    What have you been working on recently? [November 27, 2021]

    Posted: 26 Nov 2021 09:00 PM PST

    What have you been working on recently? Feel free to share updates on projects you're working on, brag about any major milestones you've hit, grouse about a challenge you've ran into recently... Any sort of "progress report" is fair game!

    A few requests:

    1. If possible, include a link to your source code when sharing a project update. That way, others can learn from your work!

    2. If you've shared something, try commenting on at least one other update -- ask a question, give feedback, compliment something cool... We encourage discussion!

    3. If you don't consider yourself to be a beginner, include about how many years of experience you have.

    This thread will remained stickied over the weekend. Link to past threads here.

    Blind guy here. been learning Java/Kotlin/Python for a while, but I have no idea how to actually use this skills with things like android studio or an IDE to make a basic application.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:10 AM PST

    Hi everyone, I am a 28 year old IT student who is graduating soon. I've been personally learning how to code in python, java, and kotlin for a few years or so, but none of these skills really work outside of the IDE. I am LEGALLY blind but not totally blind, so reading is hard but not impossible for reference.

    So, for example, I LOVE dnd but cant see my dice when i roll them and the apps out there kind of suck for my purposes. I wanted to develop a VERY basic android studio Android app that uses "rand" to generate given numbers and assign them to different images based on their results, probably with an elif loop or something. Cool, my code works, it accepts input from the user using a listener for input. Now how do I turn *this* into a basic application? I watched a million tutorials on android studio, but they all seem to be outdated or just poorly written/recorded.

    Please help guide me here guys. Thank you

    People who started from scratch and got to the front end of web programming, how did you do that?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 01:48 AM PST

    My friends told me to practice python as a basis for programming. And I started to learn object programming, then html / css and then learn the web. Id like to hear some more opinions, thanks.

    I feel like I'm just not getting it and I don't know what to do.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 06:49 AM PST

    Lately I've been wondering if CS is the right field for me. I'm a university student with a psychology transfer degree. I wanted to major in psychology, but was inspired to switch majors to CS after taking an intro programming course over the summer. I've always done well in school with relatively little effort, but programming has not come naturally to me at all, and that's been a bit of a shock to my system.

    In the Java class I took over the summer, programming felt fun for the most part. I loved when I understood a problem and knew exactly how to solve it. I really loved that feeling of getting into the flow and building something from basically nothing. It's cliché, but projects really felt like puzzles and the challenge was really enjoyable for me.

    Now I'm currently taking the second programming course in this introductory series. The class still focuses on Java fundamentals but has a much greater emphasis on data structures-- right now we're learning about linked lists, and I think next week's topic is trees. In this second course, I have felt lost throughout pretty much the entire quarter. I still don't really understand linked lists, or even big O notation, even though these aren't terribly complicated concepts. If I can't immediately think of a way to solve a problem, I get really flustered and anxious, and freeze up. It's like my brain shuts down entirely and I'm suddenly unable to think about the problem I'm having in any meaningful way.

    This has me feeling very stressed about my future. I still have pre-requisites (specifically calculus 1/2/3) to catch up on before I can apply to the CS major, but I'm not sure if it's even worth it. If I can't understand basic concepts or problem solve efficiently, I doubt I have a future in the CS field. I just don't know what to do.

    Sorry for the long rant. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    What really is software development or software engineering?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:57 AM PST

    I am pretty fluent with Python but I started getting into web development and I am looking into mobile app development. I was so focused on becoming very good in python by learning algorithms and data structures that I forgot how to actually do something with my knowledge. Everything seems so interesting. Now I really have no clue what software development or software engineering is

I am looking for something like the 'think like a programmer' book (i believe the book focuses on C++, but i want soemthing that works in general or just java).

    How Much Should Someone Charge For Making A Static Website When They Are First Starting Out?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2021 08:08 PM PST

    So I am currently in school for web development and on the side, I've been working with my friend on a website for his media transfer business, [which you can see here.](www.kipsmediatransfers.ca) Despite it still being a work in progress, a lot of my friends friends seem to really like it, and one of them asked if I would make her a website for her flower shop.

    Now I am still fairly new to this. i made that website for my friend for free just to kinda get my foot in the door and it's taken a lot more time than I originally imagined. But this flower site seems like it will be a lot simpler to do and I'm not sure if I should just charge a flat rate of $100 (is $100 too much for something like this?) or should I just do it on a by page basis?

    Choosing programming language

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 07:29 AM PST

    Hey guys, I need help with choosing the right programming language. I've been watching YT tutorials about HTML and Python and was writing the most basic codes. In the future, I would like to write my own plugins and mods into games, create bots, experiment with AI, etc. The problem is IDK what language is perfect for this. I've heard that C# is great or more complex C++, but I wanna hear it from you guys, what do you think?

    Learning programming up to freelancing

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 08:30 AM PST

    Hi, I'm coming from being an employee for decades and planning to learn programming before my very early retirement next year. I have no programming experience, basically I know how to use the computer, MS office and internet. I have questions:

    1. How long will it take me to be learn programming and being capable to do online freelancing?
    2. Which programming languages should I learn? From best.
    3. Should I learn thru free websites/books? If yes, where? If no, a 2yr or 4yr formal education? Or an online certification is enough? Where?

