    I can't get a single interview. Getting very discouraged. learn programming

    I can't get a single interview. Getting very discouraged.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 07:35 AM PST

    I've been going the self-taught route.

    I've learned Java, C# / .NET, Python, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, MySQL, Postgresql, and the React Framework.

    I cannot even get an interview after 100's of applications and months of tweaking different resumes and cover letters.

    Idk what to do but I feel like it's never gonna happen. Sorry for the trash post.... very frustrated.

    My 7 yr old little brother has Autism and has been really interested in Python lately, I dont know what resources to give him to learn the language completely and properly?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 04:08 PM PST

    My little brother is very bright and a high functioning Autistic. Usually when my little brother focuses on something he becomes obsessed with it and will sit there for hours playing or watching things he loves. For the longest time, he only talked about space/multi verse/planets/galaxies/force fields/black holes etc. Then it was games and I wasnt too happy about that because it seemed to just make his head race alot and its not very useful for him. One day we talked about hackers and I told him to stop downloading nonsense on phones and he told me he was downloading apps to keep the phone secure. He was deleting files and blocking all permissions to keep the phone secure. Anyway the conversation took off and then I told him to learn programming to stop future hackers. I showed him a couple of vids on youtube (intro to programming) and hes been watching Python videos ever since. The thing is, these videos on youtube have part 1, part 2 etc. Once he finishes the videos, its not like he learned the whole language. Its like they are incomplete. Not full lessons. They are short vids. What resources can I give him, a channel he can follow so that he can really learn and pick up the programming language fully and properly? I was thinking about getting him a computer so he can follow with the videos as they write codes so he can use the softwares too. I dont think there any good games for kids to learn coding. I just dont know how to let his interest grow and which channels actually teach coding fully. Hes only 7 and can have a bright future with this.

    Is it possible to learn coding by myself for free and get a job? (21y)

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 05:58 PM PST

    I always liked programming when I was younger and work from it someday. But I only have watched videos about basic stuff.

    I can't believe I had just completed my first simple text Hangman game

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 03:05 AM PST

    I was working on MIT ocw 6.0001x problem set 2 on creating a simple hangman game on Python. It was guided but I still found it extremely tough, I would have no idea how to even begin if it wasn't guided. I wanted to give up multiple times when I was stuck and didn't believe I could do it but I'm glad I pushed on. I'm beaming right now, I didn't imagine accomplishing such a small insignificant program could feel so satisfying. I'm so happy right now.

    I am interested in assembly language for fun. Which one should I pick up?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 10:28 PM PST

    I want to learn and see how things work behind the scene. I don't aim to devote much time to this language or master this language.

    Which one should I pick up? Which is easiest to do?

    Everyone says x86 is a nightmare. I want a language which has low instructions set and easier to learn.

    How was the first assembler written in bare machine code?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 08:30 PM PST

    I am trying to understand how one can make high level programing languages starting from scratch. Let's say I want to make the first assembler for assembly language. How is that done when you have no language developed yet to code it in ? I have not found an answer that is showing actual code or a snippet of the process. I would like more than just words to show how this process was done.

    Thank you in advance!

    Is there any great website where I can practice programming, but not syntax or language wise, but logic and maths wise? I notice myself knowing my language of choice, Python, quite well, but struggling to solve rather simple mathematical tasks or problems.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 02:22 AM PST

    Title basically says it all. My programming teacher says that over the years I have developped excellent knowledge of Python, but often start choosing the incorrect methods and focusing on coding rather than solving the problem at its root in my head, with a piece of paper and a pencil, and developing an algorhithm, before moving on to actually coding.

    Did anyone else actually struggle with that, if yes, what helped?

    I have tried Edabit and found it useful, but it is way out of my price range right now.

    How much programming do I need to know before I can list it on my resume?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 08:07 PM PST

    I've been struggling to find a job and decided to learn some SQL (and a little Python) hoping it will help. How much do I actually need to know before I can add a programming language to my resume?

    A little background. I have a masters in pure math (not statistics/probability/applied math) and have been applying for jobs tirelessly for the past 1.5 years. My only real "work" experience is as a high school substitute teacher and as a teaching associate in graduate school. My programming knowledge is nearly nonexistent -- I took one undergraduate course in Python and used Python for undergraduate/graduate thesis work. I am learning SQL and Python through online courses, youtube videos, and blogs with the hope that they will help me get some type of data analyst position.

    I can't think like a programmer

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 05:28 PM PST

    I have been trying to think like a programmer and just can't. I know people who know how to code applications, while I just struggle. I do not know even how to do tic tac toe, and I have been learning programming for over 2 years. If their is no tutorial, I cannot do anything. What should I do?

    I got a 100 on an assignment with JDBC!

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 04:56 PM PST

    I really like SQL and I'm pretty familiar with the basic Java concepts, but I didn't get JDBC for the longest time. Eventually something clicked and I was happy to receive a 100 in JDBC from a professor I typically don't score super high with. It's not a massive accomplishment, but I think I like databases a lot more than I originally thought!

