Try out a 200-player FPS project and then build your own multiplayer game with SpatialOS & Unity

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 09:07 AM PDT

    Hello there,

I'm Duco, a dev working on SpatialOS. I just wanted to let you know that today, following lots of feedback from devs, we launched our new Game Development Kit (GDK) for Unity. It helps you to quickly create, iterate and grow your multiplayer game. Early adopters have already described it as a huge improvement over our previous Unity integration, but I wanted to see what you thought.

To help with that, you can try out our open-source example FPS, which will give you out-of-the-box access to a 200-player experience and modify it for your own game idea. For questions or help, our developer community will welcome you on both our forums and our Discord server.

Finally, for those of you who will be coming to Los Angeles for the Unite event at the end of the month, we are holding a Happy Hour event. You will be able to talk with the technical and product leads behind the GDK, and see how it puts the multiplayer game that you have always wanted to build within your reach.

A question about game engine terminology

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 08:19 AM PDT

Hi there, I'm pretty new to game development and have been working on learning the basics using Unity and C#.

I'm working on making a first person game in Unity currently and I just have a curiosity about the lingo used in game development.

So Unity is a game engine, no argument there, but if I make a game, and code out, say, a first person action game in Unity. Let's say I make my own first person camera, enemy AI, combat system, etc.

Have I made a game engine inside Unity? The stuff I made, I can take and reuse in a sequel or another game. Essentially it's reusable code, so is that a simple game engine within a game engine or is that not the right terminology?

Sorry if this is a weird question, but learning all the terminology behind game development just got me thinking about this haha

Has anyone found success with playable demos on browsers?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 08:31 AM PDT

I'm considering creating and releasing a demo for a game I have in development (not a browser game) on a browser, but from what I've seen so far, there's not a lot of devs that go this route. Obviously, many games can't be ported to browser for any number of reasons, but for games that can be, and if you have the knowledge to do so, is it worth the extra effort?

Newb here. Is there an open source game (ideally point/click adventure) where I can just see what's involved in creating one?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 11:19 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I know almost nothing about programming and absolutely nothing about game design, but I always wanted to screw around with making a classic point and click Lucas Arts-style adventure. I also know nothing about art and animation so I was curious to see the number of graphics files needed to make a game of this type. I tried downloading one of the Adventure Game Studio games but that program compiles it and puts all the sprites into a separate file. I don't think i want to get involved with attempting to decompile or rip sprites at this point so I was wondering if there were any games, ideally point/click adventure, wherein I can look at the art assets in a way that it will make sense to a newb. Any ideas? Thanks!

Who are some game devs who are killing it on Twitter right now?

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 08:06 PM PDT

I just came across Wilhelm Nylund's Twitter feed and man, is he doing everything right. He's released a couple pretty successful games in a very specific genre (hilarious physics platforming/fighting mayhem) and never ceases to amaze with the prototypes and recordings he puts up. Every tweet is a home run.

Another great example that people around here are probably a little more familiar with is Der_Kevin, infamous for awesome skateboarding games and of course Last Man Sitting.

Who else is doing a great job marketing their stuff on Twitter? I want to add more to my feed!

    Should i start with Gamemaker?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 08:08 AM PDT

I've been messing round with Unity and generally found that I was struggling a lot, so was wondering how if I start with gamemaker how well do the skills translate to other engines (is it worth learning?)

Free music to use in your games!

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 12:15 AM PDT

    Hi everyone!

Now I'm not the best musician in the world, far from it, however a lot of people have used my music over the past 8 years in films, games and just about everything else! (It was also a pleasure to watch a stage version of Mort with it in!) :D I'm retiring from music myself at least for now due to becoming more and more insane! (https://youtu.be/1LcBbKLic0w)

Here is some free music you can use for pretty much any purpose you like!

    https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1N_YhqFnvr3sRz9Wp2be2XGcl_s8i6ibS

    Here's a license:

    https://www.chanwalrus.com/licensing

It's not the best music ever made and some of it sucks, especially the older stuff, but all of it you can use in anything completely free. All I ask is that you share it with the world and consider donating to my lousy sci fi series (or at least subscribing to it so I can feel happy!)

