Posted: 31 Dec 2021 09:52 AM PST Are you coding right now? Great! Let me tell you my story. 2017 - I was cleaning hotel rooms for a living. Rock bottom right? but a wise man told me when you are at the bottom there is nowhere else to go but up. Right before Christmas 2020 I got work from home job as a call center agent. First week in, I know that this is not going to work out and I made a decision to learn web development in 2021. January 1 2021 I woke up at 6am to study for a bit then go to work. In between calls I would open up VSCode. After work I still study until 9pm. After 6 months I have a portfolio ready. June 2021 I started applying for web dev jobs. A month passed by and no one was responding. At this point I started to personally message CEO's to give me a chance. July 2021 I got a response from a CEO and would like to schedule an interview. I was horrible at the interview, most of the questions I answered I don't know, still after that they gave me a paid take home exercise. Told myself this is it, this will be my best take home exercise. After I submitted, they told me they would get back to me in a week or two. A week passed by and they asked for my bank details. I blew it. The next day I got my compensation for the exercise and moved on. I got a couple of interviews and take home exercises lined up. End of July 2021, I received a full time offer from same company, it turns out I did enough to impress the CTO. I started August 2021 and now 5months in as a junior developer. Dont! Never give up! Got an internship at Goldman Sachs Posted: 31 Dec 2021 03:46 AM PST Hey all, hope you all are doing extremely well! I used to be on this subreddit a lot and a lot of the posts helped me find good resources and strategies to prepare. I started last year and have finally received an Internship Offer Letter from Goldman Sachs for June-July 2022. Couldn't have been any happier. And this would have been significantly tougher if I hadn't found this subreddit last year. Thanks a ton everyone! I am sure this community has already and will continue to help people who want to achieve something in programming! [link] [comments] |
Anyone else feel too dumb to read the answers on stack overflow? Posted: 31 Dec 2021 12:55 PM PST The answer will literally be there on google for me and I'm too dumb to integrate it into my own code and don't understand what's going on. Anyone else ever have this problem or have tips? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2021 03:27 PM PST Hey guys so I'm a university freshman and doing bachelors in Computer science. So my university is mainly focusing on java and I suck at programming. I'm trying my best to learn, my programming instructor was following an online course from Princeton by Robert Sedgwick so I tried taking that course but I still couldn't understand things properly. Is there anyone who can give me a proper path to learning java and programming overall from basics as I really like this field and would like to be good in it. I'm not giving up on it and will keep learning I just need proper guidance can someone please help?don't need to a lot of time just a nice detailed pathway to get into the field. [link] [comments] |
When to move on to JavaScript? Posted: 31 Dec 2021 05:21 PM PST I feel pretty comfortable with HTML and somewhat CSS, however I've been stuck a bit on flexbox. I'm wondering if I should continue to spend time on it or move on so I can start learning React as soon as possible. [link] [comments] |
Is CS61A hard or is it just me? Posted: 31 Dec 2021 08:35 PM PST I have about half a years worth of experience in programming and I'm following cs61a online. I am so stuck on the hog project because I feel like they don't explain the given code well enough. Anyways, is it like this for the rest of the course and how difficult do you rate this course on a scale of 1-10? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Best Udemy instructor for a complete beginner to learn from? (JS, HTML, CSS) Posted: 31 Dec 2021 04:55 PM PST I've put in some hours with freeCodeCamp and The Odin Project. What I've picked up from the general zeitgeist of Reddit is that courses are a more efficient structure to learn from. Some have said that one should try out The Odin Project for a bit to see if they're even interested in coding, and if they are, purchase a course and benefit from the added depth and optimized structure. Not sure how much of that holds weight, hence this thread. I've seen a lot of buzz about Maximillian Schwarzmuller with great reviews, yet I've seen an equal amount of reviews stating he's a terrible teacher who over complicates things and may not necessarily teach best practice. Then I've came across Colt Steele who's also highly recommended. Came across nothing negative on him thus far. I'm really just looking for the optimal, most streamlined way to the vital information and projects I'll need to consume and practice to become an employable developer while I continue my (never ending) education. Whether it's free or paid is irrelevant, and I'm not attempting to paint TOP or freeCodeCamp in any smaller light than they deserve - I simply just don't have the perspective and can't vouch for what I don't know. I'm not a dev yet. I don't know what's needed to know and what's not, and I can't determine if a course will have the content I need because I don't even know what that content is. Obviously I need to learn JS, CSS and HTML first and foremost, but different resources could have more than I need, less than I need, completely irrelevant info, etc. So I'm hoping some of you here can just point me in the right direction that someone who abhors time wasted and values efficiency would want to travel in. