Using CMS vs WordPress, question for an engineer. Posted: 07 Oct 2021 10:55 AM PDT Hi all, So I'm a software engineer working mostly on web apps and apis, but have been thinking about webdev as a side piece. The only part I can't seem to find helpful information about is regarding WordPress and cms. I was thinking of building sites and having some cms powering it, WordPress is the always heard of solution, but from what I can see, it might just be that it's the easier solution for non devs to work with. Anyone have any opinions on this or suggestions for other what they've worked with, I know of content fully, etc. but just wanted people's experience/opinions. Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Oct 2021 02:01 PM PDT I got offered interviews at two small companies, both marketing agencies. I'm completely self-taught and only know HTML, CSS, and JS and have been pretty upfront about that. Both companies require strong PHP skills and Wordpress experience as well as some Drupal, etc. I'm honestly shocked I was offered interviews. I'm wondering whether it's a good idea or if it would be appropriate to ask for an internship (paid or unpaid) if I don't get the position or if I make it known that I would be willing to work as an intern during the interview? Or should I just go in, and try to sell myself even though I don't feel ready. Right now, I don't care about the money, I just really want experience and a chance at some mentorship. Is there a easy way to learn flexbox and grid in CSS? Posted: 06 Oct 2021 11:11 PM PDT I have been self learning CSS and have practised making web page layouts but most of the time it is a trial and error approach that takes me ages. I was relying heavily on relative and absolute to position items which meant everything looked wrong or took a while to get anything in position. I want to get flexbox and grid-down so I can create nice web pages, is there an easier way to learn this? [link] [comments]
How to find clients as a Web developer and designer? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 10:48 AM PDT Hello, I don't know if this is the right place to ask but i recently created a company that focuses on creating modern looking websites for a relatively cheap price when i look at the competition around me being around 500-1000 euros depending on the users needs and the cheapest competitor i found was double my price (im in germany if that matters). For now I've been calling companies that i find on google which have very outdated or no websites at all and ask them if they are interested in getting a website done or getting their old one renewed. around 80% of them dismiss me and tell me that their not interested, which is about what i expected. And for the other 20% they say that they're interested and i give them my e-mail and site adress so that they can reach out to me later. However, none ever reached back to me yet. Granted, I've only been doing this for about a week but I still feel like i should've landed my first job already. I even make them a special offer that the 1st year of hosting/maintenance is free (the original price should be abt 50 euros a month). Is this about whats expected? Am i just being impatient and should keep going at it this way or am i doing something wrong? Any tips, suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance! Heres my company Website (I'ts in german though): laven-web.com [link] [comments]
what are some talks you really liked in the last year or two? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 11:30 AM PDT i like to watch/listen to talks when i am just resting after a long session of learning. topics i want the talks about are for MERN stack, but you can also link some javascript/css/html talks. i also like the ones talking about new ideas/techs that devs need to be aware of [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 Oct 2021 12:36 PM PDT I've watched some videos on Javascript which helped me understand some of the language terms a little and even tried W3C website tutorials. Posted: 07 Oct 2021 01:44 PM PDT I see a lot of devs out here preach to develop your social media presence to help get a job. I despise social media and so t have any public accounts on any platform. Is this a must in today's time or can I land a job with just my own website and portfolio? [link] [comments]
JWT Cookie not working in angular despite working in postman Posted: 07 Oct 2021 12:39 AM PDT Hi, I am currently facing an issue with my authentification process on a nodeJS server I built. I implemented authentification routes (login that gives you a jwt cookie, register, logout that deletes the cookie) and whenever I test them with Postman they work just fine. The problem is that when I call the routes from my angular project, the cookie isnt working in the browser. I have no idea what the problem is, so any help would really be appreciated I made a StackOverflow post on this issue, and I included code there. EDIT: SOLVED; if you are having the same issue, try including { withCredentials:true } to the request [link] [comments]

Is web development a dying field with all these "do it yourself" website builders out there? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 02:52 PM PDT It seems if a person wants to create a site they can just go to one of those site and drag and drop to build a website. [link] [comments]
Hardware Engineer in Dire need of Front End help Posted: 07 Oct 2021 08:39 AM PDT hello, i'm a hardware engineering intern that somehow got stuck producing a full blown data dashboard/(website?) on node JS. Yes, when i say hardware engineer, I have a degree in EE but am doing a MS in CS right now. When I applied, I was expecting a digital design role, but they saw that I was doing a CS masters and chucked me into this "full-stack" position. please bear with me, the technical terms i've learned was ONLY through youtube, so if i fuck anything up, please forgive me. So at the moment, I'm completely lost as to how to implement a front end. I don't know what tools i need, what's the general flow of production and what is the sequence of tasks i must do. In terms of scale of this project, its meant to only be used internally by our Electrical Engineers, so it's really a small and shitty project (but ofc they still want it somewhat nice looking) Let me first explain what I have been able to complete so far. So far, for our backend, I have a python script that can mine user data from JSON files. That script then sends POST http requests to our Node server. So our node server currently uses the "Sequelize" ORM to commit the data into our "SQLite" database. In our database, we currently have 3 main tables. Which are chained in terms of 1 to many associations. In the following manner User -> Projects -> runs -> Data. So there are many users all linked to many projects. within