    Using FreeCodeCamp's Relational Database doesn't show the command in VSCode

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 06:03 PM PST

    I'm trying to set up the tutorial for Relational Database courses from FreeCodeCamp and I'm not getting the option " CodeRoad: Start " in VSCode

    It also didn't specify which Configuration Files option to select, so I chose Alpine

    Here is what I see: https://ibb.co/bmdJndQ

    Nothing shows up after I type in CodeRoad: Start into the command palette. I've tried reinstalling and rebuilding as well.

    After literally of months figuring out what web / mobile app to build, I finally have my answer.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 07:52 PM PST

    I've become SUPER health conscious since having COVID around Christmas and realizing I need to start taking better care of myself and watching my health and losing weight. I'm not necessarily looking to monetize this, but I had some ideas regarding statistical analysis since I have a bit of a data analytics background so I thought I would ask for some feedback here.

    Some points that are important to me:

    1. Weight tracker
    2. BMI calculator + tracker
    3. Heart Rate tracker (resting, pre-exercise, post-exercise)
    4. SPo2 tracker
    5. Blood Sugar tracker
    6. Analytics dashboard that measures variables against each other
    7. Medication reminder (will accept medication name, dosage, time to notify)
    8. Maintenance Calorie baseline requirement
    9. Body measurements (waist size mainly)
    10. Diagnosed conditions (can provide links to resources about conditions to provide details, studies, and information)
    11. Track calories burned (possibly include activities - walking, running, biking, etc.)
    12. Export to CSV (maybe have an S3 bucket and run python script against data?)

    Any other features? Trying to not get too much into HIPPA territory, but wanting something fairly comprehensive that satisfies the CRUD app requirement, build something that useful to me from a personal standpoint and that can show potential employers that I can code and build.

    My first thought was to code it in plain HTML/CSS/JS and then convert it to React and then use React Native to build the PWA side of it.

    Getting discouraged to continue learning bcs of location.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 11:20 PM PST

    I live in japan and i'm very far away from the tech cities (tokyo,nagoya,osaka). I have been learning web dev for about 3 months now. Had a little break here and there but still learning but i keep getting discouraged bcs of my location. I don't know if ill be able to get a job and since I can't move cities. Theres a lot of software engineers all over the world to compete to if i ever apply to remote based jobs. Is it even possible for a junior dev to get a remote job? Or am I just wasting my time?

    If you answered a question on Reddit and then received an email or chat directly from the person asking the question, would you answer it? Why?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 09:55 PM PST

    Hi, there!
    I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I'm really curious about this.

    I'm answering people's questions in two communities, and sometimes people ask me directly in chat or via email.

    I love such opportunities to improve my English skills and to know what people are interested in, but on the other hand, I feel disappointed because my answers are not appreciated on Reddit.

    What do you do in such a case?

    Help

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 09:39 PM PST

    Hey guys, I am coding an endless runner game on Unity2D for a huge project and I am almost done but I ran into a problem with the scroller script. It keeps giving me an error saying Transform child out of bounds. I tried everything but it wont work. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? It would be much appreciated. Here is the code:

    using System.Collections;

    using System.Collections.Generic;

    using UnityEngine;

    public class Scroller : MonoBehaviour

    {

    public BoxCollider2D collider;

    public Rigidbody2D rb;

    private float width;

    private float scrollSpeed = -2f;

    void Start()

    {

    collider = GetComponent<BoxCollider2D>();

    rb = GetComponent<Rigidbody2D>();

    width = collider.size.x;

    collider.enabled = false;

    rb.velocity = new Vector2(scrollSpeed, 0);

    ResetObstacle();

    }

    void Update()

    {

    if (transform.position.x < -width)

    {

    Vector2 resetPosition = new Vector2(width * 2f, 0);

    transform.position = (Vector2)transform.position + resetPosition;

    ResetObstacle();

    }

    }

    void ResetObstacle()

    {

    transform.GetChild(0).localPosition = new Vector3(0, Random.Range(-3, 3), 0);

    }

    }

    Self taught Web3 Developer

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 09:24 PM PST

    Hey guys 👋

    This is my story. I'm a former web project manager who have always worked for web agency (basically managed wordpress project ..) but since a couple of months I've lost faith in that position.. working with outdated technology etc ..

    I already have sone basic knowledges on HTML CSS JS from my scholarship.

    So I started learning bunch of things on my own : NextJs, React, Solidity, Hardhat, Node for the moment ..

    I planned to become a full stack web3 dev in a year with a junior position in a blockchain oriented company's (not for the crypto hype since I'm already on it since 2014)..

    If you have any advice it's will be a pleasure :)

    Gn.

    How to earn money while learning?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 07:03 AM PST

    I'm currently studying full-stack, actually playing with node, express and mongo. The next year I will be attending university and also I need to buy a better laptop but I don't have a wealthy family. I got FCC javascript and backend certification, love algorithm scripting and platforms like hackerrank or codingame, also able to create small not complex api and projects. I think I have solid javascript knowledge.

    What I was thinking is teaching some topics I know very well to a few people charging something every class but I have never do that. Also I want to do small things as freelancer but I'm not sure due to I don't have the entire full-stack thing complete.

    I don't want to get a partial-job because paired with the university will be a hell to learn programming consistently.

    Any recommendations please?
