    AMP and Google Anti Trust Lawsuit

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 02:54 PM PST

    You might be interested in what I found in the Google Antitrust Lawsuit:

    Google also started using its economies of scale in the search market to strongarm publishers and advertisers to stop using header bidding and re-route trading through Google's ad server. Header bidding is only possible if publishers can insert JavaScript code into the header section of their webpages. To respond to the threat of header bidding, Google created Accelerated Mobile Pages ("AMP"), a framework for developing mobile web pages, and made AMP essentially incompatible with JavaScript and header bidding. Google then used its power in the search market to effectively force publishers into using AMP.

    Google throttles the load time of non-AMP ads by giving them artificial one-second delays in order to give Google AMP a "nice comparative boost."

    Google Search ranks non-AMP pages lower in search results

    40 percent less revenue on AMP pages

    Can't confirm if this is true. I'm a systems programmer, not a web dev.

    Coming back to web dev after a few years; how do the cool kids structure their CSS these days?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 09:02 AM PST

    I'm a former full-stack developer who pivoted to video for a few years. I am now (partially) moving back to web dev, and need to refresh my skills. I'm finally getting around to learning React since I never learned it back in my .Net days, and I want to build new and healthy habits. I used to consider CSS to be one of my strong suits, but currently, a bit less so. I prefer to write all my own code, but I try to be less dogmatic about that in my old age.

    So what approach should I take to CSS in this modern era?

    Are preprocessors going the way of jQuery?

    Should I use a framework, or start from scratch? I used to use Pure.css as a starting point for bigger projects, and I've used but never really liked Bootstrap for some smaller sites.

    What best-practices or new paradigms should I learn to structure my code? I am just now reading about BEM, for example. Is that laughably out of date, overly simplistic, or the right path for someone who likes very well ordered complexity?

    HOW do I stop Docker from constantly popping up asking me to install updates????

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 06:48 AM PST

    This is intensely bad. Every day—feels like sometimes multiple times a day, Docker pops up asking me to install an update. How can anyone think this is a good idea?

    Does anyone know how to disable this? A quick search showed me that to disable checking for updates, you need to be a paid user. I'm not.

    If anyone from Docker reads this, the way to convince your users to upgrade to a paid plan is not by harrassing them with unavoidable popups.

    Laptop ideas

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 05:15 PM PST

    Hello was thinking of getting a new laptop. I have a MacBook 2017 cheaper model, so was looking maybe windows. I'm learning web dev as my software development degree did not teach that I was taught c++ and python. So I need something that can do both. Was looking at ThinkBook 13s Gen 2 Intel from Lenovo. But at open to suggestions for anything under $800 especially with Black Friday. I would like a gpu to do light gaming but cheap gaming laptops have 8gb of ram and I value ram over gaming

    Edit: also looking at the GIGABYTE G5 MD

    Learning to collaborate - Git, project management, etc? Any recommended resources?

    Is there any good in depth tutorial on this? I would like to just jump into it, but I think it's better to understand the possibilities first, and find out the things I wouldn't find otherwise.

    Action plan for web development?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 08:31 PM PST

    I'm a recent grad and have never been an interview before. Recently, in a interview about development of a Website I've been asked to submit an action plan for it. What things I'm supposed to cover in the submission? Like, do I have to cover up the whole structure for the site or just the technologies that I think are needed for the end product.

    Chrome DevTools debugging...

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 02:27 PM PST

    No matter in what way I try to tell Chrome DevTools to ignore a file it doesn't work. Weirdly enough it shows all the files I didn't want to go through just to tell me they are being ignored.

    I've tried patterns, "ignore content scripts" checkbox, right-click on the file, etc.

    If it's on the ignore list, why is it showing?

    Getting started with ads, what are the limits?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 07:50 PM PST

    Hey, I am trying to get started with ads. Before I spend too much of this upcoming holiday weekend figuring it all out, I have an important question that will make or break the idea. Some games allow users to watch ads or whatever in exchange for something. I think I'd like to do something similar.

    The most important question I have from the get go is - are there limits? Could I allow a user to opt into a bunch of ads that auto play for several hours?

    The second most important thing - how do I get stared? lol I am a programmer and don't know any ad lingo so I can't cut through all of the noise in google. If the best way to start is signing up with a random service like adsense and getting an ad onto one of my web pages - great, good to know! Do I talk to them directly to see if they'd be willing to go for my continuous ad delivery by negotiating a lower rate?

    Thanks for any advice. I do plan to do more of my own research but I would be pretty sad if I find out sunday that I wasted that research effort lol.

    How should I handle my current job and my resume?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 07:22 PM PST

    I'm really starting to dislike my new job. Originally, it was supposed to be a full-stack .net based role. Unfortunately, I'm doing a lot of sql reporting/querying work. Unfortunately, it's been a minute since I've done sql/reporting work and I feel like I'm behind the curve.

