Using an Indian buffet as a networking event Posted: 26 Oct 2018 02:01 PM PDT This is not meant to be a racist post. I am indian-american myself. I am searching for my first job or another internship. I ended up going to an indian buffet with my girlfriend for lunch. I went to a buffet and it was loaded. Naturally the majority of the individuals there were Indians, and they had their badges of the companies they represented. Paypal, HP, Apple, Amazon, McAffe, you name it , it was there. I took my chances in the buffet line looked at the badges and said oh hey you work for so and so, thats my dream company how do you like it there. I ended up walking out with 3 business cards with people willing to give me a referral. Something different, but best 13 bucks I spent for lunch [link] [comments] |
[Meta] Can you all treat each other with some respect? Posted: 26 Oct 2018 04:14 AM PDT I don't know if it's the frustration of college students trying to find internships, but recently there have been some threads that just get flooded with absolutely inappropriate and mean spirited comments. This is supposed to be a professional careers sub, it blows my mind how unprofessional some people can be on here. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Oct 2018 05:48 PM PDT I recently applied to Epic Systems for their new grad software developer position. After going through the notorious proctored 3 HOUR LONG coding assessment and then a 45 minute phone interview. I was told I would hear back within a week or two. Exactly two weeks after my phone interview I received a rejection email with the reason being " We are not actively hiring for full-time positions that far into the future for this role. " Completed dumbfounded, I reached out to the recruiter asking to clarify the email. Was told that I "listed my graduation date as December 2019". Double checked my application submission and resume, both say the correct grad date which is December 2018. I then reached out again to said recruiter trying to explain everything, I even tried to call (who does that anymore?). The said recruiter completely ignored both my email and voicemail. TL,DR: Went through an awful recruiting process to get rejected because THEY made a mistake about my graduation date. Then they ghosted me entirely despite my attempt to reach out [link] [comments] |
How many people here make low salaries? Posted: 26 Oct 2018 09:16 AM PDT You know like the guys making $50k-$60k in NYC, or the $40k in Austin. How about the seniors with 10 years of experience making $100k in Boston? They certainly exist. I'm just sick of seeing all these people humble bragging about high salaries, meanwhile it's doing more harm to people like me who will never get such a high number. It's personally hurt me. I was one of those who rejected $40k shitty positions just because of what I read on this sub. I would've been more successful not following what I read. [link] [comments] |
Would web design be the most suited job for me? Posted: 26 Oct 2018 06:15 PM PDT I graduated from software engineering this past year. I've been trying to look for a job within this field but I couldn't find one. So I thought maybe I should be a web designer. Why? I currently run a Youtube channel but I know for sure it will never grow to the point where I will make enough money for a living. So Because of this, what if I could do a job that is similar to what I studied + Youtube. The only thing that can come into my mind is Web design. Do you think this job would be right for me? And in general is this type of job secure? [link] [comments] |
How important is home ownership to you? Posted: 26 Oct 2018 02:24 PM PDT This sub seems to focus on the Bay area and Seattle a lot. Do you plan on living there forever? Specifically those of you that move there from low CoL areas, or don't have family that you plan on 1 day inheriting property from. Saving for retirement that includes rent sounds impossible to me. I am really into San Diego and Los Angeles, but I'm not into the whole $800,000 buys you a shitty house thing. I live in Phoenix and 800,000 can buy what most people would consider a "mansion" here. How many of you devs in California and Seattle own or realistically think you'll own your home one day? Maybe its just in my head because all of my coworkers from California say they moved to Phoenix to afford a home. [link] [comments] |
When is a good time to switch teams? Posted: 26 Oct 2018 07:09 PM PDT I am a new grad hire working at a large tech company on the West coast (HQ campus). I want to transfer to a satellite office. - I'm not too keen about the stack I'm currently working on. - I was an intern on the same team, and I got forced/asked back to re-join the team for full-time. - The satellite office is much closer to my SO, family, and friends. How early until I can start asking other teams for a transfer? I did a ~3 months internship, and I've been a full-time for about ~4 months as well, so my total tenure with this team (and company) is ~7 months. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Oct 2018 05:28 PM PDT Hello folks. I'm an electrical engineer but I'm sneaking into this subreddit because it's more active than the engineering subreddits and also because I want to switch into software engineering, hopefully you guys don't mind.
