Posted: 07 Oct 2021 04:43 PM PDT As the questions suggest. I feel those two specific fields I am not especially good in and I want to get a better grasp on them. What suggestions do you have in terms of resources?? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Oct 2021 12:36 PM PDT I'm at a loss. My senior dev spends more time working with, checking on, and talking to everyone else besides myself. When I message them a question I get a convoluted or dry response and then they somehow just so happen to go on a call or their status turns yellow on teams. It's deliberate as it happens too often to be a coincidence and literally every time I ask something. I also noticed the tonality during our chats when ever we are on a call, almost like their annoyed. Coding is already hard enough, life is already stressful enough and I'm seriously weighing my options on staying being that this job takes up my whole day working 40hrs a week while I can't even get any help without fear of pissing off the only person that could help me. I'm not trying to whine, as I'm grateful for a job but this is seriously so uncomfortable. I try my best to be a "team player" write the best code that I can, learn, attend all the meetings, etc and just confirm to what the company wants as it saps all of my energy everyday. All to end up getting treated like shit. Makes me feel like a failure because I don't already know how everything works from front end to Middleware to back end to CI/CD. What I'm I supposed to do other than just get good enough that I don't need help? Btw I cannot change assignments I'm stuck. Edit: thank you all for the responses and great suggestions [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Oct 2021 02:53 AM PDT My senior architectured everything. I'm trying to learn as much as I can but he leaves next week and I'm not learning fast enough. [link] [comments] |
What are some book recommendations of how to think and solve things like a programmer? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 04:02 PM PDT I just checked the free programming books repo in Github and found the large list to be very overwhelming, although paid book recommendations are fine. I'm not looking for a language specific book that teaches concepts of a language and its syntax. I'm simply looking for a book that tackles more on solving things, some coding concepts and examples on how its used, algorithms, how to "think like a programmer", a book that deals with the technicality of programming. I'm majoring in Computer Science and would love to learn more skills on how to program aside from learning how to write in a specific language. [link] [comments] |
What material do I need alongside FreeCodeCamp Posted: 07 Oct 2021 07:30 PM PDT I made the decision that I will be going through freecodecamp's course in order that it is listed, but should I get any other resources that are online and free to aid in this, as im an absolute beginner and unfamiliar with code terminology, but from what research I have done, FCC is the way to go, what should I be using alongisde it to practisce and greaten my knowledge/familiarity. Posted: 07 Oct 2021 09:50 PM PDT Not sure if this is relevant here, is it? I'm currently not familiar with Microsoft .net, but want to make a fork of this .net project with cross-platform GUI support. [link] [comments] |
Can I compete with CS grad when I don't have any background in programming? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 04:59 AM PDT My new job requires me to learn programming and I have absolutely no experience in programming at all. I am afraid that I could never reach the level of expertise of my peers who had a CS background in college. I know this is a mental block that I need to get over it, but I just couldn't help but feel inferior. :( [link] [comments] |
Do Immediately Invoked Functions run immediately even if you use Function expression? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 10:17 PM PDT From what I've read Function declaration and Function expression are only different in that declarations are being hoisted while expressions are not. And if I understand correctly IIFE would work the same way in both cases but with a function expression I should be mindful of putting it at the beginning of the code, if I want it to run first, or else it won't work. Am I missing something? [link] [comments] |
Hey r/learnprogramming I just started C# and I'm pretty sure I can do this. Posted: 07 Oct 2021 03:44 PM PDT I started this Bob Tabor series today and I can totally do this. I've stopped after each video and re-written a second, more complex example program and its always worked with minimal errors. I'm having a blast. If anyone has any other recommendations, that would be cool too. [link] [comments] |
How should I take notes when doing the colt steele Web developer bootcamp course? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 05:32 PM PDT Hi so I have been following this series for a while and I'm a bit confused on the best way to go about following it? So far I've just typed everything his typing in VS code and followed along like that but then he said you need to download the resources to follow him on one of the tutorials so I downloaded the html css and his already filled in the code his showing on the videos? So should I just watch the videos go through the exercises and then work on the projects as this seems to ge quicker but I'm not sure if I'll learn as much? [link] [comments] |
