How much my game cost to make (broken down), about to launch into Early Access

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 06:42 AM PDT

Hi I'm Keith, so I've been working on this game for about 2 years and 4 months now, for something like 5-20 hours a week, probably averaging 10. I'm a programmer by trade and I've created a bunch of other smaller games (I'm 29 and have been making games for fun since about 16). But this is my largest project and I contracted out a bunch of assets to make it as good as possible.

I won't breakdown the exact costs of things from my contractors to protect their prices, but I'll show each category and give an idea of all the assets I got for the price. Here's the breakdown of that:

    3D Models - $3,600
5 characters, 7 unique buildings, a dozen accessories for characters

    UI Art - $900
20 comic panels, in-match UI, bunch of UI icons

    Other Art - $1,000
art test for promo graphic, promo graphic, stylized images for marketing

    SFX/Music - $900
8 music tracks, two voice overs, and a bunch of SFX

    Other - $1000
steam fee, design consultation, twitter ads, PR consultation, discord setup, QA, sponsored tournament

Assets from the Stores - $650

    Total - $8,050

Feel free to ask any questions! I'm an open book on it unless it's about the specific contractor prices - I want to respect their privacy. The game is here: Steam

EDIT: I will say that there's a couple places I could have saved money - I really didn't need the "stylized images for marketing", I did that early-on because the game's screenshots sucked and I wanted something fancier but they didn't really help (you can only post them so many times and they're useless on the Steam store). I also really didn't need a couple of the consultations I got, and I ended up not using a couple of music tracks. So if I was smart I could have saved about $1000. But the rest was pretty essential for what I wanted to build, and I spent a lot of time finding artists, to make sure that they were what I was looking for. Made posts on deviantart, and sent lots of DM's to artists I liked on ArtStation, Twitter, IG.

Came here since you guys are the experts, but can someone explain why so many games have janky movement when a character turns while walking or running and why it's so hard to get smooth movement as a character turns, is this done purposefully or is it just an example of poor quality control

Should I consider getting a job at a company, if I have autism?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 04:49 AM PDT

I've been studying game development for a few years, I'm mostly into programming with Unity. and do some 3d stuff with Blender. I was wondering, if being indie/freelancer is the only option, or should I make some portfolio and apply for company jobs? I have decent social skills, can write documentation, and explain technical stuff pretty well. But I'm boring, uninteresting and not likable for normal people. lack of emotional contact makes them think, I'm insensitive and rude sometimes, and I get bored and irritated very quick, when people start circling over me like vultures, trying pick me apart. Also I've heard, that gamedev is generally more toxic and competitive environment than most other places. So I'm just not sure what to do.

Place to meet people to start a indie GameDev project

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 10:08 AM PDT

Game development is way too hard to succeed alone although there are people that are able to make beautiful games alone (praise Eric Barone),but we have to be multi skilled to achieve that, and many people met their teams on game jams (fkin COVID-19), like the Hollow Knight crew, but I feel that online is very hard to meet people that does enjoy the same project as I do to come and work together as a team...

I wanted to know if any of you guys feel the same way that I do, and if there is a way to meet other people with these interests to maybe start a project together.

I have been working on a site for gamedevs to signup with their skills (graphics, code, audio, design) and also to be able to post project ideas to gather people into a team, not to generate jobs, but to generate teams, just wanted to know if you guys feel that it is somewhat useful or not.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this, if you think that it is a bad idea or if this problem is already solved by other solution also please let me know.

    Thanks for reading :)

How should I lead my indie game team and what is the right path to take after failing our first project?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 03:05 AM PDT

    Hello fellow developers!

About a month ago I requested help from various people in order to make a "small platformer game" (famous last words). We were about 5 people that had never worked before. Some of them did art, some did sound and I did the coding.

Everything started quite nice and all, but as time went by... Guess what! *fart noises* We simply stopped communicating as much on Discord and we also stopped putting the work in. I must emphasize that we are partners and they are not my employees, which means I'm not paying them. All the money we make depends on how well the game does.

