My Career in Videogame Programming Is Derailed. What next? Posted: 19 Oct 2018 02:21 AM PDT I need help reframing the bullshit life has thrown at me. I have worked professionally as a Software Engineer in the Video Game Industry for the past seven years. Prior to that, I built a ton of games in college, and a couple more in high school. The entire reason I entered the programming space came from my love of videogames. My career is derailed because I am now suffering from debilitating migraines. Usually they are not the painful kind, but the silent kind. I get lightheaded, dizzy, groggy, and agitated by backlit screens. I can feel like this for days. I can't read, I can't drive. It's miserable. Triggers: Recall those seizure warnings on most games? Those triggers cause my migraines: strobe lights, fancy particle effects, 3D camera swings, etc. 30 minutes of mild exposure is enough. I thought my migraines were caused exclusively by 3D games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, but the last game I played was Celeste, a 2D platformer, and that game caused a migraine that lasted over a week. My bullshit is hereditary. My mom has the same triggers and symptoms. She started having migraines in her early 30s and I am approaching that age. I know my migraines are not psycho-somatic because I played and loved Zelda: Breath of the Wild for months without understanding why I felt sick and dizzy the whole time. - I have always been certain about my career path, so this is psychologically devastating. How can I build games when I can't play them? What if my migraine sensitivity gets worse and I can't work on computer screens at all? I am a workaholic. My entire life has been anchored around the stability of my career, and now that my career is uncertain, I constantly feel anxious. Short-term, I am coasting on my current job. I really like my team and don't want to leave. Medium-term, I have thought about re-inventing my career in another CS field, such as Full-Stack Developer, but I am not putting the effort into it. I prioritize friends over side projects, and I hate how I feel when I practice programming interview questions. I think it's a combination of denial and emotional baggage from previous interview experiences. I am single and have a large amount of savings. I have no significant restrictions besides my fears. How can I move forward in my life? [link] [comments] |
Has anyone switched/broken into new industries without prior experience pertaining to said industry? Posted: 19 Oct 2018 03:09 PM PDT If so, how did you manage to do it? I was wondering if, as an entry-level SWE, you can just apply to a company in another industry straight-up, and hope that they'll teach you what you need to know, or if it requires a great deal of self-learning to determine that. If anyone's had this experience, could you share? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Oct 2018 11:05 AM PDT I'm a bit down recently. I started having extremely debilitating pain for the past two years. Before this year, it wasn't too bad to the point where it was affecting my work. This year is a different story and it's getting worse. Last month, it got to the point where my hands were curling up. I couldn't move them. I started having intense headaches. I couldn't walk. I couldn't speak- my jaw was locked. I started getting intense pain everywhere at random times. I decided I needed to see a doctor. Long story short, I'm in the process of getting a diagnosis that might be fibromyalgia or something neurological. I love programming. This job is the only thing I've ever wanted. I feel like it's being stolen from me. I've worked hard to earn my computer science degree. I've had multiple internships that I loved. I'm scared that after earning this degree, that my options for my career are becoming more limited. I have a hard time using my hands- typing, writing causes debilitating pain on top of the rest of my symptoms. My question: what jobs should I look into with this computer science degree that don't involve heavy use of my hands? I have a concentration in cyber security. I have such a strong passion for this kind of work, but even with medication, I'm really struggling. I could really use some advice. Thanks, all. [link] [comments] |
Asana vs Akuna Capital for an internship Posted: 19 Oct 2018 11:19 AM PDT I'm very fortunate to have received offers from both Asana and Akuna Capital for a SWE internship next summer (I never would've thought I'd make it this far)! I've assessed the pros and cons of both as I see it, but I would greatly appreciate some input on which one I should take! Hourly pay is nearly the same for both ( a little higher with Akuna), but, Akuna provides full housing and Asana provides no housing. I wanted to work at a small company this year, coming from a large corporation, so I see that they both fit in that regard. I do not know exact offer details for Asana, but I've spoken to some who have Asana's offer for next year. Asana:
Akuna Capital:
Overall, I want to take Akuna's offer, but Asana is making it difficult for me to do that. Ever since the last few months, prop trading sounded so intriguing to me. Even though I'm not directly influencing the trading, I think I enjoy the business. Asana's product is pretty cool and I think (but I'm not sure) its met with higher prestige in tech. I also really enjoyed the talks I had with the interviewers. I just want to do what's the best for my career going in the future, where I'll be happiest, and where I can make the most out of the opportunity. Essentially this boils down to the ol' prop trading vs tech company argument. I don't think there's a wrong answer here, I'd just appreciate insight. :) EDIT: Both offers are extremely competitive, PM if you want numbers [link] [comments] |

