Do I really need HTTPS for my restaurant's basic website? Posted: 03 Sep 2018 11:33 AM PDT It only shows the menu, specials, location and opening hours. It has an admin interface which I use to enter the next day's specials the day before and look at some statistics I record. I decided not to bother with HTTPS because it's a very basic site, and a certificate costs money. Should I get one anyway, or would it be a waste? [link] [comments]
Are surge.sh apps in the free tier allowed to writing to the filesystem? Posted: 03 Sep 2018 03:43 PM PDT I searched in the surge documentation but couldn't find any information about whether apps in the free tier have write access to the filesystem, or how long does the data persists. Does anyone know what email service tinder uses for their help section? Posted: 03 Sep 2018 12:44 PM PDT Not sure where I'd put this so thought I'd ask it here. Sometimes when I send emails or chats using my gmail account I get a picture showing up next to my name (like profile picture). This happens on various websites, including the tinder help section (link below). For example, I recently message tinder help and I got an email that they received my message. In the email it shows my message and next to it a picture. It's a picture I associated with my gmail account a long time ago and have no idea where I uploaded it to. I really want it removed because it was a joke a while ago and not very professional. It's not my gmail/google+ profile picture. I think it's just some email service that some companies use. I was wondering if someone could help me figure out how to remove this photo from being associated at all with my gmail account. Here's the link to the tinder page: [link] [comments]

Looking for tips on how to conduct a job interview Posted: 03 Sep 2018 07:50 AM PDT Hi guys, Recently I found myself on the other side of the table: as a sole developer in our company, my boss decided it is time for me to turn my full attention to my side projects and hire a junior dev who will continue to work on the websites, help our admin staff with database queries and reports (and update database values because users are dumb and can't enter their own email, and create pages to evade this boring update process which I never had time to do), etc. Our projects are pretty wild, covering a lot of stuff as it is a system I designed (without too many solid ideas in the beginning) for the past three years. I mainly looking for someone who is ready to learn and don't afraid to ask for help. But I have no idea how to find out if the candidate is like this. However, I never did a job interview! I was on countless one, but all I remember about them is being miserable and having to answer extremely stupid questions to people who either don't know anything about coding or I got so cliched question that I think they didn't really tell them anything about my skill nor knowledge. I don't want to do a "normal" fill-this-stupid-form kind of test with the candidates (I hated that and I find it stupid to say the truth - if you can write a simple loop or something that doesn't mean you actually a good workforce). I would rather ask several questions about problem-solving to see how the poor candidate who has to work with me would react and is they have at least some skill. The job is mainly for the backend (a lot of data processing, and automation) with some front-end (mostly for our colleagues as for in-company sites) work. So far I only have some stupid question, like:
I would gladly accept any kind of help. I am the only developer here, so nobody can help me with the technical part of the interview. I would rather don't act like (all) of my previous interview conducting idiots (if this is possible). Thanks! [link] [comments]
Ideas for full stack web app challenges for web development training Posted: 03 Sep 2018 02:38 PM PDT Hey. I just finished my first full stack web app, using React and Firebase. I made a customer service web chat application and it was a lot of fun, really practical to learn the thinking behind how realtime app is structured. It was nice to be able to make use of Firebase for user authentication, database authorization and real time updates. Can anyone recommend some similar practical challenges, that is web apps that would be fun to practise web app design and coding? Recommendations, lists and links much appreciated. Cheers! Need-to-read books for Web dev and Javascript Posted: 03 Sep 2018 09:30 AM PDT Okay, so I'm going on deployment here pretty soon for about 8 months and as the title states I'm looking to pick up some books to stay on top of my development skills. I'm a beginner level and I'm hoping to come back state side obviously better and with a few projects to my name. What are some Web Development and JS books that are relatively modern (or have stood the test of time) that you found the most beneficial tom you that you couldn't live without. Thank y'all for your suggestions. [link] [comments]
Can you recommend a good guide on website security? Posted: 03 Sep 2018 02:27 PM PDT Hello! I'm pretty new in web dev and I've recently started a fairly extensive project. I want my website to be absolutely secure, especially since I store (hashed) passwords in a database. I want to make my site publicly available without any unnecessary security flaws. What I've done so far is I've configured my Apache server so nobody has access to a file I store my database logins etc in, I've disabled indexing and showing the server version etc. In a php script that lets users upload files, I've made sure only .csv files are allowed. In the php scripts which create accounts / handle logging in I've made sure I never store an unhashed password anywhere, and the inputs are escaped. All stored passwords are hashed. (I'll be looking into salt hashing later, don't know how it works in php) Next I'll be looking into XSS and making sure every user input is escaped, not only the password inputs. On top of these, what should I be doing? Can you recommend decent, in-depth guides or tutorials? [link] [comments]
Is an mta in networking goos for we. Developer Posted: 03 Sep 2018 02:10 PM PDT Hi guys my school is offering for me to take the MTA for networking for free . It's pretty hard so I'm considering paying 1.3k to take a three day class on it. My question is does any web developer have it and will it be useful in my career field? [link] [comments]
Wordpress vs Drupal vs Headless vs Squarespace for a large website Posted: 03 Sep 2018 10:25 AM PDT I run a large content based website, with around 1500 pages of content and 600k monthly visitors. We currently have a custom built SailsJS headless solution with an AngularJS frontend. We'd like to migrate it onto something more mainstream, to minimise the amount of dev work, and improve the admin section for editors. Simple things like adding JS tags involve using developers. We used to be on Drupal, but it became unwieldy. I don't think I want to go back there. Arguments in the office include Wordpress (I have no experience of it), some other form of headless solution e.g. Contentful (any experience here would be helpful), to SquareSpace, which is meant for small websites, but might work well for us if it's capable. Any suggestions for the best way to proceed would be much appreciated. [link] [comments]