Writing a structure to binary file, assigning to a pointer (C++) Posted: 07 Oct 2021 09:55 PM PDT Hello, My professor and I have just been looking over this code for the past hour and can't figure out what's going wrong. Basically we have two files here -- the first creates a series of student structures and writes them to a binary file. The second opens the file and is supposed to read each student individually. The program successfully reads the first student but fails to read the others. We checked the binary file and it seems to be written correctly, and populated with the right amount of bytes. (first program) First program -- creates a student structure from a text file, writes to binary In the second program, the output is data for one student followed by a series of lonely zeroes. Second Program -- reads and prints binary file If you have any suggestions we would sure appreciate the help. Please let me know if you need any clarification. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Oct 2021 12:07 AM PDT Hello everyone! My name is Ilya. I'm 16 years old and I want to apply for a republican olympiad organized by the University I want to get to. If I win, I will get a grant for 3 years of studying (it's veeeery important for me) and some other privileges. It's, as I understood, like a Coding Competition, when you need to solve coding problems using one of the following programming languages: C++, Java, Phyton or Pascal. It's organized on a HackerRank.com platform and this competition has 3 stages: 1) Easy 2) Medium 3) Hard The first, "Easy" stage will take place on the 14th of November. I have a month to prepare for it. The second "Medium" stage will be on January 30 and the third "Hard" will take place somewhere in the March/April. The problem is that I don't know how to program in these languages. I've only had an experience of making some small console programs in C# (also I made a small game on Unity Engine using C#, but I was just following a tutorial on YouTube, so I've learned almost nothing). The language that I'm thinking of learning for this Coding Competition is C++, and there are several reasons for it: 1) It's, as I understood, going to be the main programming language I will study in this university. 2) I kinda want to develop games, and I'm interested in using Unreal Engine, which also uses C++. 3) C++ is a powerful language, so if I master it, it will be cool! (I'm also kind of interested in developing websites) So as the result: if I learn it, it will help me with developing my own games in Unreal Engine, it will help me with studying in University, because I will already know a lot of the things we are going to learn, so I might master it even more. Also this language, as I understood, is in demand, because it can be used in a lot of industries to develop a variety of programs, website etc. Just overall it's a great language. I know that it is hard to learn, but at the same time it might teach me some of the things that would improve my understanding of computers and systems in general. I want to hear your advices, recommendations and thoughts on my situation. What language do you recommend learning for the competition? What sites and sources I can use for my preparation and learning? I have 1 month to prepare for the first stage and I think it will be easy, as long as I know the basics. Then I also have time to prepare for the second and third stages, so I think I can do it. What are your advices? Thanks beforehand! P.s.: Here is the list of things, that will be on the competition. 1) First stage: Solving problems in one of the programming languages (Python, C ++, Java, Pascal) using conditional operators, loops, functions. 2) Second: Solving problems in one of the programming languages (Python, C ++, Java, Pascal) using arrays, strings. The second stage may include topics from the first stage. 3) Third: Solving problems in one of the programming languages (Python, C ++, Java, Pascal) using recursion, basic algorithms and data structures. The third stage may include topics from the second stage. C++ Course created by the University includes: First program. Variables and data types. Input Output Conditional Operators Loop Operators Functions Arrays Sorting Strings Recursion Stack, queue, dec Binary search Sorry for a looot of text🙂 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Oct 2021 02:18 PM PDT I'm in my second year into my associates in software development with a focus on web and honestly I feel so behind and unmotivated. I took one whole year of c++ and haven't used it in months. Right now I'm learning about DBs and JS for web but it's hard to get interested in it. My python skills are patchy. I was planning on going to uni after for a bachelors but I'm not sure now. I don't know any other languages. I feel like doing other things such as game development, robotics (like Michael reeves), or ML/AI. I feel it'll be more rewarding for me to do that. Cybersecurity sounds pretty cool too. Downside is I would have to self-teach. I've hardly retained much of what I've learned due to my classes being online so I don't think I'll learn much if I watch tutorials on YouTube. So yeah I've plateaued and don't know if it's worth it. [link] [comments] |
How am I going to make a project? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 06:31 PM PDT I need some advice. I am aware companies need projects to show case my work. But the problem is this. I don't know where to start. I don't know where to truly begin. I struggle trying to make a great project. I kinda also lack motivation since I always feel like I'm slacking when there's nothing to set a goal to get it to work. I have learned a couple of stuff and currently been learning and refreshing my coding skills from university, including Java, C, Python, and more. I wonder if you have advice when it comes to making a project and how can I showcase it to everyone, including in my resume. [link] [comments] |
How to aggregate data in Django? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 10:44 PM PDT Hi Reddit, I have a Vue, Django integrated project. I hosted the Vue project on Netlify and the Django project on Heroku. A python script (integrated into Heroku) is called on certain buttons which extract data and posts this to the Django API and PostgreSQL database to be viewed on the frontend. Now in one of my tables, I have information about 3 football players. I have the position of three players (pos1, pos2, pos3), their names (name1, name2, name3), their rating, number of goals and assists. So within every row, there are 15 columns with this information for 3 players. I want to make a table, where I would see the player name, and aggregated stats from the other 4 data points (number of games played at a certain postition, average rating, etc.). However, it may be that e.g. Ronaldo is in the 'name1' column in one row, and in the 'name2' column in another row. The data for Ronaldo would in the first row be the 'pos1', 'rating1', etc., and in the other row, it would be 'pos2', 'rating2'. What would be the best way to achieve this, getting the data in django, and returning the aggregated data back with a request? May it be that it would be better to make another table with another player on each row? If so, is there a difference in size (mbs) in tables if one has many rows and few columns, and the other has many columns but few rows? Would appreciate the help! [link] [comments] |
