I spent 5 hours making this website (HTML & CSS) and I feel it took me too much time, considering the simplicity of it. What do you think?

Self taught full stack developer resume - critique wanted

    Posted: 14 Jul 2018 04:25 AM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/3jwYJQC

Currently about to start looking for a junior web dev position.

Showed it to my friend who works at a top tech company and he thought it lacked personality because of the bland design. What do you guys think? Should I add more flavor (colors, borders, etc)?

Edit: meanwhile my friend's friend who he referred me to and is an actual senior web dev really liked my resume style, so....idk?

Is there any reason to chose Apache over NGINX?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2018 01:58 PM PDT

NGINX seems to have so many advantages over Apache, and no downsides that I know of, is there any rational reason to chose Apache I'm overlooking?

NGINX was created to handle problems Apache struggled in, and does that well.

It can handle far more concurrent server calls without consuming more resources, and is faster under heavy loads. So why do people still use Apache?

This is a simple JS setTimeout function, it helps gamers see how much of a disadvantage their ping is putting them at, I've seen a lot of comments arguing that it's not an accurate representation, but I haven't seen anything that's better for the same purpose.

Best visual page builder for developers?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2018 06:50 AM PDT

There are so many visual page builders out there for people wanting to build their own websites with no coding, and many of them can do some amazing things. In just a few minutes' work, anybody can put together a decent looking website layout, and type in some content and links, with no coding skill.

As a developer, though, I find that most of the builders I've seen suffer from similar issues: overly complex html/css output, page bloat and slowness, vendor lock in, and decision fatigue.

I would love to find a builder that allowed me to quickly drag and drop my way to some decent looking layouts, and then download some very clean HTML, CSS, and JS code that I will be happy to extend and maintain. Sort of a semi-minimalist compromise between a visual page builder and pure hand written code.

Surely I'm not the first person with this wish, and maybe some tools like this already exist?

You have to agree the visual effects are pretty amazing but I can't figure out how it's done exactly.

    A free one-page website builder I created

    Posted: 14 Jul 2018 08:18 AM PDT

For showoff saturday I'd like to feature A1Pager, a free one-page website builder I launched this week.

It uses a simple web form in order to create a site, there is no drag and drop interface or programming/design knowledge required. You can build a responsive website within 10 minutes.

    The website is https://a1pager.com

    Thanks for checking it out

    Anyone here a 'UX Developer?'

    Posted: 14 Jul 2018 01:53 PM PDT

I specifically mean 'UX developer' and not 'UX designer.'

What relationship does the UX developer have to the UX designer? Does the designer simply create wireframes or a mockup in Adobe for the UX developer to then mimic in development?

How is an UX developer any different from a 'front-end' developer? It seems both positions utilize the same set of skills (JS/CSS/HTML, etc.).

What kind of questions are asked in a UX developer interview?

Is there any up-to-date tutorial on auth stuff like storing usernames and password hashes?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2018 09:28 AM PDT

Maybe it goes through which hash is the best to use in 2018, should we "salt" the passwords, etc. Really rusty on this stuff so I was wondering if there's any sort of nice tutorial that goes through auth stuff. Thanks!

I'm going to get fired in a month.

    Posted: 13 Jul 2018 05:23 PM PDT

Unless I stop underperforming at work. It's pretty logical when you think about it. The junior front end dev they hired takes too long to lay the markup, style it, make it responsive, and add all those fancy animations and scripts. I wanted to be good at this and I'm slowly getting better, but I'm just too slow. This is the first real programming gig that I got. And now I'm getting fired after a month. I can't believe that I might dissapoint my loved ones. I need a plan, a way to help me speed up my output. I'm writing this to help me think. . . A project usually starts with a photoshop file. I then need to extract resources from it. Lay the markup, do and redo the styling based on the specs of the file given to me (it has to be pixel perfect) add some scipts for the moving parts, compress every asset used and submit to be evaluated. This takes a week. My co workers can do it in a day. I dont know how they do it. I know my css is not top teir and the planning of my markup needs work too but there has to be a way for me to improve or else. Btw getting fired is pretty bad but Its not the end of the world for me.

Will an online-only CS degree(specifically WGU) be enough to get past HR/be worth it in this industry?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2018 02:57 PM PDT

    Hello /r/webdev!

I'm a long time lurker and read through threads quite a lot in this sub.

I've been researching this particular school for a few days now, and am on board with the concept.
For those who don't know, WGU is a regionally accredited, non-profit institution that offers affordable online bachelors degrees. They have a fixed price model, meaning I could complete my degree in 2-3 years if I study hard enough, with no extra cost.

That's the gist of it, and I love the concept. The downsides are, the degree may not be viewed as seriously as the traditional 4-year route by some employers. However, I'm primarily self taught and self-employed. My main concern is getting past the 'HR firewall', and having them look at my self employed experience and personal projects rather, with my degree being a way to get the interview.

It's important to note that it's a non-profit, meaning it holds more weight then something like Devry(for-profit school).

Is a path like this even worth the effort or should I just spend the next 1-2 years rigorously self teaching myself then trying for a junior position? I currently work around 20hr/week average as a freelancer(looking to increase that). Going the traditional route is simply too expensive and would make my freelancing goals very difficult.

    Here's their program: https://washington.wgu.edu/online-it-degrees/computer-science

Any thoughts from hiring managers and devs alike would be greatly appreciated.

TL;DR: I want to pursue an accredited online B.S CS at WGU, wondering if it's good enough to get past the 'HR firewall' when paired with personal projects and 2+ years of self-employed experience. Would I be better off just continuing down my self-learning path?

What's your development machine spec? How much RAM do you have? Is 4GB enough?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2018 01:23 PM PDT

So my laptop's on the brink of death and I need a new one, or a desktop maybe since they're cheaper. Money's tight so I'm looking at some 4GB options -- is this enough for development work, including running virtual machines? Or should I shell out for 8GB?

Generally, what's the spec of the machine you use for development work and how does it hold up to what you need to do?

Should I be worried about no IPv6 through Wordpress?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2018 01:19 PM PDT

We are about to redesign/redeploy a better version of our website. Old version of the site is domain-registered through Godaddy, hosted on AWS, and running on Wordpress. Should I be looking into alternatives to Wordpress, or not be worried, or will they someday support IPv6?

Or...am I mistaken and this actually relies only on our hosting by AWS?
