    My feelings about JSX

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 05:51 AM PDT

I know I'm about to get down voted to oblivion for this, but every time I have to use React I have nightmares about someone creating a CSS framework that encourages you to embed HTML and JavaScript IN CSS...

I jolt awake in a sweat drenched bed right as it starts gaining popularity.

Website Launch Checklist has proved popular since I last shared it a year ago, so decided to give it a refresh (both content and design) for 2018

How do I get better at CSS?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 11:23 AM PDT

I've been coding for over a year now and am pretty up to date on the JavaScript side of things (node, react, redux) but what consistently kicks my ass is the CSS.

I constantly have to look up how to do things and am never sure if this way really is the best practice. I've used SaSS and other preprocessors but I've found my actual skills (not tooling) is very mediocre. I want to dedicate time to it,but not sure where to start or what to focus on.

What sites do you visit daily/weekly to get latest webdev news, knowledge, discussions?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 07:58 AM PDT

Obvious examples would be /r/webdev and hackernews, but I'd like to hear other suggestions both general topic ones as well as very specific communities (say, React news/blogs).

I want to start making websites for clients, but need some advice

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 06:11 AM PDT

    Hello,

I started making websites for fun a couple of years ago and have gotten quite good at it (imo). I'm currently studying but want to make some money on the side by making websites for clients. I'm kind of hesitant to start though, since I've always started from 'scratch' and never really gotten into CMS's. I want to do fullstack development and currently only have experience with HTML, CSS, JS and PHP. I kind of want to branch out to nodejs for the backend as well.

The one thing that kept me away from a CMS is the fact that it doesn't give you a lot of freedom (at least, that's what I think). I've been looking into a headless CMS and found one that works with node, but I'm wondering if this is a proper solution. One of the advantages a CMS brings is that a client can easily create new pages and expand their website like that, and I haven't found a headless CMS that lets you do that easily (which makes sense, considering that it's basically just a content API).

Please let me know if you have experience with this and if a headless CMS is a proper solution. Thanks in advance :)

Jr Front end dev here: I've been offered a position as a Salesforce Developer and I'm wondering what to expect from this career

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 06:14 AM PDT

As the title says. I'm kinda of a newb at web dev, have been working with vanilla front end tools for a few years, and started to play with more complex and modern JS frameworks such as Angular and React for about a year now.

How decent is a career in Salesforce development? Some points are really unclear to me so far.

    • is the money good?
    • I'm worried I might get behind the more modern trends if I stick to Salesforce only
    • for how long will Salesforce be a popular CRM?

I'd be very grateful if you guys could give me some insight on this.

Do you prefer to learn from crash courses or normal courses and why?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 06:36 AM PDT

I mean by the crash course, a type of courses that is one hour ( maybe less or more ) video explaining all the fundamentals of specific subject.

recently started to float on the surface on the web development's tutorials.

These are some YouTube channels make those videos.

    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLillGF-RfqbYeckUaD1z6nviTp31GLTH8

    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGLfVvz_LVvSX7fVd4OUFp_ODd86H0ZIY

so do you guys prefer those videos to learn or the normal small videos tutorials ( Like Udemy )

I'm collecting information to use it on project I'm working on. and I'm sorry for my poor English.

An Introduction to Moving from PHP to Node (with sample code)

Graduating with Associate's Degree in CS. I want to go to coding bootcamp in 2018. Is this a good move?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 05:52 AM PDT

EDIT: I want to go to coding bootcamp in early 2019.

As the title says I am graduating with an associate's degree in Computer Science which means that I will have taken Intro programming in Java, OOP in Java, Intro to Data Structures & Algorithms in Java, Computer Organization & Architecture, Intro to Database Management Systems (SQL Server), and Discrete Mathematics. I have no desire to get a 4 year degree. Yes, I realize not getting the degree will close some doors for me and I am okay with that.

I want to take the Software Guild's Java Bootcamp at one of their physical locations.

Will this get me an entry level job? Can I maintain employment within the field if I continue to learn on my own even if I do not have the 4-year degree?

My friend has a GED, no degree, is self-taught and makes six figures a year doing Javascript and has had a steady job for the past five years so he gives me hope.

