    FEEDBACK FRIDAY #454

Well it's Friday here so lets play each others games, be nice and constructive and have fun! keep up with devs on twitter and get involved!

Post your games/demos/builds and give each other feedback!

    Feedback Friday Rules:

Suggestion: As a generally courtesy, you should try to check out a person's game if they have left feedback on your game. If you are leaving feedback on another person's game, it may be helpful to leave a link to your post (if you have posted your game for feedback) at the end of your comment so they can easily find your game.

-Post a link to a playable version of your game or demo

-Do NOT link to screenshots or videos! The emphasis of FF is on testing and feedback, not on graphics! Screenshot Saturday is the better choice for your awesome screenshots and videos!

-Promote good feedback! Try to avoid posting one line responses like "I liked it!" because that is NOT feedback!

-Upvote those who provide good feedback!

-Comments using URL shorteners may get auto-removed by reddit, so we recommend not using them.

My first 'AAA' game cancelled. How often does this happen?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 08:03 PM PDT

I've been working on an a well established western fantasy IP game for a couple of years and was told of it's cancellation yesterday and the team will be disbanded. It seems like a bad dream honestly, that is 2-3 years of production costs gone and also a lot of staff being made to find a new project or job.

I was aware that some times total resets and going back to the drawing board was somewhat common, but letting go the entire team - artists/programmers/QA/designers. Everyone. It's very surprising to me and I'm genuinely upset. I also care for this IP quite a lot. ~

So how often does something like this happen?

I actually did it. I released my first game!

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:27 AM PDT

    I DID IT!

Since I was a little kid I always said I wanted to make games for a living but as I got older life caught up to me I ended up doing I.T which I hate love anyway! During the lockdown, I was bored and thinking how much I wish I could make games and so I decided to do something about it and actually learn.

I started learning c# and Unity and eventually decided to make a game. Now it's nothing groundbreaking and certainly won't be winning any awards. Some people wont like it but I'm proud of it and had an amazing time making and playing it and that's what really matters to me at the end of the day!

I was pretty sure I wasn't going to finish it about 100 times and was so close to giving up some days but pushed through as I wanted to finish a game and release it so I could at least say I had done it. If there are any first-time Game Devs out there struggling to finish a game I would just say, Don't give up, Don't be afraid to cut things out of the game if you think it's going to take too long, and just finish it. Even if it's not what you totally visioned!

If you want to check out my game, It's not the most polished or the best game by a stretch but I find it fun and challenging and hope you will too!

TLDR: I made a game, If you are making your first game just keep going! You can do it! Link to the game above

Game with soviet science fiction atmosphere

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 07:31 AM PDT

Would you like to play a game with USSR sci-fi atmosphere? Like soviet romanticization of cosmic explorations, rockets, tube or transistor technique, can-like robots etc.

I need this information for the purpose of creating a survival game with story based on russian and soviet fiction. In story hero will find a documents written in soviet and russian scientific style. Would it be acceptable and interesting for gamers? Especially from the non Post-Soviet countries.

Want to learn about Interactions in Unity's Input System? I made this video to go over the default Interactions with a visual explanation; I show you how to use them in code, explain priorities with Interactions, and go over how to set up a custom Interaction! Link in Post :)

Currently 3 years into my solo indie project and it's been amazing yet brutal. I've learned there's a lot more to gamedev than programming and art, so I made a video sharing some of my development struggles.

I find that I just can't commit or finish a single project

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:25 PM PDT

I've been "making" games for a solid 5 years now. I always have hundreds of ideas in my head, many games I want to make of nearly all genres. Things I'd normally be very excited to do as well, but I just can't find myself committing to anything. I'd come up with something and think "This is it! This is the game that I will finish" but I never do.