    I've been here about 2.5 months, should I stick around and see if I get to do front-end work. Hopefully, I'll come off as a better front-end person and I'll be able to focus on that.

    If I bail/get fired, I'll have a lot going against me.

    This is how my resume would look, if I tell the truth:

    11/2020 - 7/2021 - DevOps Engineer - I got this role from a former colleague and the plan was I would learn while doing it. Unfortunately, I was way over my head and couldn't get up to speed and I got the boot.

    7/2021 - 9/2021 - It took me 2 months find my next job. Unfortunately if I'm honest, Recruiter Karen or the boomer in charge of IT will hold this against me.

    9/2021 - Present - My current role

    I'm thinking that I could explain my current role as a contract and the contract ended and now I'm back out on the market.

    As for the DevOps role, I'm thinking it is time that role should be labeled as an engineer. I'll list that I did development for that role. That role was also a contract role that ended. Unfortunately, in my previous job search I would try to explain how I wasn't good in DevOps and was hoping to return to development. Unfortunately, the hiring managers heard "wasn't good" and assumed that I wouldn't be good them.

    I learned a long time ago. I could be the honest guy that doesn't get job or the dishonest guy that job the job. Sadly, I have bills to pay and I have to take the second option.

    I want to implement a comment system on my website (with upvotes and the ability to edit/delete comments) without requiring the users to sign up, come up with a password, or verify their email. Is it possible to do this, and keep it relatively secure, and avoid spam? How would you do it?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 09:34 AM PST

    Here's what I've been thinking so far:

    • To avoid spam, simply disincentivize it by disallowing links in the comments. Say something like "Your comment appears to contain a link. To prevent spam, it will need to be approved by the moderator before it becomes visible to other users."
    • To make sure that a user can only upvote a comment once, use their IP. Each comment stores a list of IPs that upvoted it, and checks whether there has already been a vote from this IP. If someone goes as far as using a VPN to overcome this system and game upvotes - that's fine, I'm building comments for a small personal blog, I think it's unlikely enough that it won't really matter any time soon.
    • To allow the users to edit/delete their comments, use cookies. Store some unique information about the user in a cookie, and if they have they cookie - allow them to edit the post. If they delete the cookie or log in from a different device - they just won't be able to edit/delete the comments anymore.

    Do you guys think this is a reasonable solution? Are there better ways to overcome these limitations?

    I really don't want to make the users to create profiles and confirm their emails. Since I'm doing this for my personal blog, I feel like this will create too high of a barrier for commenting.

    (I also don't want to use google captcha, since it's even more annoying than logging in, in my opinion)

    Is it better to hire a QA engineer or find another solution?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 05:40 AM PST

    Hello! We've been working on our project for some time, and although we're doing everything in our power to prevent any bugs from occurring, still we aren't almighty. Now, a discussion has erupted in our fellowship about whether we should hire one individual who'll help with QA or whether it'll be better to choose one of those companies that provide testing assistance.

    Before joining this project, I worked in a large company where there was also outside testing besides the QA department. This practice proved to be very helpful and was critical for a timely release. So, I suggested contacting the software testing professionals I previously worked with to develop the right strategy and test the entire project inside and out. But I didn't find much support from my colleagues.

    Most insist that one single person will be enough to develop a strategy and identify all the shortcomings, especially since we're on a short budget. Personally, I don't believe that. If we save on testing now, it may bite us in the ass after going live. Also, I don't think that one person, even if it's the Tony Stark of QA, will be able to evaluate UI, LQA and UAT, and many other aspects. Maybe I'm wrong, and there are such geniuses, but how long will it take? I doubt that we'll be able to launch our project till the New Year as we planned.

    Someone suggested that we involve our family and friends in testing, but remembering that we tried that after design approval and it didn't go very well, the majority didn't approve it. Then we didn't receive any constructive ideas, but instead, we got lots of opinions about our designer like: "you overpay him" or "my five-year son could do better."

    I'd be grateful if you could let me know if I'm mistaken about lobbying for an external QA solution and also if you could share your opinion and experience involving a single QA engineer or an outsource company. Thanks in advance.

    a way to speed up image loading from URLs

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 01:21 PM PST

    I made a website for my wallpaper collection repo and loading the images with the raw links fetched with GitHub API. Since there are above 100 wallpapers in the repo, the website is taking time to load. Is there a way I can speed up the image loading? Also, I must mention that I am not using the API directly but exporting the data into a file removing everything except the raw link URL and making an array those.

    This is the website. Please help. Thanks in advance.

    Component Abstraction: mixin or composition?

    Component Abstraction: mixin or composition?

    Hi everyone, I met a problem and want to discuss with you.

    I need to implement gestures for all of our Components in a UI library. I have two options:

    1. use Mixin and mix into all components throughout the UI library.
    2. use Composition. When someone needs to use gestures, wrap Component in a Gesture component.

