    Overwhelmed with all of it

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:52 PM PST

Hi Reddit, I'm currently in my second year of university, entering into my second semester and it's really occurring to me just how woefully underskilled I am. I only just finished a data structure and algorithms class, in java no less, last semester and it feels like everything I know and will learn is only just scratching the surface. That class has literally been the only 'programming' experience that I've had and even that was really hard for me.

I don't know where to start or which aspect of computer science I want to work in. I know it's late to find a job or internship for the summer but what can I do or where can I go to learn about the different careers in computer science during my time so that I can try things and not waste my time.

I understand that I can't ever learn everything in a particular line of work and that real world experience is likely my best bet but I just feel so overwhelmed with all of the different lines of work and number of courses online and I just want to know where to start.

Recommendations for online BS in CS?

I've been working full time as a furniture mover for the past 2 years, and I'd really like to pursue a career that doesn't involve destroying my body by the time I'm 50. Plus, I'd like to make enough to live financially well, raise a family, and do something in a field that I'd imagine I like. I found this post from 2016 to be insightful.

Total Noobie -- what's the difference between a compiler and the actual thing you download at the end? How do you go from one to the other?

3-Dimensional, Particle-Based Fluid Simulation; How to Handle Efficient Collisions?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 10:58 AM PST

copied from r/Physics which has yet to produce results

"I'm starting research work for a fluid simulator that handles: -multiple material types -composite formation -variable viscosity, allowing formation of solids

The only bit I'm sticking on is how exactly to handle particle repulsion/attraction with some degree of efficiency.

It doesn't need to run live by any means; it's just being represented as data, not visually.

So far I'm thinking some sort of magnetic-ish gradient based on the material node it surrounds, but that's about as far as I've gotten.

    Literally any input helps~

EDIT: it is important to note that this does not need to be realistic, only convincing and effective"