I currently work at one of the big defense aerospace and defense companies in an R&D lab. It's a pretty small place with probably only around 50 people. We design and test jet engines. Mostly everyone who works here is an aerospace engineer and the electrical/software team is composed of only 4 people including myself. This is my first job out of school and I have been working here for a little over a year now. I went to a good state school and graduated with a high GPA (3.8). I really like working with pretty much everyone. Most of the people are very smart and cool people.
I have a few problems though…
One of them was hired around the same time as me and has about 8 years of irrelevant experience (not engineering related). The first week this guy started work he claimed that everyone at his last place was an idiot and he ran the place. I then proceed to learn this guy doesn't understand even basic electrical concepts, to the point where he doesn't know Ohm's law or that P=VI. He also clips his toenails at his desk and eats horribly smelling food in our shared office. The other guy is a middle-aged senior level guy who is insane. He is constantly talking badly about other people in the office to me, getting into fights with other people in the office, and talking about conspiracy theories. Nothing is ever his fault, and he is never wrong. If he has something to say he will interrupt you and talk over you. He also went to a degree mill school (think University of Phoenix). What frustrates me the most with him is that our manager eats his bullshit up. Example conversation:
There are some other problems (like how none of the electrical systems have been documented for the past few decades and all the code is written in VB6 with no comments), but these are the main ones. With all these problems in mind I figured I would stay there for a year and get out, but I have been searching very hard for the past 3 months and cannot find anything. I've had a few phone interviews and one in person. I have done projects outside of work that are relevant to what I want to go into. I understand that it may take a few more months. Saying this, my question is how have you guys dealt with shitty work situations while looking for a new job? I dread going into work every day and feel like I'm never going to be able to find anything. I keep active and go to the gym a lot but I still just can't get my mind off work. I've been losing steam too, last weekend I didn't apply to any jobs and didn't even leave my apartment I just played video games the entire time. I haven't played video games since high school.
Sorry for the huge post. This was really more of a vent.
TLDR: Work sucks, how do I survive the next few months while looking for a new job? [link] [comments] |
This is a little embarrassing... I sound like a dumb-ass. Posted: 26 Oct 2018 04:10 AM PDT Yeah, just this. I know that I sound like an idiot when I try to talk to other programmers, out loud at least. Hopefully when I'm typing it doesn't seem that way but maybe. I just always forget the terms for stuff, so I'm left either not using the right word for something or calling it a "thing" or whatever. Whenever I'm listening to someone talk about this stuff (unless it's one of my professors in one of my classes going over stuff), I'm always catching up because there's a layer of indirection I have to go through trying to figure out what that acronym was, or what concept they're talking about, so I can't interact fluidly or even really comprehend the actual point they're trying to get across. Objectively, I know I'm not dumb and that I'm capable of being a good programmer and computer scientist, I just don't know how to talk to other programmers, I guess, and that I come off just sounding stupid. In class I don't care, what's the point of taking the class if I already know the material? This is obviously a problem in industry though. Does[did] anyone else have this sort of thing? If so, how do[did] you address it? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Oct 2018 02:23 PM PDT I was reached out by a recruiter to interview, and I want to learn more about it. Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions about the program? If you got into it, what was your experience? How hard was the technical interview? [link] [comments] |