How do I decide between internship offers for companies? Posted: 19 Oct 2018 09:09 AM PDT Hi, I have a really tough decision, and I know I've been super fortunate and lucky, but I really want to get some advice on which decision to make. I have a few offers, and I'm currently deciding between a Big 4 (one of Big G/FB) or a startup (all of Databricks/Stripe/Lyft). I'm leaning heavily towards the startups, as I've had previous experience with bigger companies. However, I'm not sure which company is best for a future career. Stripe's office was extremely pleasant, and their culture is where I'd fit probably best in. Lyft seems to have interesting problems, and they're guaranteeing a project of my preference for me. Databricks is also guaranteeing the same, and seems to have super interesting problems, but I'm not sure how well I fit in with company culture after visiting. I'm looking for the place with the best technical problems / highest engineering bar / full time salary / most importantly, best for my resume for full time (whether I take new grad or not). I saw another post with very similar companies, but responses were more negative. I don't know where else to ask if this isn't the right place, but does anyone have any guidance here? Again, I know that all of these companies are great, but I'm really bad about second guessing myself and would love a second opinion. I also just don't know which factors are most important, and everyone says different things with searches. Thanks so much—feel free to PM me about specific questions, and I am so thankful for any help. [link] [comments] |
Good reasons/explanations/excuses to renege offer? Posted: 19 Oct 2018 07:34 PM PDT hi so i emailed my recruiter to renege an offer and said my "situation changed" and he replied asking about my "situation". i feel bad since he's a good recruiter - super responsive and all. what are some nice/reasonable explanations to explain reneging an offer? i don't want to piss him off because he might tell my school. it was for an internship - got a unicorn offer i just couldn't refuse but i don't want to tell him i am reneging because of that. what is the nicest bs explanation i can give that's realistic (not like my mom died or something like that) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Oct 2018 04:43 PM PDT So IBM just offered me a coding challenge on Hackerrank. I'll be honest and say I haven't done these challenges for practice so often so I'm definitely not ready. Anyways, I have three days to do the challenge and it's timed for 90 min so I get to choose when I want to do it in those three days pretty much. That being said, what can I do to increase my chances of passing the challenge? I'm planning on doing it like tomorrow or the day after. Just really nervous, so any tips are appreciated. Should 2019 graduates apply only for positions asking specifically for new grads? Posted: 19 Oct 2018 04:54 PM PDT Is it worth applying to companies that don't specify that they're looking for 2019 college graduates? If the company is just asking for entry-level / junior developers for a position available now, will they potentially hire a student who can't start until many months later? I see a lot of advice here saying to apply early but I don't know if y'all mean 'just apply for "2019 new graduate" postings' or not. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Oct 2018 08:00 PM PDT Has anyone interned at Lyft Level 5 (self-driving)? I know it's pretty new, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me about their experience. Thanks so much!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Oct 2018 05:06 PM PDT Hey so I'm learning Python and am seriously reconsidering my career track because I heard AI/Machine Learning is simple and I'm also unfamiliar with what Python can be used for. What are some cool Python projects that you have heard of that help you stay motivated to learn? I am a high school senior who is considering a career in CS or Journalism. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Should I be honest with my boss? Posted: 19 Oct 2018 06:27 PM PDT My boss has asked us (his subordinates) to provide feedback about his performance. I feel like he is not doing such a good job. He doesn't hold anyone in the team accountable. He doesn't provide honest feedback when someone performs horrible (even though you can tell he knows that person did horrible based on his body language). He is very tech savy, and I really like him. I think he could be even better if he were conscious about the things he is doing wrong (atleast the things I think he is doing wrong). At the same time I don't want to come across as an asshole (or ruin my chances of getting a bigger check, just being honest....). How should I approach this situation? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Oct 2018 11:29 AM PDT Does anyone have any experience with Cruise? Are they considered a strong company? I'm interested in their work, but don't have a lot of background information on the company itself. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Oct 2018 12:59 AM PDT When I tell him about job responsibility and ethics he mocks me saying shit like "getting all sentimental aren't we" and "the market is lawless" Worst part is that he's also saying that many of his colleagues do this crap. They hire people based on whim and likeability. It's infuriating [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Oct 2018 03:49 PM PDT Hello, Sorry if this is the wrong place or has been asked before - I searched but couldn't find. Is there a tool/site that shows you equivalent salaries/cost of living? I've looked around but nothing's quite been right. Obviously these things are not black and white, but something along the lines of: To maintain the same standard of living - 50k in London = 90k in New York = 40k Paris = 130k California etc etc. I'm trying to plan progression but it's hard to figure out what equivalent salaries are, when taking into account rent, cost of travel, etc etc. Anything would help! Thank you 😊 [link] [comments] |
