An illustration of web development tools in 2018 Posted: 04 Jan 2018 03:33 PM PST Hey People, I made these charts showing the path to become a web developer in 2017 and it seemed to have helped a lot of peopled and gained a lot of traction. 2018 has begun and without further ado, I have updated it to match what its like in 2018 – feel free to have a look at https://github.com/kamranahmedse/developer-roadmap/blob/master/README.md if it may help anyone :) [link] [comments] |
What is the best way and the best resources to learn Python? Posted: 04 Jan 2018 05:44 AM PST I have some basic knowledge in Python but I would like to advance it. [link] [comments] |
My goal for 2018 is to learn Python. My progress so far. Posted: 04 Jan 2018 07:48 PM PST I've been studying Python using the online resource "How to Think Like a Computer Scientist" during my down time at work. As you can see from the picture linked above, I have completed four chapters so far. The sense of pride and accomplishment from writing scripts from scratch and having turtles move around is pretty great! What an exciting journey! I see a lot of advice saying that beginners should have a project to work on but I don't think I have enough knowledge to build anything particularly useful. Maybe in a few weeks I'll have some ideas pop up! Anyway, thanks for listening to my happy update! Cheers! [link] [comments] |
[Python] How to pronounce % symbol? Posted: 04 Jan 2018 09:24 PM PST Just beginning and I don't know if I should call the % symbol "percent" when I'm saying things aloud to myself or if there is another term for the symbol. I'm an auditory learner and being self-taught, I don't want to sound stupid at job interviews in the forever future when I talk about things and don't know the correct terminology or pronunciation. If this is the wrong place to ask, sorry! [link] [comments] |
Thanks to you guys, i was able to finish my first Python-Webapp! Posted: 04 Jan 2018 11:07 PM PST Four months ago, i began coding a little Webapp in order to learn about webdevelopment and python. You beautiful people of /learnprogramming helped me a lot! Here's the finished site: http://howfarismars.de/ Its in german, but i would love to hear you feedback. Thanks again, /learnprogramming ! What's a 'Session' in terms of logging into websites using a script? Posted: 04 Jan 2018 11:05 PM PST I've been trying to make a start on a project, but it's been so long since I've properly programmed anything that my brain has basically forgotten most of the important stuff. I'm trying to research how to do each part individually but the first part requires logging into a website and grabbing the source code that appears only for people with an account. I'm using Python 3.6 for this, and from the look of things, you just need to use the requests module and post your details into the HTML form. But I've seen this term cropping up, and I want to double check I'm understanding this right. If I'm requesting a session, is that analogous of me using a library computer for an hour, and then the computer logging me out when my time's up? It's really difficult trying to get back into things without watching through an entire playlist on Udemy again, so Stack Overflow isn't helping much since I don't understand many scripts people post on there, Thanks in advance guys! Question for Beginners: What do you feel you struggle most with learning programming? Posted: 04 Jan 2018 09:51 PM PST Question for those learning to program. What do you feel is the biggest struggle you have with learning? Aside from "coding is hard". Is there another reason that has prevented you from continuing through a book or course? Or something in particular that has just been a huge brick wall in your learning progress? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jan 2018 06:47 PM PST I'm 36 and im trying to change careers ASAP, and I started learning to code in December. Started off learning a bit of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, SQL, and Python. Pretty much everyone says if you're not sure which language to learn first, go with Python. I like Python just fine and I'm working through some intermediate-level courses on Udacity, but today it hit me: If most jobs want experience with JS, C++, Java, or C#, why am I learning Python? There are Python jobs out there for sure, but I see a lot more demand for the other languages I mentioned. I'm wondering if I should put Python on the back burner for now and focus all my effort on one of the other languages...? [link] [comments] |
csv file for foods of specific medical diets? Posted: 04 Jan 2018 08:24 PM PST my wife is going through some tough times medically and she is being put on several diets each for a possible different condition that she might have. They all have very specific foods she can eat and not eat. Being new to programming I thought I could put all the foods into three different arrays and then if you searched for something it could tell you if it was in one two or all three of her diets (ie green light to eat). but I was wondering if I could find a csv file for each of the diets? does anyone know if things like that exist or would I have to make it myself? LATEX: file compiles, file with same code doesnt compile? Posted: 04 Jan 2018 08:24 PM PST I have a question regarding laTex. I have a file that has: This generates an error saying: But I copy and pasted it in from another file that has the same code and that file compiles without error? What is the problem here? If you're interested in learning, please pm me or respond here. You would need an internet connection strong enough to get a decent stream so I could screenshare with you. Microphone may not be required on your part, still working out that deet. For discussions and tutoring sessions, we will be using discord. Please note that actual sessions likely won't start until late January or first of February. This should end somewhere in Late April to mid May. It's okay if it goes long, as there is still value if it takes longer. If you wish to sign up to learn PHP in a constructive, group environment, please fill out this survey! This is the final reddit post I will be making on these sessions - the next time this sub hears from me will be an action report! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Jan 2018 04:59 PM PST Hey folks, I am developing my own app. I posted the application in another subreddit and people pointed out that hard-coded strings are not good practice. What are some ways to mitigate this issue? I could use a parameter file. One thing I did was create a new class with all the hard-coded strings. Here is the application: Alliance App [link] [comments] |
