    Portfolio Review

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 10:35 AM PDT

Hey. I've been teaching myself how to code as a hobby for over a year now. I'm looking to turn it into a front end career. My first goal at the moment is to get a junior dev job/internship. I would appreciate it if I could I get your feedback on my Portfolio Site. I'd like to know what I could improve and what would a recruiter/potential employer think when they look at my portfolio site.

    Thanks in advance!

    Integrate telegram chat into website

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 11:05 AM PDT

I was wondering if is possible to integrate directly a telegram chat into a website page, the main aim is to display the chat with the live messages and if possible also allow the user to connect with their telegram account and let him message through this window.

Since i found nothing about it I was thinking to solve the first problem using telegram api like thelethon ( python ) or gramjs ( nodejs ) and make them read the live messages and render them directly on the front-end page but for the second problem ( letting the user connect with their telegram ) i think there is no a a way for do that with that kind of api

Why do some domains require a multi-thousand dollar payment up front in addition to the annual payment?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 10:31 AM PDT

Just to use my Reddit username as an example:

oliverhperry.com costs $12 a year on Google Domains.

oliverperry.com, without the h, costs $1300 up front, in addition to the $12 annual charge.

What's happening behind the scenes here? Does someone already own the latter domain, and they've indicated that they'll sell it for that price?

Does TypeScript improve front end web development with static typing?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 02:41 PM PDT

Does writing in TypeScript rather than vanilla JavaScript improve the performance of front end as it provides static typing and cleaner code? I ask because I've been told that dynamic typing is better for front end, but I don't know much about that.

    Average Salary?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:18 PM PDT

I'm in the middle of a career change and working on my path into programming.

I'm mostly interested in Web Development and App Development.

I was wondering what I can expected as a salary for a Jr Web Developer. I saw people on CScareers talking about 70k+ for entry level programmers but wasn't sure how realistic that is.

How much should I get paid as a full-stack dev for a web project?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 09:21 AM PDT

Hello everyone. To add more context, my company has just offered me to do their main website (there's a current one, but they want a totally different look (and functions)). It's not ecommercial website but pretty much an informative one. They told me to keep track on hours and they'll pay. About me, I'm a immediate guy who just finished my program at college. I can write a neatly decent website using Javascript and PHP. My questions are: 1. How much should I charge them based on hourly rate? 2. How much should I charge them as per project? 3. Which one is better? Hourly or per project? 4. What is the common maintenance cost for the website? Such as fixing bug, update, etc. They don't have an IT team that's why they offerred me.

I have a good relationship with top people here in the company so I don't want to charge too much. But I also don't want myself to be a slave for getting paid too low. Thank you. I'm here because google is really hard to dig into these info.

Using WebSockets with React.js, the right way (no library needed)

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 04:44 AM PDT

Most in demand React JS projects?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:37 AM PDT

I want to start really filling up my portfolio with projects, but I've heard that it's best to prioritize quality over quantity. So with that in mind, I want to know what kinda of projects I should focus on that will give me the most opportunities to get work as a freelance developer. I'm thinking maybe E-commerce, company chat akin to Slack, a website for a restaurant where you can view info and order, etc? I'm thinking I'll start as a freelancer and in the meantime I can apply to jobs as a front-end/fullstack developer as I get more experience.

Any and all related advice for a new web developer is appreciated, thanks guys!

Why is my Chrome inspector tool so inaccurate?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 02:33 PM PDT

Why is my Chrome inspector tool so inaccurate?

I'm working on a very simple under-construction page at the moment. I'm aware it looks like crap.

I'm wondering why the preview seems to not display accurately when switching viewports on the inspector tool. Sometimes the preview looks like the image on top, then other times it shows the one on the bottom.

I checked out the live version on an actual phone, and it looks like the second one. But even that one isn't 100% accurate.

Any other tools you guys suggest? This is really ANNOYING.

    Your WordPress/PHP/Gulp Setup?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:05 AM PDT

I was handed a small WordPress/PHP project which already uses a very simple Gulp setup.

For those with similar projects, what does your php workflow look like? Are you using a framework like Pug/Jade?

Anything that makes your life easier?

DAE have experience with taking a test from TestDome?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:09 PM PDT

I took a test from TestDome and unfortunately it didn't go well. It was a combo of .net, c#, asp.net, html, and CSS. Surprisingly, there was not JS.

Unfortunately, it is a difficult test. No partial credit for answers. :(

    I don’t get it

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 11:20 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I have started my web development journey a while ago studying HTML and CSS. So far so good.

    Now, here's my problem(s):

    1. I have a ton of HTML and CSS cheat sheets (very helpful), but I just don't get when to use different units (rem vs em vs %, etc.) although I know what each one does.

    2. I don't know how to be consistent with my layout. I have no clue when to use max width/height to keep things organized. For example, I may set the right width for an h1, a p and an image inside a div with display flex (50% on each side) for mobile and laptop, but everything in between (greater than the mobile breakpoint and smaller than laptop) just ruins the layout. I think here is where max width may work? I don't know.

I wish I could find a cheat sheet with some tips on how to be consistent with a design on different screen sizes, etc. I understand the individual properties but I don't know when to apply certain things (such as units, max width and height, etc.).

Best ad solution for my specific application?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:18 PM PDT

Hey so I'm building a plex server kind of application. It works with files stored on google drive but… it's basically a nextjs app that people can download from my GitHub page and use.

I think selling the code is just in practical. Plus I don't want to. I'd like to however monetise the code somehow. Im thinking of adding ads to the app but I've never used ads so I have no idea.

I'm worried that because every user that downloads the app technically has their own app with their own domain, traditional web ads won't work because they require a fixed domain I assume.

So here I am asking for suggestions.

TL;DR I need to have ads on a next js application that can be downloaded by users and installed on multiple locations with potential domains. Thanks in advance

So what's a good cross platform way to identify your code's host in NodeJS?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2021 11:20 AM PDT

I've been making an app and I'm approaching the stage where I'm going to want to use hosting beyond Heroku's free plan. Mainly for the purposes of logging, I'd like each host to identify itself uniquely in each log message. The app might be hosted on any number of platforms: bare metal, vps, docker containers and any type of OS that runs node etc.

So what's a good cross platform way to have my code identify where it is deployed?

I could obviously just generate a random uuid whenever it starts up, that would enable me to correlate all the logs from a given instance, but I'd rather have something useful like a FQDN if it's available. Right now I am using the 'node-machine-id' module which gives a unique id per machine, but that doesn't help tell me where that instance is running and may not give unique id's for containers.

Is it even a good idea to try and derive an id from within the app itself? Would I be better off setting unique hostnames of my choosing as new instances are deployed and just keep track of those separately?