Should I Turn Down a Raise as a Low Level Software Engineer in California Posted: 26 Oct 2018 05:34 AM PDT As the post says I am software engineer in California working for a large engineering corporation. The corporation has recently decided to give all its junior engineers (level 1s and 2s) a raise to the median pay for their grade. I currently make $86,250/year and I expect this raise will bump me over the $90,790.07 limit and perhaps even over the new $94,603.25 limit for next year for software developers to be included in the California fair labor laws. I worked a lot of over time this year and was happy to collect the 1.5x and 2x hourly bonus which has bumped my salary up to around 100k. But if I take the raise and it bumps me over the limit I will not be paid at all for my first 5 hours of overtime each week and will only earn my regular 1x hourly rate for each hour after that. My plan is to crunch the numbers before my meeting with my manager this morning and if the number they offer me is over next years limit but less than I earned this year I'm going to either turn down the raise or ask for just under the limit. But I would very much appreciate some other opinions on it as well. Thanks. Update: Thanks everyone for the feedback. I got a 15.86% raise up to $99,960. So I'm now over the limit, but it's not quite enough to cover the loss of overtime potential. My manager said it's not negotiable everyone is getting the raise so I had to take it. For those interested here are the numbers i came up with: Total loss of overtime at 5 hours/week = 260 hours Total amount over limit to compensate for lost OT wage potential: $11,825.41 (if earning at the limit) The salary I was hoping for to comp for OT losses: $106,428.66 If anyone has anymore questions I'll do my best to answer them. Mid-level+ professionals, how important are flexible schedules and Work From Home days to you? Posted: 26 Oct 2018 10:41 AM PDT Would you join a company with a rigid schedule and/or a "No-WFH" policy? Would your company instituting a policy like this influence you to leave? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Oct 2018 05:14 PM PDT Most of the side projects I did I made and never looked at it again. I forgot about most of them until recently. I was thinking of describing the most "impressive" or relevant ones to fill up the rest of my resume. I'm not sure of how impactful this is given that until recently I didn't use source control with most of the ones I did and they are all gone when I had to get a new computer. I have some side projects I can show on github but those are only the recent ones. [link] [comments] |
Career change, junior in CS degree. List past job experience? Posted: 26 Oct 2018 05:05 PM PDT Hi all. So as the title says, I've gone back to school to study Computer Science. I have 10 years of retail and warehouse management experience which is not unsubstantial, but probably irrelevant. Should I list this on my resume and my LinkedIn or should I only list experience that is relevant. Also, if anyone has any suggestions regarding applying for internships as an older student in my low 30's it would be much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Getting a Software Dev job as an IS major? Really need the advice Posted: 26 Oct 2018 02:17 PM PDT Hey guys, So long story short I have to switch to an Information Science Major, with a Concentration in Data Science Major from my CS for a few reasons (and no I can't stay CS unfortunately) However, I still want be a software dev, and more specifically either web dev or maybe the data analytics and science side How much will I be hindered by this degree? Both in the short term and long term? Is it still possible for me to get into software development? Will I need to get a CS masters asap? I had an internship already last summer as a Summer Tech Intern for a decent sized finance company where I was doing software work in Java and SQL. It ended up being moreso a lot of Junit testing and testcase writing rather than actual dev work though, but I've been highlighting the small dev stuff I did there more. Looking for another final internship this summer (Junior) and I'm noticing a lot of places do say CS or other related technical degree. I'm definitely proactive when it comes to learning on the side, so I'm hoping that can carry me + an active GitHub portfolio ————— Courses I've taken from CS before having to switch: OOP 1 and 2 (Java) Intro To Comp Systems (C, Assembly), Calc 1/2, Linear Alg (Matlab), Statistics ————— Coursework I'll be taking with new major over next two semesters. There's still a decent amount of programming done in the major, just not really algorithms/data structures focused but I'd be willing to self learn that: Data Statistics (R) Database design and modeling (SQL) User Centered Design Dynamic Web Apps (JS) Data Sources and Manip (Python) Advanced data science (Python) Intro to Data Viz (Python) ————— [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Oct 2018 07:39 PM PDT Hello, I am new grad who was able to secure a DevOps/SRE position. I will be working with AWS/Azure/Python. I have NO experience with cloud services. Are there any good resources I can use to learn the services. What else should I learn before I start working? Do you have an advise for me? Transitioning to a SDE roleIs it possible to transition into an SDE role. If I take up this role. Will it hinder my chances in the future in terms of growth & $$$$? Thanks for your time [link] [comments] |
