What is the future of Stack Overflow?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 02:55 PM PDT

I recently noticed that Stack Overflow is trying to push their commercialized version of Stack Overflow (just visit their homepage) and I think it's really sad to see them take this path.

Reading into it I fell into the rabbit hole of Stack Overflows alleged demise. Wikipedia has a good short summary, this post is a nice compilation of things going wrong in Stack Exchange.

What are your thoughts on the future of Stack Overflow? With so many mods having left Stack Exchange, have alternatives emerged (apart from reddit)?

What options are there for foreign language developers when programming in English languages?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 06:35 PM PDT

So I've been programming for a while, I only speak English so this doesn't really affect me but I'm interested.

Say you only speak and read Japanese or Swedish and you wish to program in python or java, what options are there?

Do you just have to program with English syntax, like print instead of whatever the Japanese or Swedish equivilant is?

I know there are programming languages in a few foreign languages.

Why is "zero dependencies" seen as a good thing in software? Isn't that violating the very important principle of "reuse code"?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 11:06 AM PDT

Often times I see software advertise itself as "zero dependencies", and it gets celebrated as a great thing. Though there are exceptions, I find that "zero dependencies" means the developer might have had to reinvent functionality that already exists and duplicate it in their app, when they could have just imported a dependency and focused on the part of the code that no one has invented yet, at least not in the way they want to do it.

If for any reason, the existing solution is not perfect, the developer could still contribute to upstream, or even fork it and add to it.

If the existing solution is really just so bad they have to rewrite it, it would still be ideal to separate it as its own separate package that can be maintained separately and used for for different purposes.

If the app was just a really small thing that really didn't need dependencies, I'd agree. But this isn't always the case.

    What are your thoughts?

Where to start? Video Editing App For Instruments

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 09:19 PM PDT

Good day, hope you are all feeling great :)

    Problem?
To create a video editing app specific to instruments like guitar, piano, and other stuff.

    Goals?
    - Platform. Want it to be a web app if possible if not it can be a mobile app.
    - Add animated graphics to the video.
    - Scrubbing the video should be smooth. (I'm aware this depends on the device but with the right device it should be smooth)

    My progress?

    1. FFMPEG
This was the first library that came to my mind when it comes to video manipulation but after testing it out like adding some text to the video I feel like it won't do the job or at least it would be difficult but I think I can still use it but not for the animated graphics part.
    2. Unity
Still researching this seems like a good fit for the animated graphics requirement.
    3. Other stuff I'm researching about;
      WebGL, WebAssembly,

    My main challenge?
I think currently my main problem is adding graphic animations to the video. Just an example for pianos adding some bar notes.

    Note:
I am aware that there are existing apps that can do this but I'm taking this project to learn. My experience with programming is almost 9 years but mostly related to enterprise applications and related to this project. I don't mind learning new tech/language in fact I enjoy it that's why I'm doing this 😂.

Also, I'm posting this to a lot of programming subs I'm already apologizing in advance if you see this again😂. I'm not spamming I just want to gather inputs and ideas.

    Thanks in advance :)

Is it possible to make a chrome extension for Twitch that will filter out a specific tag?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 10:21 AM PDT

I want to filter out vtubers, because I prefer watching webcams. I am totally new to programming, but this is the first time it's occurred to me that I can make something with it that could improve my life (a tiny tiny bit).

Is this possible? And if so, any help or resources that could assist me with doing it?

Master debugger users: how do you do it? What is your general approach?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 04:57 PM PDT

Currently, I only have good experience using print statements and logging to debug my applications. This has taken me far, but I am starting to approach a point in my career where print statements and logging for detecting errors results in a lot of guesswork.

This is a question for people who use debuggers, and are relatively good at using breakpoints/steps/etc. in them. What is your general approach to debugging? If you notice your program is crashing/infinite-looping and you decide to open a debugger, what do you do? What is your mindset when you start debugging? Is there a calculated approach you take, or is it more ad-hoc?

Any advice is welcome. I would like to get better with using debuggers in general - whether it's PDB, GDB, or even browser debuggers.

[help | C language] ActivateAudioInterfaceAsync crossover issue

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 06:30 PM PDT

An OBS plugin made to grab audio directly from individual programs is having an issue where multiple Audio sources can cross over and both grab the same audio even when set to different apps, it uses ActivateAudioInterfaceAsync and apparently the example code has this issue too. Can anyone provide some assistance?

How difficult would this project be?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 04:12 PM PDT

Hello, I am new to programming, currently a freshman in a C++ course. I am not sure if this is the right sub to post this is in, so please let me know if it is not. One of the projects I have always wanted to do was write a program that will automatically perform a water change on my aquariums. Essentially I want to be able to click a button or say a command for example " Hey Google, water change my aquarium". I want the program to turn on a drain pump then turn it off after a specified amount of time, then after it turns off the drain pump, turn on a refill pump and then turn it off after a specified amount of time.

    Here is a crappy visual:

I am very new to programming ( only been doing it for a week) so I am not sure where I would even start with this or if it is something I should even be attempting right now. Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

CAN I HELP YOU? I LOOKING FOR EXPERIENCE

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 06:52 PM PDT

Hi, I am a beginner programmer, I am making my portfolio and I would like to ask if any of you have any work or task for me and be part of your project.

