Thinking about using PS2 graphics, can anyone offer pros and cons?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 07:09 PM PST

I have an idea for a game and I'm debating between using pixel art or ps2 graphics. I've heard some cons such as "no one would want to play it because it would look old / not be intriguing enough" and that it's a "cheap way" to get out of creating my own art style.

The look i'm aiming for is something between Code Veronica and Bully (2006)

So basically, what I'm asking is: what are your opinions on using ps2 graphics for games in this day and age? What are the drawbacks and benefits?

Any feedback is appreciated, thank you!

    Solodev here

So I'm planning on developing my own game, I'll do as much as a can on my own and see where it leads me. It's a passion project, I do not plan on giving up. I'll be using Unreal Engine to develop the game. I'm beginning by learning some C++ on Udemy. I'm already halfway through the course and have learned a lot. I was just curious to know, am I doing the hard part first? Most people say programming and textcode is the hardest part of developing a game and I wanted to know for sure. Just to brace myself.

In need of some guidance. How to become a gameplay programmer.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 01:53 AM PST

Hello everyone. It's been my dream to become a gameplay programmer at a game studio such as Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, etc. (Yes, I know it's difficult dream to achieve) and I need some guidance.

I'm currently a student majoring in Computer Science and I've learned some important skills such as C++, Data Structures/Algorithms, etc. But I'm still lost on what important skills that I need to learn to become a gameplay programmer. What other skills should I learn and what should I do to practice these skills? Is there any roadmap that I can follow?

I'm planning on learning/practicing 3D math and I'm also planning on studying about game engines. Another thing I want to mention is I've learned some C++ but I want to learn more about C++ that is tailored towards game development and I'm not sure where to go or what to do to learn about that. Thank you!

What's the point of using images containing several sprites over several images containing a single sprite for 2D animations?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2022 12:38 AM PST

Title. Is it for space? Or for other reason? I mean, I can only imagine that loading a single image might somewhat take less time to process when compared to loading several, but that's about all I can think of. Although the "single image" method is a tad trickier to actually implement.

Probably a dumb question, but as I am finishing the 'engine' for my game and am laying the ground work for 2D animations instead of using still images, I just ended up asking myself this. I have this preconceived notion that in old games using a single image for a set of sprite was the usual, so I imagine that it is more efficient in some ways.

I'm making my game in c++ using Direct2D libraries if that helps answering my question. (No game engine)

(I'm not a dev, but I figure devs come here)...why has there never been knock off of Sim Earth?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 07:52 PM PST

Was it really that far ahead of its time? Just no one has wanted to do it/too niche? Is the entire concept copyrighted somehow? Especially in todays world with climate problems...seems like a perfect game to replicate climate changes (by the player and naturally as sim earth was a god game after all) and replicate an entire ecosystem

Yet decades and decades later no sim earth.
