Massive use of flexbox layout is putting me at odds with some coworkers. Can I keep going?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 03:00 PM PDT

I'm a general purpose programmer and for many years I've been programming websites. As an avid learner and perfectionist, I try to get better with new tech. I got pretty good with old school CSS, and then flexbox came around.

Once flexbox got supported by enough modern browsers, I started using it and now my development speed has skyrocketed!

A couple of my coworkers joke about the fact I'm flexboxing all the time, but the truth is, they are not familiar with the tech and prefer to stay "old school".

Me, on the other hand, use it a lot to create responsive layouts without. It's the layout we've been waiting for for years!. For example, it's very rare nowadays for me to be floating elements...

Is there anything wrong in my approach?

What soft skills make the best Web Developer?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 08:05 AM PDT

What are some useful soft skills for a successful Web Developer and what are some good book recommendations?

For example, I'm currently reading "Emotional Intelligence" by Daniel Goleman because being a successful developer isn't just about being super logical, it's also about having emotional intelligence to get along with your coworkers and to know yourself well.

Looking for some help getting Google Ad's onto my site

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 04:19 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I own and develop https://www.mtgranks.com. The site is getting to the point where my expenses are adding up. The goal is to get Google Adsense to provide ads on my site in hopes of providing enough monetization to pay for the expenses and continue to host and provide this content.

Google has a fairly strict, yet vague, set of guidelines that I keep failing to pass. My hope is someone/everyone could give my site a glance and maybe give me a few pointers as to what I can do content or structure-wise that may help with my chances to be accepted into Google's ad program.

    Thank you

Looking for an API like Google Places, but without the licensing restrictions

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 01:46 PM PDT

I'm building an app for fun. It's meant to be similar to yelp, but only for places that have pool tables. And I want the data to be user generated. I was thinking about using Google Places to allow searching for a businesses and then marking it in our system as being a place with a pool table. But I think Google's license doesn't allow for that. These are the parts of the license that make me think I can't use it for this.

    >Customer will not:(i) pre-fetch, index, store, reshare, or rehost Google Maps Content outside the services;

    >(b) No Creating Content From Google Maps Content. Customer will not create content based on Google Maps Content, including tracing, digitizing, or creating other datasets based on Google Maps Content.

Anyway, I'm looking for an API that's similar but without the limitations to use. I'm just doing this for fun, so I doubt I'd get in any trouble, but you never know, maybe it'll grow. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Would love to be able to share it and have others use it when I'm done. Maybe one api for address lookups an another for geoencoding? I'd like to also be able to match on business name though, since most people don't just know addresses of bars off the top of their head.

Sorry for the long post. Anyone have suggestions for APIs I could use?

How widespread are the standards of project file layouts?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 09:55 AM PDT

Project organization is something that I rarely hear or read about, so I think it might be a helpful topic of discussion.

I've always laid out my project files in a way that I find very intuitive. Whether working on a static site, a react, node, PHP or any other type of project.

I don't work with a lot of other developer's code, but I do like to watch or go through tutorials (even if it's for things I know how to do) because sometimes I'll pickup new techniques or new way of doing thing. (or shortcut for things that I would do manually).

I was watching this Udemy course called the Advanced Web Developer Bootcamp. In the final project, the presenter is creating this Twitter clone. I feel the way he lays out the client-side project files are really confusing. I get the idea that he bundles all of the separate files together in an index of the directory (all of the reducers into a reducer index), but he names several files the same thing. For instance, if he's creating a users component. He'll name the component file Users, then the actions file Users, then the reducers file Users. While I would do things called UserComponent or UserActions.

Is there a standard for naming or organization in the industry, or do you have a preferred way of doing things?

Make submit-button available ONLY AFTER a specific input-field is filled?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 11:49 AM PDT

    Hi!

I'm working on a project where I want the users to first fill in one specific input-field before the Submit-button becomes available (I want it to be grayed out until the required input-field has been filled).

There's going to be multiple inputs to fill, but only one (the title) is required to submit it.

    Thanks!