changing cursor in javafx webview Posted: 07 Oct 2021 10:36 PM PDT I have a stage which has a webview in it and I want the cursor to chance when it is in the webview. I tried webView.setCursor(Cursor.WAIT)but this did nothing. I also tried following the answer in this question JavaFX WebView: how do I change the default cursor? but I just got the error
This it the code I have so far from that answer: [link] [comments] |
Is there any interest in pairing up doing algorithm/ds problems? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 08:04 PM PDT Anyone interested in tackling some algorithm problems? We could each work on the same problem. Then share our implementation with each other. While this is really language agnostic, it would be great to be paired with someone of the same language I'm currently focusing on (actually 2 in this case: We could set our own cadence but at least once a week for an hour. I'm currently involved in other groups doing pair programming. And its the way to go! edit: add c++ to that! [link] [comments] |
Is there any advantage in using C over C++? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 05:17 PM PDT From what I've read it seems that C++ is mostly an upgraded version of C. So I was wondering, is there anything that C is still better at? [link] [comments] |
I Don't Understand Data-Oriented Design. Would you explain it in simple terms so I can understand? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 10:15 PM PDT I've tinkered with programming over the last few years, mainly with C#, and recently, C/C++. I understand what object-oriented programming is, but what is data-oriented design? I understand it's more commonly used in video games than anywhere else. I know it can be more efficient than an object-oriented approach, but I see people online say things like "structure of arrays" or "array of structures" when talking about it, and I just don't get it. I've watched three or four videos talking about data-oriented design, and it still leaves me stumped. I'd be grateful if anyone can explain it to me. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
How do you go about analysing other people’s code and projects. Posted: 07 Oct 2021 08:54 PM PDT This may seem like a dumb question, but I would like to hear your thoughts. I am currently trying to analyse a few different open source projects on GitHub and am struggling to figure out how these projects are structured. I like to approach programming with a holistic view, where I try to understand how it's all connected. With larger code bases I often struggle to figure out where a program 'starts' and how it is organised. Everyone has their own way of structuring a project, so how do you go about analysing code someone else has written to the point where you feel comfortable with how it all fits together? Webpack error when ‘yarn run build’ ran in my docker build. Posted: 07 Oct 2021 08:10 PM PDT After 'yarn run build' ran in my Docker build I ran into a webpack error. The error seems to be related with my webpack configuration. You can find my terminal output, full Dockerfile, and a link to my webpack.config.js here. Any help is greatly appreciated. I look forward to your response, thank you! [link] [comments] |
Converting terminal program to GUI? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 07:49 PM PDT I created a blackjack game as a personal project with Java, intending to write the back end and then use swing to quickly change it from a text based game to a card game with a graphic display. However, as I am researching more on swing it seems like I'll basically have to rewrite everything I wrote in order to create the visual output in swing. I'm a bit confused because some of my SWE friends told me to do it this way by "writing the backend first". I don't understand why they advised me to do this because I don't think it'll be much help to me at all and I'd have been better off just writing it all at once. Am I missing something or will I likely have to do a ton of reworking to display the game using swing? Debating if I'd be better off just adding more advanced features to the command line game I already have instead? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Oct 2021 07:41 PM PDT We are using Zybooks for the platform and even though in run mode my output is correct, in the submission mode it says I'm falling short a character on the input side. If anyone sees anything that would be helpful. An example is when I have Bob as my input Zybooks would say I only have Bo. I also have it setup to ignore spaces [link] [comments] |
How does the TMZ website do this with their webplayer? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 11:16 PM PDT (by the way if you didn't know they found the zodiac killer) If you dont want to click Ill try to explain: The video plays in the normal player on the top of the page you see on most websites. However when you scroll down to read the article the site recognizes this and seamlessly switches to a smaller player on the bottom right that follows you as you read. Its done very well. I've seen attempts but never this good. I could just be living under a rock though because I've been primarily using a phone for years and just got a new laptop. It's really cool though and I'd love to know how they do it. What are they using to do this? Anyone know? This is all that shows in the inspect element for the video player but its nothing: [link] [comments] |