I have skills with Java, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, data structure, interface creation, Visual Studio, and VS code, I am good with Git. All at a junior level.

I would like to gain experience, I don't ask for money or remuneration, just to be able to put that work in my portfolio. If there is pay it's better, but it's not my goal.

Please comment or send me a direct message! Thanks

    Screwed up CodeBlocks

Turn-based game – what do I need in the API?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 12:08 PM PDT

Greetings, and thanks in advance for reading and helping me out.

I have made a kind of strategy game for Android. Only a single player version so far, and I actually finished the single player game quickly, because I knew from the start that I knew all there is to know to finish it, so there was no motivational issues or issues of me becoming stuck with programming problems, etc.

Now I want to expand, and make a multiplayer version – also for browsers. I know HTML and Javascript, so that part won't be a problem, but what's really holding me back is the integration.

I just feel like I can't do it, even though I have some experience with PHP and so on from university. I think what's holding me back is that there are so many implicit issues and challenges that are important at this stage, such as how to prevent abuse. SQL injection, cheating, DDOS.. Or when my database is full, whether the rows for the old games can be reset and reused without problems, etc. Does this make sense? Is there any kind of predefined API for this, or any articles that lists all the things I need to take into account here?

PS: This is a turn-based game, so fast interaction, as in an action game, is not important here. I just want players to be able to seek a random match, or a match with a friend (where they get a code, for example, that they can send to their friends). And I suppose there should be some timing mechanism, that marks a game as "finished" in the SQL after the players stop playing.

I've been involved in a few industries and, although I love programming, it's community is the most toxic out there. Why is it so superficial and toxic?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 11:46 AM PDT

People will shame you over the dumbest things: your programming language, your text editor/IDE, your OS, your typing speed, your age, your work-life balance, your gender, your framework, your cloud provider...

I've worked in engineering, hospitality, human resources, and elderly care before. They all had opinionated assholes, but being an asshole was never apart of the culture. What's with tech? Everything affiliated with our industry is pompous and condescending. Stackoverflow is more hostile than the darkest places on Tumblr. How is it that the nerdiest industry has the most bullies?

A simple HTML parser that also applies CSS (in Java)?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 09:50 AM PDT

In short, I want to display simple HTML pages inside of my Android app on my own, WITHOUT using WebView. The HTML will be fairly simple: no JavaScript, no form, no animation, no video/audio, basic HTML tags (p, div, b, span, img), basic CSS classes for applying font size/weight/colour.

I have been using a few HTML parsers, but they are just providing DOM access. What I am thinking about is a library that somehow parses CSS files too and provide the CSS styles with the HTML elements too, so that I could easily display the HTML page using Android's widgets (like TextView, ImageView etc). I am NOT looking for an alternative WebView (a control that displays HTML on its own); I am looking for a library that parses all HTML/CSS and gives me the information in an easy format so that I can display the HTML on my own.

    Is there any such library?

Does the programming language really matter?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 05:54 AM PDT

I currently am learning how to code using Delphi and I've noticed that it is not a very popular programming language. Should i switch to Python/Java or will it not really make a difference as to which programming language i use to learn code?

    Setting Up Dev Env

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 05:06 AM PDT

I set up my Visual Studio - C++ language standard, disabled extensions & increased compiler warning sensitivity.

Now I'm setting up my dev env on linux. I'm using gcc.

Are the same three things required for setting up gcc? Or is gcc a different beast?

For C++20, I tried googling and couldn't find a solution on how to enable C++20. All I found was -std=c++20, but I'm a Linux noob so I couldn't get this to work. I get an error: command not found.

But I also want higher warning sensitivity and extensions off but no idea how to do that either.

What web dev stack options are available for someone who doesn’t want to be a sys admin?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 01:00 AM PDT

Some context: I used to be an engineer years ago, working with Java with an in-house framework on enterprise systems, but have moved on to management since. I want to get back to programming for some fun personal projects, and for the random mini jobs that I want to automate.

I tried Python with Flask and love how "modern" it is compared to working on Java from before, or maybe just features that make building tiny apps faster and easier (stuff like dynamic typing, JIT compilation, etc).

However, the problem is the amount of sysadmin work that I have to do to get started or even keep things working which I hate.

Ideally, I'm looking for something like macOS/iOS development where there's just one main IDE, language, framework, etc that all works perfectly together, and has a fair bit of backwards compatibility built-in, so I can just install one thing and start building what I want instead of spending hours if not days dealing with language/framework/package-manager/etc versions?

I have a feeling C# + .Net might be what I'm after, but ideally I'd want to avoid that as I'm very comfortable on macOS/*Nix.

    Debugging

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 12:45 AM PDT

    Hey.

I started working a year ago after college and have been working in python, JS, java, JavaScript, groovy etc ever since. I've been mainly using plain text editors like Sublime or notepad++ to write completely new code and vim when working on existing code and executing all code from console.

I, and everyone in my team, is debugging by printing stuff as usual but I've understood that many prefer debugging mode which allegedly is more efficient, so obviously I want to learn this. Do I need an IDE for this or is it possible to run code directly in console through debug software or something?

How do you guys debug? Enlighten me please!

    Thanks.