    Here's episode 1.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdTbKR5niFE

If you want to make me happy, please share my sci fi stuff with people who may enjoy it, on Social Media! :) But hey, if you're here for music, just take it and use it! :)

    Swarm behaviour in patterns

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 10:53 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Any ideas or links/resources on how pattern based swarming can be accomplished? The closest reference to what I'm looking for is this game called Atomus HD.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VdLIX7Df6Z0

I can do standard swarming behaviours (e.g seek, follow) in my tests but I wonder if there is a plugin that would serve me better or perhaps some "high-level" algorithm I can follow (e.g. Using paths).

    Appreciate the help!

The New Era of Uncensored Games on Steam: Developers Perspective

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 10:40 AM PDT

Yesterday I posted a thread on /r/Games which, to my surprise, was way more popular than I anticipated given its nature and generated a lot of good discussion about the topic.

Specifically, the topic is about: Steam and the new wave of adult oriented games that contain uncensored sexually explicit content.

A few takeaways that I got from there:

    • Niche market. Those games, while certainly experiencing a "renaissance" or sorts in the last couple of years, are still very much a niche. That is, even tough they are now on steam (implying more visibility) and have recently received a decent amount of media attention (such as House Party) the fact is that your average consumer of games might not be interested in those particular games at all.

    • Taboo topic. Sexuality and pornography are know to be contentious topics of discussion, but it is even more so when it comes to interactive media such as video games. One only needs to recall the controversy of Night Trap in the 90's (which was one of the catalysts for the creation of the ERSB) and the infamous GTA Hot Cofee Controversy in the 00's to be assured of the delicate nature of the matter when it comes to video games.

    • Store presence. One common concern is for the presence of NSFW games on steam's store page. The way Valve choose to handle such games is to use their tag system and hide those games behind certain tags such as "Sexual Content". Additionally, one can only see those games on the store by opting-in, that is, you'd have to enable the option to see mature content on the store, otherwise those games are effectively "invisible" to your average consumer.

    • Game library privacy. Some of steam's key features are how it shows what games your friends are playing at the moment, and the steam profile where you can see their game purchases and time played on games. This new wave of games reignited an old discussion about creating a new feature to enable private libraries on steam.

Since we got good feedback on that thread from the customers perspective, now I want to direct those questions to the game developer/publisher community: What are your particular opinions on this matter?

Do you agree/disagree with valves new approach when it comes to sexually explicit games? Do you believe this move by valve will affect the overall "store health/visibility" for indie game devs? Do you consider making adult oriented games a good venue for game development?

Wishlists after release, still increasing ?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 09:49 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

Just wondering how are the wishlists working this days, after release ? Last time I released a game, was in October 2016, and that´s almost like 100 years in game development behaviour :) At the time, I had around 3000 wishlists, and in the next 2 to 3 days it went up to 19k. Is the pattern still similar today ? Would love to hear from people that released recently.

    Thanks !

Space Fabricator -- Standalone or Unity Tool for generating beautiful, high-res space scenes

SteamVR Plug-in 2.0 for Unity.... Can someone explain how these actions work? Where can I find a list? Etc

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 05:36 AM PDT

    Sup r/gamedev,

I started a project like 2 weeks ago, literally days before SteamVR Plugin updated to their 2.0 overhauled input system.

This makes it VERY confusing when all the guides mention SteamVR_Controller... but that class, and that entire paradigm is gone. It is now actions and events or something.

So instead of sticking with the previous version just for the sake of "the tutorials use it"... I want to use the newest version because I believe it's a good methodology and a good direction for the Plugin.

But that being said... can someone explain how these actions work, how they interact with the Steam Bindings, and maybe a list of all possible actions? And, how can I get auto-complete working with them (if possible)?

    Thanks!!