Everyday I'd get an idea, think it over loads, how it would play, what it would look like etc. I'd then load up Unity and try to start writing some code on the basic character controller, mechanics etc. I'd always get to the point where I'd have a couple of the rough gameplay ideas down I had in my head, but I'd never finish them. I think this is having an affect on how well I code too, since I've never finished a game, I never usually get to the point where I am adding things like a main menu, pause menu, dying and re-spawning etc so when I get to these things I feel like an absolute newbie. Sometimes I'll get distracted with more visual things like lighting, while gameplay code gets completely ignored. Or I encounter a problem I'm either too lazy to fix or too scared. I can't commit, I lose interest, I come up with another idea or try and revisit an old one, Cycle repeats.

5 years of this and I still feel like a newbie thinking of making their first GTA clone after finishing a Unity basics tutorial. It's honestly humiliating for me because I love game dev, I love programming, I want to succeed but I can't commit. I have ADHD and Autism which obviously doesn't help at all either.

Sorry for the rambling, but I hope you understand. How can I fix this?

How To Protect Your Team From The Systemic Nature of Sexual Harassment in Game Development?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:39 AM PDT

I apologize in advance if my post seems a little bit rambly.

With the situation evolving with Activision/Blizzard, and with similar revelations being exposed at Ubisoft last year, I was wondering how long until something at EA was exposed. Well that happened last year too, Riot was before that, and Randy Pitchford has a pile of issues just to himself.

I don't think that this is just an issue with these specific companies but a systemic issue with the industry. Women in Law Enforcement experience a similarly hostile work environment and there is evidence to suggest that the career path attracts people that try to take advantage of the situation and this perpetuates the systemic issue.

I have been trying to get my own studio off the ground for a while now, as are many other people on this subreddit. Currently my team consists of myself and two of my personal friends and I would like to think that something like this wouldn't happen under my watch but I am not a perfect person.

The obvious things that I can think of would be to,

    • Let any future staff unionize if they wish
    • Take accusations very seriously, even if they are against your personal friends.
    • To prevent sexist hiring when looking at resumes of potential candidates, the name and gender of the applicant should be obfuscated from the hiring manager, they should only be presented with the applicant number and the applicant's qualifications. Interviews and personal contact should be handled by somebody who is not making the decision.
    • Ideally I also shouldn't have nepotism hires, these issues seem to start from high level employees giving jobs to their friends (I can't speak for everybody, but the point of starting a company was to work with my friends so I am not sure how to work around this one)

All of my formal education is in Information Technology, either programming or networking. My courses had a entrepreneurship 101 class, but it did not touch on anything like this. Are there any strategies or best practices that I should actually be following to protect any potential future team I may have?

Help? Can you give Steam keys that have exclusive access to a private build version of the game?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 09:50 AM PDT

Hey so my game is coming out of early access in a month (woo). We have a big update that I want to give to Streamers and youtubers ahead of the player base; to help build hype for the 1.0 version.

How do I give Steam keys that already have exclusive access to a private version of the game(the final build version). Without making these people have to go into their library and put in a code to change what version of the game they can play.

Is this even possible? I tried looking around on steam works. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Best place to find game dev study buddies?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 07:14 AM PDT

Subreddits like GameDevClassifieds and INAT seem to be suited and only browsed by people looking to start actual projects. And study group subreddits seem to be academic only for the most part.

I am simply looking for a person or 2 who want to keep in touch on discord and learn game dev together.

If anyone here is interested, this is a bit about me.

    • In the eastern US
    • College graduate
    • My skills are mostly programming, some math
    • I will be self-teaching for Unreal Engine. Things I will be working on are Math for Games, Shaders, Game Programming, 3D modeling on Blender, and Music. Not all at the same time because this is obviously too much, but over time.

If anyone is interested let me know. You don't have to be a programmer or anything. As long as you want to self-teach 1 or more of the topics above then I would be glad to learn with you.

EDIT: Ps, I prefer no lives like myself who are on their PC every day.

How can precognition be used in a beat Em up video game??

