What technologies to use in 2018 to build static websites with easy CMS for small clients like barbershops, sport clubs, etc?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 04:46 AM PDT

What would you guys use in 2018 to build a static website with an easy-to-use CMS behind it? I've looked into Jekyll and Siteleaf CMS, but I have no idea about either of them. I want to be able to make use of CSS Grids and maybe ReactJS, but first of all, what would YOU guys use, apart from my wishes?

Really interested in hearing your experiences.

After 4-5 months of learning web development, I deployed my first web app!

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:57 AM PDT

I have been learning web development for the previous 4-5 months and I have finally deployed my first web app, Orbittle, it's basically a platform where you can create new posts and comments. You are also able to sign up for a new user, edit comments and posts. It's not the prettiest thing in the world, it still needs a lot of work design-wise. I haven't really tested the website on a lot of devices, but it's safe to assume I will be needing more media queries.

    Technologies used:

    • Node
    • Express
    • MongoDB
    • Passport

It has been really hard making this app for one simple reason, I was taking care of all design and code. Yes, it's not that pretty design-wise, but with all the things going on in the back-end, I really just wanted a functional design, be it bad or not. Please check out the website and tell me what you think!

You can find the website here: https://orbittle.herokuapp.com/

What helped you grow the most as a developer?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:04 PM PDT

Being self-taught, there are huge gaps in what I know (and I'm definitely feeling incompetent next to pros!) I love coding, and have a background in design/visual communication as is, but would like to present myself more professionally. The goal would be to score a junior frontend or UI/UX position, or continue rolling the ball with my client base.

What should be next on my agenda, bootcamp? CS degree? Launch an ambitious project? Intern at a company? What helped you grow the most as a developer, particularly in the early stages?

Sprite sheets - is it still a thing?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 12:57 PM PDT

I was working on a project and collaborated with an older dev who used sprite sheets. I have never encountered sprite sheets before but everything I could find about them is five years old articles. We had a simple static website that had 6 icons with a text and it seemed really unnecessary as the load difference can't be that noticeable. But maybe I am wrong. Can someone enlighten me and explain if it's still a viable approach?

Help with auto resizing iframe height

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 11:40 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm new to programming and I've been playing around an iframe from an external website (not sure if I can link?) which provides you with live football (soccer for some of you) scores. I've entered the html code and the width is responsive however the height is automatically cut off at 500px. I can set scrolling to yes but that's not the effect i'd like it to have. Is there anything I can do to make this automatically re-size based on how many games are currently on?

    Cheers,

    Which Backend Language/Framework in 2018?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 05:12 PM PDT

If you were to go about learning a backend language and accompanying framework to create your own APIs, CMS, communicate with databases, etc. for personal and professional web projects of varying sizes and scales, what would you choose today? For the sake of the question, forget the obvious qualifiers such as previous experience and familiarity with various ecosystems. Just curious to hear what you all feel are the most relevant and practical backend frameworks moving forward. Hope it's not too much of a vague question.

Something happened to one of my site's Google indexing and I don't know how to fix it

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 04:44 PM PDT

This is how my site is listed right now:

    https://i.imgur.com/Wapfnl5.png

I used to host this site out of a subdirectoy of another domain. Something like example.com/site. Google indexing was fine when I hosted it like that. It had a description and a title and everything else a Google listing usually has.

Recently I purchased a domain for it and setup a 301 redirect on the old link to point to the new domain.

It's been over a week now and not only has my site lost it's ranking from the 1st page results to the 3rd and now 4th when Googling "Zulrah Helper", now it has no title or description.

This is a VueJS application. I've read some things about SPAs and SEO but it doesn't make sense that it just started happening now.

I'm also in the process of launching another application I've developed in Vue, but now I'm kind of discouraged due to this...

    Any advice?

LPT: If you're using windows and WSL, add an exception in windows defender to your linux dist or your website's folder, it will speed things up like composer 10 fold.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 10:39 AM PDT

Windows currently has an I/O issue on WSL, where defender scans all files when installing... This may speed up for native windows too (add your website folder) and give it a try

    Resources for UI

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 04:05 AM PDT

Hello, as someone coming from a background with backend experience more than frontend, is there any good books for getting a solid foundation in web design?

I don't mean CSS grids and flexbox; I want to know if there's a good way to learn how to make UI elements not look absolutely horrendous without using the CSS frameworks like Material, Bootstrap, and Angular, because I feel that without those frameworks, the sites I design look horrendous.