    Does anyone here use Ansible?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 08:13 AM PDT

I have recently had to configure a Digital Ocean box with MongoDB and as I knew that I would have to setup other boxes later, I thought about automate this rather boring task. I was amazed at how fast and reliable it is to work with Ansible, I started to take a look at it this Tuesday so I'm still getting the hang of it. I was really really happy with the final deploy so I decided to share it, hopefully it might be useful for someone out there.

    So here it is: https://github.com/MarvelousWololo/ansible-mongodb

There is also an amazing introductory course on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icR-df2Olm8&list=PLFiccIuLB0OiWh7cbryhCaGPoqjQ62NpU

What do you guys think about FrontPage on steroids applications?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 01:08 PM PDT

So recently a classmate of mine showed me a website where you could build complete websites from scratch, inclusive with animations. Just with drag and dropping. And on top of all that: The code was friendly and actually looked pretty good. As it was written by someone, completely responsive and not pixel based.

It was pretty frightening, because we're both studying webdesign. And well, if webdesign get that easy; why are we still here? I personally love to write code, creating something from scratch in an editor and a few hours later there's something on the screen. But I could do the exact same thing with these kind of website build applications where you just drag drop and "sort of like photoshop" your way to a website.

What are your thoughts about these kind of applications and the future of webdesign?

    Hey folks.

Found that new browser concept created by two kids in Germany — Refresh Browser

First of all, what do you think of it?

And secondly, how hard do you think is actually building a new browser like that? Appreciate some insights.

Is it possible to show/hide list elements based off a custom URL using HTML?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 02:59 PM PDT

Sorry if my title is difficult to understand. I'm using Gitlabs for hosting (no databases), so I think I'm limited to HTML & CSS for what I want to accomplish.

What I'd like to do is display a static list of items, and have checkboxes by the items to generate a custom URL that can be shared with someone else to only display those selected items when someone clicks the link.

For example, if I had a complete grocery list with the following items:

    • Bananas
    • Oranges
    • Apples
    • Pears

And a user would be able to select Bananas and Apples, get a link, and when shared, it would only show:

    • Bananas
    • Apples

I'm fine if the URL looks a bit messy like:

    baseurl.com/?=Apples&Bananas&...

But I'm also open to other ideas if there's a better way to do this.

    Thanks!

Chrome usb remote debugging over android not working anymore

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 02:16 PM PDT

Up until few days ago everything was working fine, but today for some reason chrome's usb remote debugging doesn't work anymore

    Followed every step from: https://developers.google.com/web/tools/chrome-devtools/remote-debugging/

The device seems to be correctly attached, it shows up as connected in the remote devices panel and port forwarding is correctly enabled

Then I'm turning on my WAMP server and localhost:8080/ works as expected on my desktop, but if I try to open on my mobile device e.g. localhost:8080/anyPage

I see "Connection denied from localhost" - "ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED" or "ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE". Inspecting the network tab on my desktop shows that the download fails, and nothing else.

It was working just fine up until few days ago, what could be causing this? I tried reinstalling chrome to no avail

PS: I can inspect other pages on the internet just fine, but anything coming from localhost:8080 seems to be broken

How to design/plan a bigger software project?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 01:59 PM PDT

    Hey,

    I'm about to start a new project which will include a database(Postgres), a backend(node.js), a frontend(react) and an REST-API(.NET/C#).

Since this will be my first bigger project, I would like to ask you: how do you usually design everything (e.g. database structures, API routes, permissions etc.) beforehand? Which techniques do you use? Which software/tools can you recommend?

    Thanks!

How to get completely hide the x and y axis in chart.js

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 01:23 PM PDT

Does anyone know how to get rid of the x and y axis in chart.js? I don't mean the gridlines but the counters that go up the left on the x axis and the labels at the bottom of the y. I would also like to hide the border line that separates the counters/labels from the graph. I want to custom create those in CSS after.

    Thanks!

Is jQuery needed anymore in the current web development environment?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2018 12:51 PM PDT

When I was first learning some basics for web development a few years back I was told explicitly that JQuery was the best of the best and learning just JavaScript would be useless. Now there seems to be thousands of libraries that I can use instead and not have to touch it.

In your opinion, is jQuery still a good tool for a modern web developer?