    So, to recap:

    • It seems like a 2D platformer story-based game was too big-scope for us (we are not beginners in our fields btw).
    • We are now all acknowledging that shit went wrong and therefore the team size is probably going to go down from 6 people to 3-4 as some have decided to leave.
    • We haven't ever worked-completed any game before as a team

What is the wise path we should take right now if we still want to work with each other?

    • Should we build small mobile games first?
    • Should we keep going with the one we got right now?
    • Should we simply disband the team?

Any input or experience on the topic is highly appreciated...

    KEEP DEVELOPING!

I'm starting to regret getting into Game Design and that my dream was half baked. Can anyone share some advice?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 09:09 AM PDT

Like, after hearing all sorts of horror stories over the years from a podcast I listen to, other people in the industry and word of mouth online, me learning that enjoying games is one thing while making them is a whole other, that I can't really leave my city to a better suitable place like Montreal and that I just simply chose the Game Design program at my schools Open House in 2016 cause it was only the career choice I thought about back in Junior High instead of taking a gap year to explore myself, makes me REALLY think I should've chosen something else like an IT job that pays decently and isn't that much of a hassle, but I'm so close to finishing the Game Design program at my school already and I've used up my scholarship, I'm using my CERB money for the last couple classes and I dunno if I can afford to change now.

Like what did I think was gonna happen? That I was gonna be making smash hits like Nintendo games all the time when I'm probably gonna be stuck making mobile games in whichever small handful of companies that are in my city? and chances are that I'm NOT gonna be part of the next big indie hit or somethin, sorry for rambling, its just that this has all come to a head for me and I'm just stuck. Does anyone have any advice?

Almost 8 years later and still nothing to show for it

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 06:37 PM PDT

I've been developing the same idea ever since leaving highschool 8 years ago. I have destroyed so many projects because it wasn't just the way I wanted it or wanted to go a different direction, spent hundreds of dollars on different assets, switched game engines 3 times and still I have nothing of substance to show for it. I've learned things yes, but leaning to me means nothing when I don't have a product for people to see. There's been times I wanted to just give it up and go back to just enjoying playing other people's games but the other part wants to see this through to the end even if it takes a couple years more. I guess I just want to know if any of you guys have been through similar feelings or experiences and what you did to overcome it

Sims 3 as software to make buildings in my game

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 12:01 PM PDT

This question can be stupid, because I am new to this, but.... Can I use Sims 3 building screenshots in my game legally? I want to make a visual novel game, but I don't really know how to use blender and stuff like that to make backgrounds/buildings.

(If the answer is no, can you recommend any easy ways to make stuff like that, please i really need this :OOOO)

Any Unity scripting to improve knowledge?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 07:44 AM PDT

I am about to work in a company that makes small casual games. I've graduated from college last year with CS degree, completed official Unity tutorials and 3 months internship in small game dev company.

What are special features (or I dont know how to formulate it) to improve scripting skills and broaden knowledge to increase perfomance in general? Maybe some websites, video tutorials, books.

What I mean is, for instance, dotween-like scripring, or maybe custom object pooling system to improve perfomance.

Help! Trying to get into Xbox ID, and Microsoft is being difficult. Need your advice!

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 10:06 AM PDT

My dinosaur horror game Fossilfuel has been doing pretty good on Steam EA, and my big dream is to get into the Xbox ID program to get on Xbox.

I applied and Microsoft basically responded with an extremely vague, keep working on it and re-submit. When pressed for details they said they don't have time to give details. Just keep working on it. Which leaves me in a bit of a bind. (No XboxID means no Xbox Dev kit from Epic too). Do any more experienced Devs on here have experience with Microsoft? And any pointers on getting into the program? Thank you!