those projects there are many runs. And for each run, there are many pieces of data. The data table is the most filled of all the tables if you were wondering. At this point, I have no idea how to produce a front end, or what tools i'd need. This is where i need your help reddit :(. Please just let me know what tools and what things i'd need to look up to get this front end goin. this isn't some homework post asking you to do it for me, im so desperate i just need to know what tools i need and the general flow of what i need to do. i can probably figure the rest out myself. In terms of specifications, I need to build a dashboard that will allow me to first select user and then project. Then i need to be able to display the different run data in separate tables. I also need to have a feature that will allow me to compare different data from separate runs within the same project (not cross projects). I've tried designing a wireframe, but again, I HAVE NO DESIGN EXPERIENCE. WHY DO THEY HAVE SO MUCH EXPECTATIONS OF ME GIVEN MY BACKGROUND. IM STILL IN SCHOOL WHILE DOING THIS. MODS: I've tried my best to follow your community guidelines on asking questions, please dont block this post [link] [comments]
Why are some web frameworks faster than others? What are the differences? Posted: 06 Oct 2021 11:52 PM PDT For example in the programming rust there are the Rocket and Actix frameworks. I'd expect them to be around the same speed however actix is significantly faster. [link] [comments]
Substance of interview didn't match job posting at all. Posted: 07 Oct 2021 01:59 PM PDT So I recently interview for a "Support Developer" role basically handling ticket requests for a certain platform. The company is a semi-large cyber security company, and one that I really wanted to work for simply because I believe in the company mission, which matters to me believe it or not. Anyways, there was almost no specific requirements to know any particular coding language, and most of it was vague and spoke of wanting "motivated" people who were willing to learn, people who are detail oriented, have proficiency in at least "one object oriented programming language" (but didn't mention any in particular) and a few other mentions of things like "familiarity with web application structure" and things like that. For a developer job posting, it was pretty general, which I've seen in entry-level job postings before. I had a Zoom interview invitation sent by the recruiter for the company, and it listed 4 individuals I would be interviewing in panel format. When the interview was upon me, I clicked the Zoom link and was met by 2 individuals, only 1 of which was in the list of the 4 people I was supposed to meet with. We started talking and soon they began asking my questions about my experience and knowledge of Java and SQL. I do not know Java or SQL, beyond cursory research I've had to do for various reasons over the course of my development career(only about 3 years now) and told them that very honestly. It ended up in them basically very obviously not asking most of their questions because they realized I wouldn't know how to answer them. I said thank you and then we ended up interview. I was left feeling kind of baffled, because it didn't even really feel like I interviewed for the role I applied for. Not only that, but if they had reviewed my resume, they would've seen that it has SQL and Java nowhere on it, and lists the skills I DO possess. So I was left wondering wtf happened. Note: I had already spoken to the recruiter about the role on the phone before, and what she described to me in no way matched the role they were describing in the interview. Because I was kind of caught looking like a deer in headlights, I didn't think to ask them in the interview why I was only meeting with 1 of the 4 people I was told I would meet with, or specifically to reconfirm the position I was interviewing for; I assumed it was all intentional and that perhaps they just changed it up a bit, which wouldn't surprise me. I ended up going back to their career page and found the job I applied for, and verified again that "Java" and "SQL" were nowhere listed on the posting; nowhere. I then found a similar posting for a "Software Engineer" for the same platform that the Support Developer was role was for, and THAT posting did indeed mention SQL and Java quite a bit, so I suspected that maybe I inadvertently interviewed for the wrong role due to a possible miscommunication on the company's part. That may be a stretch, but at my own company things like that have happened once or twice so I figured it was possible. I reached out to the recruiter, who seemed equally as shocked and said she escalated it to the hiring manager to see what happened and that they shouldn't have even brought up SQL or Java unless they've decided to go in another direction with the role itself entirely, which she said would be the first she has heard of it as well. She apologized and stuff but I am beginning to wonder just wtf happened. Anyone ever have anything like this happen to them? [link] [comments]
Is there a proper/(advanced?) way of making a component template for many different forms Posted: 07 Oct 2021 09:23 AM PDT Hello, I just completed a front-end project at my job, and I am very happy with how I designed mostly everything and made most of it quite configurable so not a lot of copy&paste, but when it came to creating the forms for my app, I felt myself repeating the same code a lot with small/medium differences between the forms, but I still can't wrap my head around doing it any other way, like I would like to make a component for a general form, and then configure it and then use that, but I feel like forms can be so specific sometimes (especially when autofilling fields and autofilling edit fields with values in the DB) that it's just easier to make each form individually despite a lot of it being similar to another form, has anyone else struggled with this or come up with a clean method to make a lot of forms? Link to an article perhaps? For context I am using Vue (so fairly similar to any method you may have devised in React or Angular), and I only have about 1.5 years experience. Thanks for reading! How can I embed HTML in a page on a different domain safely without iframes? Posted: 07 Oct 2021 10:28 AM PDT I am trying to take a server side rendered page that is personalized from one site and embed it on another site. Our team wants to avoid iframes due to concerns of browsers adding restrictions in the future. At a surface level this is easy to do with something like jquery.load, but I need some way to be sure it always comes from our server and is not compromised. I was thinking of maybe making some type of encrypted hash that can only be decrypted with a public key, but I'm not sure. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
