Namely, around what year do you believe home computers will be powerful enough to replicate the feat of AlphaZero, i.e. train a neural network in just a few hours from zero to better-than-GOFAI chess or go?

How do I create a index variable to hold the index of a character? In C?

    Posted: 23 May 2019 03:05 PM PDT

How do I create a variable to keep track of the index itself for a command argument ? For example if it reaches a character that is either '>'or '<' keep the index of that character.