3d UI thoughts on the subject?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 09:39 AM PDT

I am thinking about implementing 3d ui into my game. And by 3d ui I mean like the fallout pip boy and others similar to that. I personally love 3d ui because I feel it makes everything feel more natural but I have read articles and things saying that players would prefer the standard 2d ui. So what are your thoughts on the subject? Love it? Hate it? Are there some good and bad examples of 3d ui being implemented? And what do you think 3d ui's place is? I would love to hear people thoughts on the subject since I have been running around in my own head against my own bias's :)

Looking for a French to English localization contractor

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 09:01 AM PDT

I'm looking for a person who can work with a French developer and really localize the game's script from French to English in a way that's hands-on and involved with the writing. Not just translation, but also good English proof-reading.

Where would I look for this type of person?

Any materials about making a visual style?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 12:27 PM PDT

So I'm developing a game (3D first person) and I'm getting close to the point where I start to add content. Initially I wanted to just make generic realistic graphics, but now I'm starting to doubt this decision. Making everything myself will take too much time, and buying assets would be too expensive

I'm wondering if there are good articles about such problem? Because right now I only can think of either realistic graphics or lowpoly (which doesn't fit my game)

    How to invest indies?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 12:26 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I was wondering if there was a website or something to help indies find investors. I personally have some extra money and passion for game dev, but do not have the time to pursue it myself. So I would love to support some indies that need a cash injection. Is there a website or way to help find ones that need it?

Need some advice for what to do/learn in my position

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 12:06 PM PDT

I dont even know if this is the right sub to ask this after seeing some other posts but imma do it .

I am a 17 year old from India who'll enter university this year , after a lot of thought about what do i want to become / what do i wanna pursue in life i have come to the conclusion that the only feasible dream ive ever had is to become a game dev , other were fantasies and dumb affections more than dreams ..

I have done some research on game development and seen that there would be more opportunities for what i want (Work on projects with like minded people working towards a goal because of their passion , creating / managing things we actually care about rather than some corpos health website or something.) if i try to work in us/uk/canada or similiar countries .

So ive consulted with my parents for a foreign education , i and them have decided ill do my post grad from a foreign university , and pursue my undergrad right now in india because it will be more financially alright for my parents and me and also because im too late right now to get into a foreign university (i havent prepped for ielts or anything .) .

Ill be majoring computer science in my undergrad , i have already secured a seat at a good university in india (ngl totally because of luck) but its not in my state and i want to get a good university in my own state so that i dont have to spend more time on stuff like laundary / food and other management stuff one needs to do when they are alone without parents and other family members supporting them , that way i can both try and improve my skills at game creation while maintaining good grades and prepping for a foreign university . So yeah ill be trying my best to get the best uni i can get in my state for next 1-2 months , and if i can't ill just go to the uni i got accepted in .

About my game dev experience right now its basically zero , i did a lil bit of python and sql in highschool but thats about it . I like video games like literally everyone who wants to make em , but i do think that my enjoyment isnt just about playing them , i actually havent found the perfect game for myself and tbh i wanna create one too .

So now for the reason I made you read that bs is because i want to know what skills should i develop for games like ik i should do unity after watching countless vids on yt about this stuff but i really cant get my thoughts straight , i want to know if my path about a foreign uni is right or not or if there is a better path , is there something i should put an extra focus on for my goals than regular stuff , please any sort of advice will be really helpful as i am clueless about this stuff and dont know anybody else irl i could talk to . Thanks .

Edit : Sorry for my bad english , im still working on it .

How Do You Defeat Imposter Syndrome as a Solo Developer?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 11:56 AM PDT

Is there stuff like game jams but for other things?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 07:56 AM PDT

Hello, I wanted to ask if there are groupings like game jams but for other stuff like videos for example.

I was already searching around the web but at first glance couldn't find anything.

Am I missing a certain term I should search for?

The reason I am searching is because I wanna do some video production of any kind but don't want to do everything by myself, nor do I know where exactly I should look for groups.

Edit: Thanks for the replies, I am sure more people will find this post with Google, will look trough them when I'm back home