I know this might be a debate of art vs science to some, but I'm a firm believer that a good guide will give me strong foundations faster than banging my head against the wall. Experience helps, but shortcuts exists too. Any tips would help. Thanks!

What is a cheap/free hosting site that I could use and what should I use for a CMS w/ a blogging function?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:27 PM PDT

So my college classes now require us (and is now part of our grade) to maintain a blog, do extended outside of class learning, go to tech meet ups, etc. So I was thinking for part of my points to just finally create a personal website with a blog, and just tag blogs accordingly to each need (obviously). I know I'll just be a domain through Google Domains. But I need a cheap/free web hosting platform that I can use a CMS in. Any ideas?

Most customizable way to build a site?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:12 PM PDT

Hey everyone. I'm trying to build a blog/forum type of website. So far I have hosting for the website and started building it through wordpress but I noticed that there is not much customizability. I don't want to code if I don't have to but I'm not trying to make a basic, drag and drop Wix site. I used to make websites in microsoft word where I could create my own squares/ text so that's kinda what I'm going for. My goals are simplicity and customizability, what's my best option?

What is the best plugin to make custom drag and drop templates in Wordpress?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:06 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Currently I am making custom Wordpress sites for some clients. Most of them want to be able to easily add elements to their web pages.

Right now I am using Advanced Custom Fields Pro to achieve this but it doesn't seem to be very user friendly.

Is there something similar to ACF with a better UX? Perhaps a plugin where I can create elements that clients then can drag and drop with an easy interface?

Would love to hear your opinions and ideas.

If a client insists on using a popup, what are some best practices to minimize the negatives people typically complain about?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 07:05 AM PDT

I know a lot of people preach about the downsides of popups modals and how they make them never want to visit that site again, but they're seen as an effective, necessary evil, for growing things like a newsletter mailing list.

With that out of the way, are there any best practices you can use to minimize user-annoyance?

Obviously, the popup modal should be easy to dismiss but just how frequently should it be shown to users? Not more than once a day, once a week, once every 2 weeks?

Also is simply storing a timestamp using localStorage that checks when a user last saw the popup modal a good method of ensuring a popup modal isn't over-served?

    Mobile Design Best Practices

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:35 PM PDT

I'm learning all things we've design by myself and I would like to know the way everyone handles mobile design.

The way I have been doing it is just manipulating my elements to be smaller on smaller screens and to make things stack and such.

I have thought of doubling my html and having half made for desktop and the other half for mobile, but that seems like a lot of code to pass to the user.

How do you guys handle it and bonus question: which size do you design for first?

Where to store your encryption keys?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 10:31 AM PDT

I am building a backend that dynamically generates Cryptocurrency private keys such that users can send to the corresponding address. I'm thinking of storing those private keys in a database, but of course I need to encrypt them first, maybe using AES256?

My question is where to store that AES256 key. As environment variable so it won't appear anywhere in the code, right? But how can I be sure that no one can access my key, if I'm using cloud hosting service then, let's say, Amazon theoretically could know my AES256key... am I being over paranoid? Or is there a better way to do this?

Can anyone tell me if this UI operation has a name? It is when you deactivate a portion of a UI (in this case the search box) by clicking on a "dead" portion of the UI.

    Creating a custom payment gateway

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 01:56 PM PDT

Hello. I'm an apprentice at a small Web Development company and I have an upcoming task to make a custom payment gateway.

    • It is going to be made out of PHP.
    • Obviously, it needs to be secure.
    • Takes in an invoice number and uses this to gather price based on what's pulled from the Database.

    What is it?

It is pretty much an online form that a customer will fill out with their details, and their invoice number that they have already been given prior to this form. I've not yet been told if it is going to be PayPal or Bank payments.

I know how to do the visual side, as in html, of it just the behind the scenes stuff.

    My Main Questions.

    1. What do I need to know to do this?
    2. Is this actually fairly easy and I am just over complicating it?
    3. Am I way over my head?

Edit: The payment is a onetime thing so no reoccurring payments.

    Services people pay for.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 06:01 AM PDT

I saw a post on here about freelance and protecting your work so I guess this can fall under webdev as well.

What are services that people usually pay for that requires a webdev in the freelance market?

I've been messing with full stack development for a while because it interest me, but since I'm mostly self taught I get imposter syndrome and can't think any body could have work for the skill sets that I have, which is being comfortable with server side like database and Apache/nginx and ifferent frameworks for getting the job done. I mostly dislike the graphical side of things, I guess frontend. Are themes commonly relied upon? That feeds back into my imposter syndrome if I just use other pieces and put them together.

    Thanks for any replies.