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2021 09:46 AM PST TL;DR : How to take notes as a programmer. I have been wondering what kind of tools you use to make sure you don't forget what you have learnt. Like any good programmer I spend a lot of time googling how to do stuff. And I noticed that I would often google the same things over and over, because I can't remember everything. So I decided to write down some kind of cheat sheet, however I use the regular notepad. It works great for now but I feel like this won't work well as I acquire more and more knowledge. I was even thinking to start blogging. I am open to any suggestions. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Stupid question probably, but how do you make a forum? Posted: 31 Dec 2021 10:45 PM PST Like if I wanted to use a video game api to make a site where you can click a game and have a forum to talk about the game. Make posts and comment on other posts and stuff. Or like a reddit comment system under the game. Is there some type of software like NodeBB or do I have to make it with html? [link] [comments] |
I enjoy the problem solving, but dislike web design. What path and language would suit me better? Posted: 31 Dec 2021 07:48 AM PST I've learned basic JavaScript/ html and css. I enjoy learning (especially JavaScript) but can't see myself designing much of anything. Everything I've learned leads me back to a web page (linking the JS file to html). This is discouraging. What path/ language do you recommend? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Why is it "best" to add the suffix f after a C float variable declaration? Posted: 01 Jan 2022 12:18 AM PST For example, float x=23.231f;, why not float x=23.231;? Apparently, if an f is not added, the compiler displays a warning, why? If this is not the correct syntax, then why does the code run? [link] [comments] |
New Year's goal: take my existing learning to the next level and need help please Posted: 31 Dec 2021 05:46 PM PST I started last year with Angela Yu's 100 days of Python class and well I didn't finish in 100 days. I went in with some basic knowledge so variables, if/else, loops, and classes were familiar. Eventually Angela broke off into intro into web dev and I lost my momentum as my end all goal was to augment my current job skill as a corporate financial analyst. I shifted to code wars and am at a level 4 kyu to maintain my syntax knowledge, but I know the key element is missing: projects. My interest and continued search is to reach the point where I can automate my job: ERP query/export into time phased spreadsheet refresh automation. As of yet I haven't found practical application in the selenium and pandas modules of Yu's class. Any suggestions on libraries or online resources that could help me move in the right direction this year? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2021 10:41 PM PST Hello everyone, I am currently learning C++ as the first programming language. I have been learning C++ for about 5 months on learncpp.com. (So far, I have completed 10 chapters), all of my programs are console applications. In my journey of learning, it is very often to hear that the best way of learning programming is through doing projects/reading other code. For that reason, I decided to go to Github and choose a Project (I chose Calculator by Microsoft). I was very shocked because of many things I couldn't understand. The project uses 2 programming languages (C++ and C# - which I don't know), moreover, when I opened the Solution, there were about hundreds of .cpp .hpp. I compiled it and ran successfully (although I got some errors at first, but after installing some components, it worked). Now I am very confused, I don't know what code file I should read first, how code files and images are combined together to create a GUI calculator. I don't know whether learning from other people's code is a good idea. Can you guys give me some advice? Is it OK when you can't understand about 80 - 90 % of a project, and just Google everything we don't know? Or should I continue learning C++ for better knowledge? Thank you in advance, English is not my mother tongue so I apologise for grammatical errors. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Dec 2021 12:34 PM PST I'm fairly new to web development, last thing I knew before knowing JS frameworks was simple html, css and php here and there. Suffice to say that I did an extensive search before diving head first into a specific framework. I tried the main three, React, Angular and Vue (didn't know about Svelte back then). Now then, this post is just to express my love and incentive new developers to try this amazing framework, Vue. All the following paragraphs are my own opinions and don't reflect exactly how things are in reality. First I started with React, biggest name in the market, lots of people using, facebook, etc. God what a mess, methods and functions all over the place, returning html tags scattered around, so much boilerplate for simple stuff. I did manage to finish a small project, but I never looked at It again (couldn't understand my own code anymore after a few days without touching It). Seconds comes Angular. WHY IS THIS PROJECT SO BIG, IT JUST SAYS "HELLO WORLD". Google always do a pretty good job to hand everything that you need, but sometimes less is more, I always kept losing myself amidst all those config files, modules and directories. Makes sense only for a big company. Last but not least comes Vue. I was a bit skeptical at first since It was an independent project not backed by a big corpo but, god, was I very very wrong. Such simplicity, suck sleek approach, if the CLI was a person It would say: "here dev, you'll definitely need this and that so I already put those in there. Oh you need some more stuff? Sure we have