Re-return of the Networking Thread! Post your gamedev-related Twitter Posted: 07 Jan 2019 07:40 PM PST Post your gamedev-related Twitter account here and use this thread to find new people to add to your personal network. Other devs will prefer adding your personal account, as opposed to a player-facing one, but feel free to post more than one account (and specify what they are). Out of respect for others, keep your post short -- we don't need your life story, just a link and a short blurb! Do this right and maybe next GDC, you'll glance at the tiny little Twitter handle on the badge of that person you just met and realize that you're actually long lost friends! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 25 Mar 2019 08:40 AM PDT I often see posts (or sometimes talks, like on GDC) about how lucky you have to be to really sell a good bunch of units of your game on Steam. I personally have a different approach for earning money with games: All my games are/will be free, and I have a Patreon with some advantages - but I have one rule: No full exclusivity. That means that no games are behind a paywall, not even any levels/features. Currently, my only Patreon benefits are for early access, shoutouts, and advertising. Just with that, I built a community and after 1.5 years, I make over $600 a month from Patreon - with a free, unfinished game. And it's growing faster than ever before. Not only do I have a somewhat stable income, my players are also happy, because anyone can play my game - as I said, the only current limitation is that free users need to wait a bit for the latest features. Major releases (x.0.0) are free, the builds between that can be downloaded from Patreon at $4 or more per month. What do you think? What are your experience with selling games vs having monthly donations or even IAP, ads? Am I just really lucky or is Patreon generally more lucrative than selling your game? Would love to hear some opinions on this. [link] [comments] |

Payment processing - what are the best options in 2018 for indie games? Posted: 25 Mar 2019 08:33 AM PDT Hi /r/gamedev! Doing a bit of research: What options exists for accepting <$5 payments that are specifically targeted at games (including any where payments is a side service that is sold in addition to other features - think like HumbleBundle)? What has been your experience with them? How much do they charge? I know of non-game processors such as Paypal/Stripe and also about Steam's payment service already. Anyone have good/bad experiences with those? I've looked through some old threads but unsure of how much/little that information has changed lately. Thanks so much for your help! Posted: 25 Mar 2019 11:58 AM PDT Hello! I am a fledgling lets player on YouTube, and if anyone has any games that they'd like to get some eyes on, I am more than willing to collaborate! PM Me if interested! Essentially I am willing to play mostly anything, I am best suited to smaller groups as admittedly I have a very small fan base, but am hoping we can help each other cultivate great followings. Posted: 25 Mar 2019 11:54 AM PDT It's supposed to be single playing story experience. I wanted to make it that you start off as a regular guy who lived with his dog and his just married wife. Then his home is attacked by goons who attack and rob the family, killing the wife (who also happened to be pregnant, killing her unborn child) and dog. The husband who is about to die is saved by his dogs very last moment of breath and he manages to get out of the burning house painfully with his dog and wife and her unborn child left dead inside. Then it would pick up from their with the protagonist in the hospital after months in a coma and all hell breaks lose from their. Is this a descent story plot? And for the gameplay. After he escapes from the hospital you now have to build your character. You create your path to this storytelling experience like getting yourself first healed up. Living off into the shadows for a while, build your training and fighting skills, it's almost like a survival experience, mixed with some RPG elements with action elements and even racing elements that involve you needing to use a car at times by creating your path and what skills or interactions you will be facing, clues like mystery solving, killing certain bad guys, etc. And you discover a hidden world eventually where trained killers and secret organizations exist. Does this sound like it has potential? [link] [comments] |
To think Of when publishing a game Posted: 25 Mar 2019 11:25 AM PDT Hi devs, First of all, I don't know if this is the right sub. If I landed wrong, please point me in the right direction, thanks! I'm building a game as a hobby and if I someday is satisfied with it I might publish it on Apple AppStore and GooglePlay. What should I think of before posting it? Main purpose is to get a second income from the app (I mean if it's good/fun enough😂) I take any of your experience! Cheers! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 25 Mar 2019 11:23 AM PDT I've decided to put ads into my game, because it has otherwise been a failure. It's fun, it's well reviewed by my customers, but I can't sell it outright, so I'm looking to switch to Free To Play. Since I hadn't considered it before, I would like to know, for those of you who put ads in your games, how do you balance the fun part with the business part? Is there a known point where people just put the game down because of all the ads? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Mar 2019 11:14 AM PDT Hey everyone! I'm a lighting technician and sound designer by day (degree in interactive audio) and an indie dev by night. I was hoping the community of aspiring devs might be willing to let me collaborate on the sound aspect of things for a project? Figured it may allow you to focus on the development side of things and have somebody assist solely on the sound portion to polish the other half of the game/project full time. I have a kid on the way, so I've been looking to meet fellow people motivated to make something great. I've done sound/score for film and games in the past but it's been a while (life took over) since I've been able to focus my attention on something meaningful, and this is a great community. I do use Unity/Unreal myself so I'd be an asset in terms of assisting with implementing the audio portion, or even just to consult. Please feel free to reply or DM me to chat further! All the best and good luck creating, Tdair25 [link] [comments] |
