    Are front-end devs looked down upon by others?

    Posted: 23 May 2019 09:00 PM PDT

    I keep getting this vibe online that back-end developers think front-end work is for simpletons (for the lack of a better word). Is this true or am I imagining things?

    Does having a CS/IT degree make graduating from a Bootcamp more appealing?

    Posted: 24 May 2019 11:09 AM PDT

    I was offered a $3.5k scholarship to attend IronHack Miami, ( On coursereport it seems to be a very highly regarded camp especially for the Miami area).

    I graduated with a Bachelor in IT ( exposed to alot but not great at anything ) but did enjoy the creating and functionality of websites and was drawn to it. The rigors of how maddening but also how beautiful programming/building can be.

    I hear alot of good and bad about bootcamps and came to the conclusion many camps are just shameless scams and unreasonable, others seem to be more helpful whether its networking, curriculum, instructors etc. Although I shouldn't expect an immediate job or 60k plus, but I really just want to get my foot in the door at least .

    I wouldn't even fight 30k-40k a year I'm 24 but the service industry just isn't enough and I need to start somewhere.

    Freelance web developer here, how can I learn more about marketing/branding/design/aesthetics in relation to website construction?

    Posted: 24 May 2019 08:41 AM PDT

    I've learned a ton over these past few years. I am interested in moving towards a more full service "creative agency". How can I learn more about appealing branding and design as it relates to the web?

    How is the best way of finding a project to work on that’s not your own?

    Posted: 24 May 2019 07:22 AM PDT

    I'm looking for experience. I feel like I have the skills to help out on a professional level project, however I don't know how to begin looking. Freelance sites seem to want people who have years sometimes decades of experience. I'm at a loss as to where to get started.

    Survey/Form services with good API integrations that are affordable?

    Posted: 24 May 2019 12:30 PM PDT

    Does anyone have specific recommendations for survey/form services that they like working with?

    Our current provider is cracking down on shared accounts. The single account shared between 3 users in my department with non-overlapping responsibilities has become an issue. We don't mind paying for good service, but tripling the cost is prompting us to look for better alternatives. Separately, they also wanted $8000/yr each to connect with SalesForce and Eloqua (our marketing automation) which both are hard passes.

    In addition to all the normal survey features you'd expect, we're also looking for:

    • Simple branching/skip logic
    • White label - No obvious service branding, but bonus if a custom domain such as survey.our-company.com
    • Advance branding & CSS support - Current provider offers little styling options. Changing the color of an option is not styling.
    • Existing full integrations with Salesforce, Eloqua, Tableau, and optionally Microsoft Flow (or Zapier as a last resort)
    • Offline/kiosk mode (Android/IOS options acceptable)
    • Greatly prefer a per-account vs per-user pricing
    • API for custom integrations

    So, are there any reasonably priced recommendations out there you've used?

    [Serious]Internship "rules"

    Posted: 24 May 2019 12:06 PM PDT

    I have been working with interns/co-ops from universities for awhile now with several businesses. Over time I have tried a set of "rules" (I need a more fun word here) to give the group the learning guidelines. An example:

    • Don't be afraid to speak up, if you disagree.
    • There are not stupid questions.

    What types of "rules" do you give your interns to help make them feel comfortable and to signal this is a learning environment vs. just a job?

    Help! I need career guidance

    Posted: 24 May 2019 10:50 AM PDT

    What should I do to get a higher paying job? I've been applying to jobs consistently now for about 2 months, and every time I get to the final interview I just botch something in a coding test. Every time I'm given a coding challenge it's something I've somehow never seen before, or in a couple cases I've solved the challenge but the interviewer just didn't like how I solved it.

    I know I'm competent because I've received numerous recommendation letters at my current position, and other teams keep trying to take me from the team I'm on because of the work I've done. But it seems no matter how much I learn or practice I can not pass a coding interview.

    In addition I'm starting to question my skill set, should I be learning any different technology that would help with finding a higher paying position and if so what?

    Right now I use: Angular 6, D3.js, NodeJs, Docker, Redis, PostgreSql, Sass,

    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Posted: 24 May 2019 09:46 AM PDT

    I need a service like context.io, since unfortunately they are shutting down. Specifically, I need an API which lets me listen to simply incoming email from the major email providers (GMail, Outlook, Office 365).

    I've been looking into Nylas sync-engine, however they're not under active development and they're last commit is 2 years ago...

    Thanks for the help!!!

    We need an offline solution for image recognition

    Posted: 24 May 2019 09:41 AM PDT

    I and my team are in the final stages of a coding boot camp and we have decided to make a generic treasure hunt game using image recognition gps and react we are in the beginning stages and we have decides to make this project more exciting by conforming to pwa standards and we would like that once a game is downloaded that we can perform somw sort of local image comparison or image recognition on the win condition image and the users supplied image so that the game can be installed locally and played entirely offline, does anyone have any advice on what we should look into. As an example the person makong the treasure hunt game could say find the painting in a gallery and upload the image to our back end and when the player loads our app we will download the image or metadata and allow them to add the app to their home screen but we need a way to compare the similarities offline any help would be greatly appreciated.

    What is WebSql's expected lifespan 2019 and forward? Advice needed on legacy technology and offline storage woes.

    Posted: 24 May 2019 10:38 AM PDT

    Does anyone have speculation for how much longer WebSql will be supported in Chrome/Safari? It was officially deprecated back in like 2010 but seems to still be supported and they are the only browser I need to support. Will it continue to work for the next decade? Dropped next year? Can't find any news or even speculation about it.