It, just set them up as you need". The UI manager, so good, remove or add dependencies or plugins from multiples projects with a few clicks. The star, the Composition API, "need a small component that does a very specific thing? Sure thing, may It have its own encapsulated html, script and css on the same file. Want some lifecycle hooks? There you go, simple methods directly into your component script section. The directives! The custom directives! I can do very complicated things with very simples code and implementation. Get away from here Express, just let met use "yarn serve" to test my app with full reactivity. It was love at first tag, just finished an extensive course of 31 hours on the span of two weeks and I'm confidently ready to tackle even medium sized projects. I hope you all have a wonderful new year an try Vue at least once, you'll not regret It. [link] [comments] |
Help regarding Online Notes Project Posted: 31 Dec 2021 09:46 PM PST Me and my friends are planning to make an online notes platform for High School Science Students. I want to add a search feature inside the website but I have no idea how to implement that feature. Please help. I also want to make a database of Multiple Choice Questions of different subjects and chapters. A user can select chapters and a question paper will be printed out for practise. What sort of knowledge will i need to implement this? [link] [comments] |
How to download these datasets without registering Posted: 31 Dec 2021 09:33 PM PST How can I download these datasets https://paperswithcode.com/dataset/deepfashion http://mmlab.ie.cuhk.edu.hk/projects/DeepFashion.html I'm in desperate need of a proper dataset. I have downloaded this dataset(https://www.kaggle.com/paramaggarwal/fashion-product-images-dataset), but its not giving me perfect accuracy for female category(I'm getting 67% accuracy for female and 89% for male) [link] [comments] |
Sending Completely Anonymous HTTP Requests? Python/Java Posted: 31 Dec 2021 02:46 PM PST Hey! The title is basically the question, but for more info, I'm building a project around Instagram's private API and I'm a bit worried. I have an account with 1.5m followers, built from scratch and organically since 2013. I want to make sure that any requests sent to the API have absolutely no way to be traced back to my account. It's already been "permanently disabled" before and ideally I don't want to go through that again or be shadow banned. This project will likely be nothing more than something to add to my portfolio, so I won't be doing anything suspicious or sending hundreds of requests. I'm planning to write it in both Java and Python because why not. So, what are my options for sending anonymous requests in these languages? Also, to avoid rate limiting I need to add a sessionid to the request cookies. Currently, I've just logged in to a different account in a different browser to get that. But obviously its associated by my IP and device Id. How can I do this anonymously as well? Virtual machine? [link] [comments] |
I need some advice on taking breaks Posted: 31 Dec 2021 08:31 PM PST How do I tell when I should take a break? Like it's hard for me to tell if I want to take a break because I'm legitimately exhausted and I need it or if my mind is just making up excuses so that I'll stop programming. Another question I have is how do I take a healthy break that actually helps me without starting a break and end up playing videogames and not returning to coding because I lose motivation or something? Is it the length of the break? What I do during that break? Should I avoid videogames entirely during breaks? And if so how do I ever play video games again? Because I don't want to just cut them out of my life, they're a source of a lot of joy for me and I don't want to live a life that's all work and no play, I want a balance. Is that achievable while learning to code and setting up a portfolio? [link] [comments] |

What is a realistic timeline to learn enough to get an entry level job as a front end developer [UK] Posted: 31 Dec 2021 05:47 AM PST I have a degree in actuarial science( think Maths + stats + finance) so have some familiarity with coding (used a bit of R) and have already started learning JavaScript and have been picking it up quickly (I think). My current job is very excel heavy so while I appreciate coding is a completely different beast, I do think there is a little bit of a carry over with the skills required. I want to get to a point where I have enough knowledge in CSS, HTML, and JavaScript to land an entry level job, but currently working full time so will need to work around that. I've been doing a bit of research and it seems like companies are happy to hire people without a degree in computer science, but not sure how common that is and how long I'd ultimately end up spending at the application stage. It's hard to find anything specific to the U.K. as the space seems to be dominated by the US for obvious reasons. It would also be good to know what I'd be looking at in terms of salary. It looks like positions start out at £25k so I'd be taking a pay cut. Happy with with as long as progression is good once I can prove myself a bit more. Apologies if this is not what this sub is for. Having trouble learning JavaScript for Web Development. Any free courses or YouTube playlists? Posted: 31 Dec 2021 07:19 PM PST I learned html and css. I thought I would hate it but I loved it. I have a strong background with python, java and c# but for some reason JS with web dev just isn't clicking. there is some kind of puzzle piece I am missing to understand how it works with html and css. I've gone over theodinproject and I understand JS syntax. But I cannot understand it with web. Please help it has been bothering me a lot.