    Which one do you recommend in terms of component API design and maintainability? Thanks :)

    ps: mixins are using pseudo code (we're not using React or Vue.js, this is an internal framework)

    How much to charge for another website to advertise on my own?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 01:07 PM PST

    Mine is ranked no4 and theirs is as no5.

    They contacted me to advertise their website on mine through a button, and said they will pay a flat fee of $600pm for a start. I've got about 25k unique visitors pm.

    I'm a bit anxious as this might switch the rankings if I add theirs on, and I honestly this is really important to me, given this is basically my hobby website.

    Issue with drag and drop API, calculating the height of an element

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 12:16 PM PST

    I'm trying to make a react component that I can resize vertically by dragging it up and down.

    I've run into an interesting issue, when I'm trying to calculate the proper initial height of the element i'm resizing.

    The element i'm resizing is absolutely positioned beneath another relatively positioned box, and it has overflow: scroll so it has a scrollbar.

     let diff = resizeBox.current.offsetHeight - resizeBox.current.clientHeight;

    Here, I consistently get a 13px. However... Sometimes it's 14px. How can this happen?

    edit: I should mention i'm not manipulating the border, or scrollbar at all -- just the style.top and style.height of the resized element.

    Is it possible to white label a CNAME/TXT record?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 03:24 PM PST

    I have a subdomain which acts as a white label website for another software, which was set up by adding a CNAME record to the subdomain and a domain key TXT record.

    I can effectively white label this white label software, but to do so would mean my customers would need to add CNAME and TXT records which include the name of the original software.

    Is it possible to white label this, so that the records I share with customers contains my brand, but still redirects to the original software?

    [Need Help] How to change cursor on hover of data labels in chart.js version 3?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 08:23 AM PST

    I've been trying to change the mouse cursor to 'pointer' as soon as it is hovered on the data label.

    I'm effectively able to achive this effect while hovering over data-points, so that is fine.

    options: { onHover: (eve, legendItems, chartElement) => { if (_.get(eve, 'native.target.style')) { eve.native.target.style.cursor = legendItems[0] ? 'pointer' : 'default'; } } }

    I'm trying to follow this current documentation for the ChartDataLabels Plugin : https://chartjs-plugin-datalabels.netlify.app/guide/events.html#example

    `` listeners: { click: ({ datasetIndex, dataIndex }) => { setTileActive(report.id); populateDrills(report.id, reportGroup, report.data.dataset[datasetIndex].values[dataIndex]); executeScroll(); return; }, enter: async (context) => { context.hovered = true; const chartTileElem = document.getElementById(${report.id}-chart`); console.log('<><><><', chartTileElem.style.cursor, context);

     // _.set(context, 'chart.canvas.style.cursor', 'pointer'); _.set(chartTileElem, 'style.cursor', 'pointer'); // context.chart.canvas.style.cursor = 'pointer'; return; }, leave: (context) => { context.hovered = false; // const chartTileElem = document.getElementById(`${report.id}-chart`); // chartTileElem.style.cursor = 'default'; // context.chart.canvas.style.cursor = 'default'; return; }, color: (context) => { return context.hovered ? 'green' : null; } }

    ```
    This does re-render the chart but doesn't change the cursor to pointer when needed. One weird behaviour I've found out is that it does change cursor to pointer in some of the bar-charts when the hovered item is of the highest value in that chart. Again, that happens rarely.
    So please do suggest any solid solution that would change the cursor on hover of the data label.
    EDIT-1: the suggested similar question: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/45149062/chart-js-how-to-show-cursor-pointer-for-labels-legends-in-line-chart
    differs a lot from this one. As it talks about the onHover behaviour on labels and legends, where as, in this thread I'm trying to find a solution for the data labels that gets rendered on top of the chart's data points.
    Fastest and easiest way to learn and make a simple front end? Just HTML+CSS or React?
    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 02:33 AM PST
    Hello, for school I need to make some simple website where users can login and submits reviews of films. The endside has to be done using Java Servlets . I kinda want to make something decent but still something that doenst require that much time, which of the options mentioned will be more suitable?
    I dont know much about react but isnt it known from being able to make websites really fast? I'm kinda leaning towards React for this reason but want to make sure if its viable.
    Yes I have programming experience but mostly from C, C++ and Java, first time really diving into web dev.
    Any other suggestion will be highly appreciated!
    Edit: as additional info, I have roughly 30 days for this project
    ASP/C# control for "multilevel" tables (noob)
    Posted: 23 Nov 2021 01:27 PM PST
    I have a database with multiple tables. Let's call them A and B.
    B is a child table to A: several rows in B have foreign key relationships to the same row in A.
    I would like my page to show a "Table of Contents" view: show the first entry in A, then all the corresponding child entries in B (indented), the the second entry in A, then its child entries in B and so forth.
    Each row, whether A or B is being shown in it, needs to be shown with some corresponding data from the row (e.g. when the row was last modified, whether it was A or B).
    What control is best for doing this? A GridView or Table control would be possible, but it would also need some backend code, and I don't think a TreeView can show row details.