    Backstory is that I inherited a legacy project that uses a bunch of deprecated or minimally supported technology [Sql > C# ODATA REST api > jQuery & jaydata JS data access and query layer > a partially setup websql db]. Basically the tech stack explained in this blog post. Most of the documentation and tutorials for the current stack 404 and it's been a pain in the ass to work with, but I'm hesitant to commit to the months of work it would take to replace.

    I need to build out a new offline mode with data synchronization back to server and am trying to assess if it's worth it and safe to continue developing on these technologies or bite the bullet and make a massive overhaul while building the offline feature. IndexedDb seem to be the recommended route but I'm struggling with how that will work synchronizing back to a relational backend SQL db with fk requirements, etc.

    Feeling a sense of impending doom with either path I go down. If anyone has recommended technologies or advice I would appreciate it.

    Am I ready for junior position?

    Posted: 24 May 2019 04:08 PM PDT

    I've been learning React for some time now. I've made famous burger builder from Udemy course with Maximillian and after that I made a small web shop with functionality like login,register,forgot password, log out, pagination, add to cart/wish list, product description page, user profile (full name, address, profile image etc) using firebase as "back end" and redux for state management .

    I'm currently doing internship as QA but that is not my cup of tea, and they are in search for web devs so I was thinking of asking to start of as junior dev since they don't have internship for web dev.

    I'm afraid to ask (really don't know why..whats the worst that can happen?...but I'm still afraid to ask :D)

    I want to hear opinion of a community and see if I am ready for a junior role.

    Here is the link of my github

    Web shop is not yet finished, need to do responsive and couple of things more...but in general that is it.

    I'm open for any critiques

    Using Jquery Validation, require_from_group Method, Form is Valid with Invalid Values

    Posted: 24 May 2019 09:59 AM PDT

    My stack overflow link to my question if you would like to answer there:

    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/56295282/using-jquery-validation-require-from-group-method-form-input-is-valid-with-inv

    This form is a continuation of a form from another view, upon submission of the form, I have created a Jquery script to validate the form inputs, checking that at least one of the inputs has a value before allowing for final form submission. My form is showing as valid, even when there are no values in any of the input fields. I have Jquery validate bundle, including additional-methods.js inside of my BundleConfig.cs

    Inside my console,
    $("hf").valid() returns true,
    $(#qty).val() returns (""),
    $(".pq").valid() returns 1.

    Based on this, to my understanding my form is being shown as valid, with no value in any of my input fields, even though my validation rule for my class "pq" requires a single input. I have queried each input value and all show ("").

    NOTE: I do have an additional Jquery function on the page that totals the order based off of the values for the quantity inputs, multiplied by hidden input values for price. Though to my knowledge this should not be a conflicting issue.

    My HTML:

     <div class="col-md-8"> <label class="pd1" for="product-description"> Product Name </label> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <label class="pp1" for="product-price"> $2,800 </label> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <label for="product-quantity"> @Html.TextBoxFor(c => c.ObjectName, new { type = "text", @class = "pq", name = "qty8", id = "qty8" }) </label> </div> <input name="price8" id="price8" type="hidden" value="2800" /> <div class="clearfix"> </div> <br />

    My JQuery:

     <script> $(document).ready(function () { $("#hf").validate({ rules: { qty8: { require_from_group: [1, ".pq"] }, qty7: { require_from_group: [1, ".pq"] }, qty6: { require_from_group: [1, ".pq"] }, qty5: { require_from_group: [1, ".pq"] }, qt4: { require_from_group: [1, ".pq"] }, qty3: { require_from_group: [1, ".pq"] }, qty2: { require_from_group: [1, ".pq"] }, qty1: { require_from_group: [1, ".pq"] }, qty: { require_from_group: [1, ".pq"] } } }); }); </script>

    I expect the form to fail validation when none of the inputs in my require_from_group script have a value, but even though each value is shown as empty ("") my form still shows as valid in my console and is able to be submitted.

    Why do clients get so pissy when there is a production bug?

    Posted: 24 May 2019 03:51 PM PDT

    Sending rude emails, escalating things to CEOs etc. And my colleagues get really scared of upsetting the client, and gossip about "and then such and such client said this!! It was so bad!!"

    I try to disconnect from the emotional client. And so reply that "I'm working on a fix." Move their email to trash. Close outlook. Fix it and schedule a hotfix deploy it when its done. I don't really care if they "escalate it" or start throwing toys out of their cot.

    No matter how upset they get, a developer won't ever be fired over a single bug, and so there really is no reason to be apprehensive of upset clients.

    I know they're paying for the software. I mean I pay Microsoft for windows and if they release a bug, I just go do something else or find a workaround and come back later. I understand not all bugs can be caught all the time, before a release.

    create users with different data each using PHP and mysql

    Posted: 24 May 2019 03:24 PM PDT

    Hello everyone;

    I am doing a project for school where i construct a student registration system using php and mysql.

    so far, i managed to create a log in page, registration page and when a user registers his data is inserted in a database called "users", and i can log on into a dashboard using the data from "users".

    what i need now is to link each user with his own database, so that each user would have his own data to modify (kinda like a database for each user).

    does anyone knows a link or a tutorial for something like that? i would really appreciate the help.

    Thanks in advance.