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 11:10 AM PDT

So at some point in the future I want to make a beat em up styled video game where the protagonist uses these mechanical glasses to see future events and I want the player to rely somewhat on it, and the way it would be used for combat is to pretty much predict exactly what the enemy is going to do. So how can I use this power in a video game?? because idk if it would work or not. I really want the player to rely on this kind of like how they would with Sonic's speed or Mario's jumping.

What to do if you don't any idea on how to do something?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 09:05 AM PDT

In the making of my game, I've reached the part where I have no idea how to make something that I want to do. I am 16 and self educating myself. Everything I've learnt about game making is through YouTube and other "Free" things online. Now, how to find what I have to do to get that result that I want.

    Thanks

    Killstreak Rewards oldschool Arena

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:46 PM PDT

how do you approach killstreaks? do you even use them? do you like them?

A concept i first saw in the original warfare. a concept i still havent decided if i would want or not. at some point it feels unfair to give a well perfoming player a bigger advantage. on the other hand. it felt really good to aim for the different rewards.

this is for oldschool fps arena style combat wich didnt traditionally had killstreak rewards.

i will be honest and say i will most likely make them so i guess some suggestions would be sweet also if you have something fun in mind. no minimap so no UAV needed!

How do games add new customizations in regards to making new textures?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:20 PM PDT

For AAA 3D realistic games, the developers might add a new gear/skins for the players to purchase or earn.

Lets say this time they are adding a new helmet design.

When they do this, are they adding a new helmet texture to a texture atlas full of helmets, or are they making one new texture every time they add a new helmet?

Need a networked FPS camera in Web Browser

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:15 PM PDT

hi guys I need a networked (support up to 2~32 players) FPS camera enabled project/game engine demo that is renderable in Chrome.

Which library is to be used? Three.js? I don't want to use Unity or UE4 because of the bulky and slow initialization.

Literally it is just a blender 3d model, I need people to join and be synchronized on a network. Voice chat, text is also required.

PlayCanvas seems like the most popular solution but wanted to know if there are any similar Three.js projects or other Webgl libraries I haven't heard about.

PlayCanvas loads way more quickly than Unity and this is my main requirement, wonder if there is any hack to speed things up or I think I have to use a completely different game engine.

update: not a low level library like WebGL, where I need to re-invent wheels.

Can somebody explain what the hell google is doing now?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 11:34 AM PDT

I got an email from google, this how it follows:

In September 2021, Google will introduce a new strike-based system to enforce against advertisers who repeatedly violate Google Ads policies. We will begin implementing the strike-based system on Sep 21, 2021, with a gradual ramp up over a period of 3 months, for the following policies: Enabling dishonest behavior, Unapproved substances, Guns, gun parts and related products, Explosives, Other Weapons, and Tobacco. The policy coverage of the strike-based system will be expanded to add additional policies in phases over time and advertisers will be notified each time new policies are brought within scope of the strike-based system.

So I am hoping that probably everyone who is developing and selling android games over playstore has got this email. So if I want to advertise my game and my game happens to have guns, explosive and stuff, I cannot advertise it anymore!?

Can't take screenshots or record screen of my SDL game (cross post from SDL)

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 11:21 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I made a game with SDL2 & openGL and I'm experiencing a strange phenomenal - screenshots and screen recording software can't capture the game screen.

It's like the buffer that printscreen / screen recorders access is "stuck", but if I unfocus and focus the game again, or if there's a window above my game's window, it somehow updates.

I'll give an example to explain better.

I start the game. lets say there's a character in the middle of the screen. I hit printscreen: the result will be black square.

I hide the game window, then open it again. I hit printscreen: the result will be the scene at the time the screen got focus again.

I move the character 20 pixels to the left. I hit printscreen: the result is the same as previous printscreen, ie didn't change.

only after I'll hide the game window and focus it again, printscreens will update to the new position.

Anyone knows why this is happening and how to fix it?

    Thanks!