Considering 2 offers (JP Morgan VS Yext) Posted: 19 Oct 2018 05:31 PM PDT Both are for SWE positions. The reason I'm having trouble is because I heard JP Morgan's SEP internship was revamped recently, so maybe the projects/etc. have been more interesting/competitive? The compensation for Yext is higher by a small margin, but I think I value the potential for return offers as well. So as far as long term goes, should I consider the fact that I may be able to get a return offer at JP Morgan more easily than getting a return offer at Yext? (This would be my last internship in my undergrad) If anyone has experience working in JP Morgan OR Yext in terms of what they did, how they liked it, etc. I'd really appreciate it! Posted: 19 Oct 2018 08:43 AM PDT Recently started using LinkedIn premium and noticed something interesting. Most of the jobs I apply to on the platform (jr. level, 0-2 yrs exp) have like 60-80% masters level applicants. Don't have further breakdown regarding area of study, etc. These are all in the bay area. I'm wondering if anyone on the hiring side has any insight into this. Are these mostly foreigners who did masters for H1B purposes? Without external incentives I would assume that the breakdown would be roughly reversed, with 60-80% of applicants holding bachelors. When is the best time to ask about working from home? Posted: 19 Oct 2018 12:48 PM PDT I really like the idea of working from home, even only a day or two a week. I'm not sure when to approach this subject though. I feel like if I bring it up in an interview, it might send a wrong signal. If I wait a few months until some trust has been established, I might find out that there is zero flexibility in that area and now I've passed on jobs that might have given me the freedom to work remotely. At my current job, I spend the entire day at a cubicle, with my headphones on, with zero face-to-face interaction with anyone. It seems like an incredible waste for me to spend an hour a day in my car, commuting to a job that could just as easily be done from home. I'd like to avoid that as much as possible with my next job, but I also don't want to give my employer a reason to not consider hiring me by asking at an incorrect time. What's the best way to handle this? [link] [comments] |
Chances of getting a job after doing MSCS in USA for international students. Posted: 19 Oct 2018 08:09 PM PDT President Trump has introduced new rules and regulation about the H1B and the F1 visa(latest one) has left me in dubiousness about my MS plans.I plan to return to my country after having some years of job experience in the USA but with the current scenario getting worse for international students, is it worth going to the states for masters in CS. Posted: 19 Oct 2018 08:06 PM PDT I'm graduating in May and have a full time offer lined up with a unicorn in Seattle that just filed for a S-1. I accepted the offer a couple of weeks ago, but right after I signed everything I realized I didn't clear up with my recruiter what would happen if the company were to IPO before I received my RSU grant through their RSU plan. It says it's contingent upon board approval and that I would receive the grant 120 days before my starting date. This might be a silly question, but would I get the same amount in stock units if I start after they IPO or is it invalidated now? Has anyone else been in a similar position than can share some tips for the process? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Oct 2018 07:32 PM PDT Hi all, I'm looking to go from public school teaching into a programming job and maybe more. I have a BS in Pure Math from UCSB, took a couple of CS classes while doing that, and am taking a few CS courses at a community college to gauge my interest. I figured that I would need additional credentials to even make it past HR screening for programming jobs, which is why I want to apply for a MSCS program for next fall (they're due in December). I'm looking at UCLA and UCI as my top choices, but curious about the CSUs. It seems that they're cheaper, but I don't know whether employers will care where the degree comes from. Also, if anyone could gauge my chances at a grad program, that would be great: 3.77 GPA GRE Verbal Reasoning: 161 (87%) GRE Quantitative Reasoning: 170 (98%) GRE Writing: 4.5 (80%) CS Courses: Intro to Python, Programming in C++, Object Oriented Programming, Data Structures Thanks! I don’t know if I can do a CS degree anymore Posted: 19 Oct 2018 07:21 PM PDT I decided to go back to school because I couldn't find a good job with my first degree, so I've never really had a full time job besides summer work. I really enjoy programming but the math is absolutely destroying me. Every single math course during my first and second year I've had to retake because I'm really bad at math. So my first year I failed 3 classes, the second time I took them I struggled and barely scrapped passes, mind you this was intro level calculus, discrete math and statistics courses. I've put off taking another required math course because I'm scared to take it. I had a discrete math test this and I spent weeks studying for it, and I ended up with 40%...I don't know if I can do it anymore. If I fail one more course I have to take a year off of school because of student loans/funding issues, if I fail another one it turns into 2/3 years. I already have a ton of student debt and I can really afford to stretch out this degree. I even lowered my course load to 3 courses instead of 5 per semester in hopes of being able to focus better but I'm still struggling. This was supposed to be a second career for me since my first one never worked out and I'm freaking out because I don't know what to do anymore. I'm 24 and need to get something done. But I don't know realistically if a University degree is within reach. I've considered dropping out, working and saving up money to do a Bootcamp instead but I'm scared that will get me no where. The programming courses are getting more and more mathy which is scaring me, though I really do like the programming. I don't know what to do anymore. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Oct 2018 07:14 PM PDT I am in final year and very much interested in data science and machine learning. I want to do my final year project on ML , I have intermediate experience with almost all ML algorithms... I have done handwritten character recognition with my own dataset, a chatbot using NLP and vehicle count using openCV. I was wondering if the community can help me choosing a good final year project , or a good project idea. TIA [link] [comments] |
Does anyone have experience with Trapeze PASS fleet management software? Posted: 19 Oct 2018 07:09 PM PDT I'm trying to figure out a more efficient way of inputting data into the system. Right now, it is a really mundane task of copy and pasting the data from an Excel file and then clicking several times to get through various panes before finally pasting it and then saving it. Rinse and repeat for approximately 200 data points. Does Trapeze PASS have Import Excel support? [link] [comments] |