Do you know a good framework/service where you can sell digital products that are frequently posted? Posted: 03 Sep 2018 04:02 PM PDT I see squarespace allows you to check out a digital product, but I don't know if it offers a good fee rate, and whether it allows you to offer videos of 20 mins or so. I am sure shopify does the same thing and many other sites. What I DON'T want is that the length product description section and the creator description. Because I would like to put products up very frequently maybe like a few posts a day, I don't need to write up details of video. [link] [comments]

How do you organize your API documentation? Posted: 03 Sep 2018 10:52 AM PDT Hi webdev. At work I've been implementing my employer's first set of publicly available REST APIs. They do what they're meant to, but I'm struggling really hard to set up a proper documentation. I'm using Swashbuckle to generate the Swagger documentation/UI, but I have a number of issues. One part is documenting the "flow of the API. There's a separate OAuth 2.0 server for fetching an access token via client_credentials. I need to document this, and I'm not sure where it's appropriate. I've modified the UI to accept a bearer token instead of username and password, as well as Swashbuckle a bit to inject an HTML document below the endpoints list. Here I amongst other things attempt to describe how you should fetch an access token. On top of this, I've set up a publicly available Confluence space, which contains more detailed descriptions of the functionality performed. Secondly, some of our API perform complex logic with an uncertain output. This is relevant to our users, and especially relevant in cases, where acting on a response is illegal. As an example, there's an endpoint that accepts a name and address to check whether a person is on a specific public list, which makes it illegal to send advertising material to their address. I would like to stress this point, but I'm not sure if it belongs in a general terms of agreement, or where it becomes best visible. Then, almost all endpoints rely on complex, uncertain logic, so it's not a REST API in the typical sense, where an entity/resource is listed with CRUD operations. It's rather functions that perform certain logic most often pertaining to data matching and then accessing public data sets. The problem I see here is that we've had to come up with names for everything ourselves, and the domain is often completely foreign to new customers, who previously had no idea that such functionality existed. The Confluence space I've created is for the purpose of having separate documents that explain the concepts, which can be sent to customers without tying them to this particular API, as we expose the functionality in our web app as well. This is probably not enough information to go on, but how do you organize such documentation? Are there practices and supplements to Swagger that I'm missing out on? [link] [comments]

Use Headless Wordpress to implement the entire API or just static content? Posted: 03 Sep 2018 02:34 PM PDT Let's say that I'm building an apartment rental site. Users can register and submit their apartments. The client also wants to be able to change content on the static pages. Headless Wordpress seems like a good choice for CMS. The Wordpress Admin is great, free of charge, and many people already know how to use it. But what about the rest of the API and database? Do you guys implement that too in Wordpress? I mean, I would rather put dynamic content from the users into Firebase or another CMS like Django. But then I the client would actually need to run two different CMS for the site to work. Is there a way to clone a site & then integrate and edit in wordpress? Posted: 03 Sep 2018 02:05 PM PDT I love the structure and flow of this one site. I managed to clone it, but wordpress is the ONLY thing I manage to use when it comes to editing. Is there any way to clone this php/non wordpress site, integrate it into wordpress, and edit and maintain it there? [link] [comments]
Can an IFRAME be allowed to scroll the window? Posted: 03 Sep 2018 02:04 PM PDT My company produces a component which is embedded in customer sites as a cross-origin iframe. We use davidjbradshaw's iframe resizer to make it fit nicely in the customer's page. However there is a circumstance where the iframe goes from being very tall to being very short. If the user had scrolled to the bottom of the iframe, it then effectively disappears off the top of the page and the user is left looking at the surrounding page's footer. I know this is about to happen, so I do a window.scrollTo(0,0), which is ignored, presumably because the iframe is untrusted. Is there something I can get done in the containing page to allow the scrolling to work? Or is there some other smart solution I haven't thought of? Thank you! [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Sep 2018 07:38 AM PDT As a web developer who has been around a few newer and older frameworks, it seems to me that devs are just building APIs to consume in our JavaScript front end frameworks. I love using rails and I don't see any problems using the typical MVC pattern built into rails and other frameworks. However due to the high demand of phone apps and multiple clients per product, how much sense does it make to not make an API for a web product? Do we make APIs along with a full MVC web application? Thoughts? [link] [comments]