Anyone ever intern at Fannie Mae? Posted: 26 Oct 2018 03:50 PM PDT If so, how was your experience? What did you like/dislike about it? This is for a software developer intern position btw. Any thoughts are appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Oct 2018 08:16 AM PDT Any of you interned at JPMC in the past in a technology role - what were your overall impressions coming out of it? [link] [comments] |
Worth trying to negotiate offer from GS? Posted: 26 Oct 2018 07:30 PM PDT Got an offer for a summer internship with goldman. It's for 100k pro-rated plus 1.5k housing and 1.2k travel stipends. Not sure if this is decent or not considering its NYC. They said they hook interns up with dorms at NYU over the summer, so not sure about this. I'm also waitlisted for Microsoft, as in they ran out of flight-slots for interns and now I'm stuck in limbo. I heard Microsoft's offer this year is 7100 a month + housing, and their name is better from a tech perspective. Anyways my deadline is Nov 8th. I know it's not a Big N, but it's still an okay offer, right? I also want to pursue a phd in AI after undergrad, so not sure if having GS on my resume would hurt me, as it's not techie enough. Should I also try to negotiate the offer to try to get 9k a month? Right now it works to 8400 a month but I'd prob shell out like 1k a month for NYU housing. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Oct 2018 07:30 PM PDT I would like to transition into a career in CS/software engineering. My background consists of a 4-yr degree in math with some exposure to computer science (algorithm courses, Java, Python, Lisp), as well as several years of experience in the financial industry with some light programming. If this post would be a better fit in another subreddit, please let me know! [link] [comments] |
help me decide what to do next Posted: 26 Oct 2018 07:21 PM PDT Hey cs people. This is my first post here. Please take it with light heart if possible. I have been into coding for the last 7 years. I had a business (automation and development) till last year then it just DIED. The business was related to 2 clients, so I could not give time to anything else. And then one day the clients backed off and I was left with nothing. Struggling for the past year, I honed my skills to the top notch level. I know PHP (from old days), JavaScript and now use Python as my main weapon. The thing is I know all sorts of coding stuff and automation but due to several reasons I cannot do a fulltime job. I tried UpWork but finding clients is so-so-so difficult out there without a bright shining portfolio or a bright shining profile. How do I prove that I know the stuff in and out and get some client? or in short, what is the point of learning so much when making money is so difficult right now? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Oct 2018 07:17 PM PDT Offer 1: giant ISP, work as Network Dev/Ops Engineer. 100k, low COL. East Coast (bleh), outside a city. Offer 2: consulting firm, work as Security/Tech Consultant. 77k with 10k signing bonus, Low COL. Midwest city that I like. I have no idea what to do. Has anyone worked as either and can provide insight into what I would really be doing? Or have any advice on what I should consider to decide between them? I'm not sure what all the network job entails, though I know it's common to work crazy hours and would require an on-call. My biggest issue is that 30k, as well as the fact that I visited offer 1 this week and feel guilty considering other places after meeting everyone. Thanks so much if you have advice or anything. I honestly have no idea which one sounds better and would appreciate any insight. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Oct 2018 03:24 PM PDT This is not a request for a review of a specific resume, so I'm hoping it doesn't get removed. I think this will apply to at least "several other people." I do a "functional" resume on page one and then have the employment history on page two. I've got a long employment history. Some electronics, lots of network management, some technical writing, plus lots of irrelevant stuff and school scattered in between. Said history is now just long enough to push past a single page of some pretty condensed information. So, here's the question: Is OK for those of us with long employment histories to simply leave out those irrelevant positions (while noting that in the header), or should we still list all the positions (for continuity's sake) and just strip as much info out of those entries as possible? [link] [comments] |
Can you still apply to SWE internships as a Data Science masters student? Posted: 26 Oct 2018 06:52 PM PDT I failed to get an internship in my junior year as an undergrad so I am planning to get an internship at my 1st year as a Data Science masters [link] [comments] |
