I just bought a domain from Namecheap and suddenly I'm inundated with IT/UX/Logo/Web Design solicitation emails from India and the like.

    Posted: 16 Jul 2018 03:38 AM PDT

This is like the second domain I'm buying ever and it's mostly for shits and giggles since I have no experience with web design or development.

As per the title, as soon as I signed up for the domain with Namecheap I started getting spam in my gmail inbox (not getting caught by the spam filter) from agencies seeking to provide their services to me.

Anyone had a similar experience? Do you think I can report this as a GDPR violation?

Edit: Small update. As stated by Namecheap support my personal data is not available on https://whois.icann.org but after searching for my domain on google, I found that https://www.whoxy.com lists all the info I gave Namecheap when buying the domain.

If my password is emailed to me in plain text, does that mean it's not encrypted in the database?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2018 02:07 AM PDT

If a password (upon creating an account) is emailed to me directly, in plain text, does that in turn mean it's also not encrypted in the database? Or would those technically be possible to be two different things?

What if I did a 'lost password' and it sends my password in plain text as well?

Ways to speed up HTML&CSS development?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2018 09:59 AM PDT

I love front-end development. I love designing mockups in Adobe XD. It's fun.

What was fun to me though, which was coding my designs to HTML&CSS is now a chore. Actually the thought of doing it every other day for a new client just depresses me.

I guess I can personally take steps to make this process easier by saving snippets of code, but it's still a chore and not every website is the same.

How does everyone else do it without getting so depressed? Is there some sort of modern day drag and drop html+css application that can make getting pages built faster? + If it supports Sass.

A few years ago I use to think that anyone use such tools aren't actual web designers and are very lazy but nowadays I hate "coding from scratch"... it takes so much time and with having several new clients a month it's mental torture. Please help.

I'm alright with writing codes but I'm terrible in designing.

    Posted: 16 Jul 2018 03:01 PM PDT

I can build a website fairly easy if someone made a design for me but I also make website for friends and family without a webdesigner.

I'm really bad at designing a website is there a website/video/course which can help me improve ? It can takes hours for me just to choose a colour set.

Also do you have tips and tricks for me ?

What do you think are the best places to live and work as a web dev?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2018 04:10 AM PDT

I'll be looking for a new web dev job in about a month or so and I wanted to know what you all thought were the best cities to work in as far as cost of living and quality of life. I lived in Salt Lake between 2016-2018 but wasn't a huge fan of the place, despite how much it's been trending. I moved home to the NYC area and was thinking about working in Brooklyn, but am open to relocating again to a city where my salary can go a long way. I've been told I can make good money in NYC, but having lived here all my life 100k here is different than 100k in a place like Raleigh, NC.

So I'm curious, where do you think is the best place to work and live as a web developer in the country right now? Any places up and coming (aside from Salt Lake)?

Must the Impressum (or Imprint) page on German websites be linked on every single page?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2018 01:45 PM PDT

I know this is getting rather specific, but I;m an American designing a site for a German company. Should I account for an Imprssum link on every single page, or can I have an initial splash page that doesn't directly link there?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I look forward to reading your replies!

How do you handle WHOIS lookups in a post GDPR world?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2018 01:12 PM PDT

I frequently work with businesses who don't remember who setup their website, or who possesses their domain. Even some of my own domains are spread around 4 different registrars. WHOIS was surprisingly a big part of tracking those down.

As a fan of privacy I was happy to see Privacy Protection on domains now as standard, but am still mourning the loss of WHOIS. Are there any comparable ways to get this info? What do you do if you need to track down a domain's owner?

Anyone interested in freelance tech writing?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2018 03:23 PM PDT

I am trying to hire a team of freelancers to build consistent content for our tech company. Do you know how hard a good tech writer is to find? It's not easy.

We are an deployment and infrastructure automation company similar to Heroku, but can be run on any cloud provider. Our biggest challenge is creating quality content that can disrupt the content ecosystem Heroku has created.

If you are interested in picking up some freelance work and can speak knowledgeably to developers please DM me. Or if you can suggest some sources to go to to track down great tech writers, that would be very appreciated.

How is this website redirecting whenever I open up dev tools?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2018 02:13 PM PDT

I was having buffering issues watching something on www.gomovieshub.se, so I opened up Chrome's dev tools to check the network. The moment I did, some debugger statement in one of the scripts paused the JavaScript execution, and the website redirected to the main page. The debugger statement seems to originate from a Blowfish-obfuscated script tag in the HTML. I tried deactivating all breakpoints, but the website still redirected when dev tools were open. Try visiting the site for yourselves, this behavior seems to occur for every page in the website, including the main page itself.

What is going on? Is this website deliberately trying to lock people out of using element inspection on their website? If so, how can it be circumvented?

    Countdown for Front-End development automation?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2018 01:31 PM PDT

I'm looking into becoming a front end developer.

Upon my search I've recently found webtools like Webflow.

Devs say it's no match for their job right now because it lacks customizable options on a site but I would assume within the next five years, with updates, something like it could overthrow the industry structure?

How long until a front end developers job is 20% automated or 50% automated or even 100% automated and all that will be needed are designers?

Any JS plugin/library for creating scattered images gallery ?

    Posted: 16 Jul 2018 01:10 PM PDT

Hello guys. Is there any easy to setup JS/Jquery plugin for making scattered images gallery. Something similar to this ? The Github repo doesn't explain the usage so I am guessing I need to manually go inside every file and make the necessary changes. This is very difficult for me, so I was looking for a easy to use plugin for creating similar effect.

    Thanks.

Where to host multiple small projects (Web, Node, PHP)

    Posted: 16 Jul 2018 12:59 PM PDT

    Hey,

I have plenty of small projects that I host on my private Ubuntu server with NGINX. I create a new directory and configure anything manually. For several reasons, I don't wanna run my own server any more and I want to go to the cloud. My projects are mostly really small and need really few resources.

I've used Azure and it's nice to use (free trial) but the price is too high. For hosting one project, it costs me around $10 per month. I have around 30 different projects, some of them just web apps (html/css + js), most of them Node.js apps and few PHP apps. So, I'd pay around $ 300 if I create 30 different Azure projects.

Is there another way for my issue? Is there a way on a cloud server to have e.g. one managed server where you can add multiple projects which share the resources, and I don't have to administrate anything?

Maybe it's an easy solution and I just make it complicated in my mind. I guess many people want to host small projects without administrating a whole server and so there has to be a solution for this.

    Thanks :)