Question about how page redirect works Posted: 04 Jan 2018 10:55 PM PST Really noob question that I was curious about When you visit any NSFW subreddit for the first time it asks you if you are 18 and want to proceed. What is going on between you entering the url, it redirecting you to the 18+ confirmation site, and then proceeding to the actual subreddit? Is it just saving whether or not you have visited an nsfw sub through cookies or something and then doing some redirects? What exactly is going on there? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jan 2018 10:42 PM PST The main thing I cannot figure out is which language/program do I use to create the timer/enter password notification. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jan 2018 10:42 PM PST The issue I have with xamarin is even though I can write most of the code in .NET on windows I can not debug the android portion without using an emulator and IMO it takes way to long to execute (if it takes more than 10seconds for hello world it's too long). I would use HTML/JS but the speed is pretty slow. Node is not slow because I can take advantage of native libraries but I'm unsure how to execute node.js as an app. Do I have any other options? A quick google shows swift has a good crypto library but it also appears like it doesn't include windows (https://github.com/krzyzanowskim/CryptoSwift). Would I have a decent development environment on windows? Or linux? Also I'm worried it might be a struggle to find a Curve25519 or rsa implementation on swift. [link] [comments] |

C++ Text Adventure Border Help Posted: 04 Jan 2018 06:27 PM PST I have started making a c++ text adventure game as practice while I am learning the language and have got some of the basic framework down. However, I want to create a border for the text to be held in and don't know how to continue with this, if anyone could show me some pseudocode for how to create this or direct me towards a page which explains this topic, that would be very helpful. Thanks. Edit: this game is console-based. [link] [comments] |
How do I make an AutoHotKey script that kills a loop instantly? Posted: 04 Jan 2018 10:08 PM PST Here's my script (its a script to infinitely hit right arrow) numpad6:: loop send, {right} return Now currently the only way to stop this script is to close it in my app tray. I have tried the following script: numpad6:: loop send, {right} return esc::exitapp And the ExitApp does nothing. The script just keeps on running forever and forever. I feel like my goal is extremely simple but I've been sitting here for 2+ hours trying to figure this out and for the life of me cannot figure it out. Essentially all I want is a toggle that I can use to turn on/off an infinite right arrow key function. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Jan 2018 10:06 PM PST For example, I have: String header = "header" String body = "body" String footer = "footer" My goal is to have these 3 variables in 1 String but with a separator to keep track and know which section is the header, the body and footer. Is their an ideal way to handle this without using something like HTML tags surrounding each string (like start_header, end_header, etc)? EDIT 1: It's similar to this leet code question https://leetcode.com/problems/encode-and-decode-strings/description/ but the key difference being, after encoding, the string size can change making the decoded result different. Seeking a user friendly API to build an app Posted: 04 Jan 2018 09:44 PM PST BACKGROUND: beginner/intermediate CS student looking to get experience using git and building a basic app on for a site like last.fm, imdb, goodreads, librarything, etc. (social media sites where users log their consumption of media and find out about similar artists and users with similar tastes) I had big plans for building an app using the goodreads.com API but after reading the developer forums there, discovered that the public API is an afterthought and poorly maintained. My original idea was to implement functionality that my old favorite site librarything had, but that goodreads lacked, like seeing which users have similar tastes. So, could someone please recommend me a site, like the ones mentioned, with a well maintained API that would be good for a beginner app? TYIA [link] [comments] |
I need help making a menstrual cycle app Posted: 04 Jan 2018 09:35 PM PST I finished code academy Java and python and just downloaded Android studio. I want to make a mentrual cycle app as my first real project. I started Android studio and feel as if I hadn't learned a single thing at all. What additional resources or commands should I look up and research to further my menstrual cycle app? I basically want to have a graphical calendar that shows days which you will be on your menstrual cycle after you input your first and last day of period. [link] [comments] |

Best ways to fill in my holes as a self taught developer? Posted: 04 Jan 2018 05:45 PM PST I self taught myself C, and have found out, through a series of really rough interviews, that I suck. I have a job developing on embedded systems using C, I know I can do it. The issues seem to be twofold. I never learned the random factoids of C that I never ran into. For example C has an inline keyword that does stuff (found that one out in an interview...ouch). Similar stupid things like that, which looking back make me look like a fool, but the reality is just I never ran into it in my day to day work, so when I get asked about it I'm fucked and look like an idiot. Same goes for algorithms too...ugh I hate life. Help? [link] [comments] |