Hosting Provider Recommendation for Reseller Accounts?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 03:16 PM PDT

I have a reseller account (shared) with InMotion, but lately the sites take way too long to load.

I have about 25 websites (some WordPress, mostly HTML/PHP sites) that I'm hosting for my clients.

I'm just wondering what other web designers use to host their clients' websites.

Will upgrading to VPS reseller hosting account resolve the issue?

    Thanks.

How do you decide which animation type to use? Efficiency for the metric.

    Thoughts on Webcomponents

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 01:13 PM PDT

So lately I have been using stenciljs to build webcomponents and really love the ease in which this new technology works. However webcomponents adoption still appears relatively low.

Is this due it being a newish technology or is there other reasons for it.

I'd love to get people's thoughts on what a think about webcomponents and what we can do to drive adoption especially in open source project where I see them getting the most benefit.

Force browser to parse a .svg file as a .jpg (Apache)

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 01:11 PM PDT

Ok, this is a bit of a weird use-case. I am sending .jpg data that has a .svg extention. It works fine when I send it from PHP, where I can set the appropriate headers, but if I save the data to a file, and load it directly, the browser won't parse it. Is there any way to get around this so the browser knows to parse the file as a jpg without running the file through PHP?

How to realize 2 different versions for mobile and desktop?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 12:01 PM PDT

I was wondering whats the best way to achieve having a different mobile and desktop version for a Web App/Website. Youtube for example has a different layout for the mobile and desktop web version. When on mobile youtube.com will redirect to m.youtube.com.

How do I decide which platform I'm currently on? Is it solely decided with the screen width? If yes what screen width are usually interpreted as mobile and what as desktop?

Imagine I have a Web App created with Angular/Vue/React. How would I create 2 different versions?

Would I have one project where I create two different pages, one for mobile and one for desktop for every page/component. Then redirect the user depending, which device he's on, either to /mobile/pageX and /desktop/pageY? This way I would have one project meaning one domain/hosting.

Or would I create 2 separat projects with 2 separate hostings and everytime the app is loaded it checks if the user is on the according device? If he's not he will get redirected to the other hosting address?

Or are both ways wrong? What is the best solution?

EDIT: I don't mean CSS media queries. I might be wrong but I don't think its that powerful to change the whole layout and behavior of a Web App. To what extend would you use CSS media queries?

should i attend a bootcamp if i have 2 years experience?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 09:51 AM PDT

ive been learning web development for around 3 years now with 2 of those years working professionally as a frontend dev. i just returned back to canada after working in europe for 2 years and now i that im back i have to go back on the job hunt. the reason i went to europe initially was because i couldnt find/land a job back home (toronto).

the difference now is that i have some professional experience but im still not sure if this will be enough for me to land a job even with a strong portfolio. the market here is very competitive and im thinking of joining a bootcamp to make use of their networks.

do you think this is a good idea? thanks

Since I'm scared of being sued for password/email leaks in case of being hacked, what are alternative approaches that still allow the user to log in and save/edit info on your site?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 09:44 AM PDT

As a webdev newbie, usually when the worst thing can happen to me in development, it does. So I'd rather not set myself up for being sued if my site got magically popular but then got hit with a data leak that put peoples' info at risk. What are approaches that absolutely avoid this risk while still letting users log in, customize accounts, etc? Thanks.

I am designer who can code in p5.js, how can i collaborate with frontend developers to make it robust/professional?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 03:32 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm a UX designer. I work with an enterprise product startup. So far my work was purely functional and it was easy to collaborate with the tech team. My latest assignment was to make a company website. It had to be persuasive rather than functional. So, the design has some simple animations and parallax scrolling. I prototyped it on p5.js.... however, i'm not sure how they will load on mobile devices and not sure if it's robust in general. I need to hand over this to the tech team. The tech team is somewhat inexperienced and so am I! What's the best way to collaborate? I'm afraid they'll scrap the whole effort if they can't translate it. So, I want to be prepared.

What are the frameworks that websites like this use to make the animations and novel interactions? https://upperquad.com