    Purpose is to have something to do when retired (few hours/days a week) and have some salary as backup from my savings. I've heard programming is confusing. Thank you.

    Looking for feedback and code review

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 11:38 AM PST

    Hello, I'm a A.S graduate and new to programming and software development. I got a couple of personal projects on Github and would like some feedback on one. I've built an image gallery in Java and JavaFX (a GUI application) to familiarize myself with the language and GUI toolkit as well as Git/Github systems. It is not a small project, so I would like some feedback of just one specific file. The feedback and code review I'm looking for is regarding basic programming practices, Java language practices, class design, code efficiency. This is my first time sharing this stuff with people. I don't personally know any programmers or developers, so I'm just going at it alone here.

    The purpose of the file (Main_Layout.java) is to define a GUI component and to set the general layout and style of the application as well as the menu items. With that said, here is the link to the source code. https://github.com/JTGuevara/JTs-Gallery/blob/main/src/jt_guevara/Main_Layout.java

    Best programming language for GUI?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 07:31 AM PST

    I'm confused and seeking for suggestions.

    I want to learn a programming language to build GUI for me, the program will be for archiving texts. Any way, I found my self confused, there are plenty of options and I want just one programming language for ever, but learning one programming language for one program that's insane! So what should I do?

    By the way I'm familiar with C# C++ and Python but I use only PHP for web development.

    C++: Returning an array or integers through an inline function in

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 10:48 AM PST

    So, I have a class which has an array of integers as one of it's attributes. I have a get function, which works fine. But my inline function, a member of the class, will not return an array.
    Here's the code needed for it to be runnable:

    class BF{

    private:
    int NUM_QUESTIONS[50];

    public:
    array<int, 50> getQuestions() const {return NUM_QUESTIONS;}

    }

    The issue is (array<int, 50> getQuestions() const {return NUM_QUESTIONS;})

    What I have tried:
    I listed the type as int[] , or int[]*, or int[50], and I keep getting this error: "does not name a type".

    I'd rather use a vector but for some reasons I cannot.

    How can I help my partner write better code?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2021 11:26 PM PST

    I am a college student (third year) and I work with a partner for the projects in one class. My partner is pretty good at writing code that works, but they cannot write code that can be easily read. They do not put spaces between if, for, while and parentheses (for(...){...}) for example. They use variable names like temp and rsHeap. They write long functions with large blocks of duplicate code without many comments. These are just a few examples I could think of off the top of my head.

    For the sake of their future coworkers and myself when debugging and using their code, how can I help them? Early on in the year I pointed out a bunch of these things in one project, but they continue to write bad code. If anyone has dealt with someone like this effectively, I'd love to hear how!

    Newbie PHP/MySQL question: editing records in a list

    Posted: 27 Nov 2021 10:35 AM PST

    Okay, I've been stuck on this one on and off for half the semester. I have a list of records I've pulled from my database, and I want to be able to edit one of them. It's a mess, it's my first PHP project and I'm a newb so any suggestions are appreciated. The problem of course is only the last record read is being placed into the session variable. I've tried putting in a counter variable at the start, and and increment it after the session variables are assigned, but $firstName = $row['firstName_$count']; for example is being seen as the literally count and not being replaced by the variable.

    I'm just trying to make this work, so if you have any direction I could look in, OR if you could suggest a better way, or a resource I should stick my nose in, there would be many <3s!

    session_start(); while($row = $stmt->fetch()) { $apptID = $row['apptID']; $firstName = $row['firstName']; $_SESSION['first_name'] = $firstName; $lastName = $row['lastName']; $_SESSION['last_name'] = $lastName; $email = $row['email']; $_SESSION['email'] = $email; $date = $row['date']; $_SESSION['date'] = $date; $startTime = $row['startTime']; $_SESSION['startTime'] = $startTime; $timeLength = $row['timeLength']; $_SESSION['timeLength'] = $timeLength; $apptLocation = $row['apptLocation']; $_SESSION['apptLocation'] = $apptLocation; $reminder = $row['reminder']; $_SESSION['last_name'] = $lastName; $status = $row['status']; $_SESSION['last_name'] = $lastName; //echo '<tr><th> ApptID </th><th> First Name </th> <th> Last Name </th> <th> Email </th> <th> Date </th> <th> Start Time</th> <th> AppointmentID </th></tr> '; echo '<td>' . $apptID . '</td><td>' . $firstName . '</td><td>' . $lastName . '</td><td>' . $email . '</td><td>' . $date . '</td><td> ' . $startTime . '</td><td>' . $timeLength . '</td><td>' . $apptLocation . '</td><td>' . $reminder . '</td><td>' . $status . '</td> <form action="." method="POST"><input type="hidden" name="action" value="edit_stuff"> <td><button type="submit" name="edit">Edit</button></td> <td></td> </tr>';
