[Showoff Saturday] I created a YouTube tutorial on how I build all my websites mobile first and responsive with a real world client site and just recorded my whole time working on it. I also explain how to translate a desktop design into a mobile one.

    Here's the videos:

    Video 1 - HTML https://youtu.be/gIzRM6P4n0w

    Videos 2 to 7 - CSS https://youtu.be/1OL0f01HR7c

    Video 3 https://youtu.be/HJQOQhUWUTA

    Video 4 https://youtu.be/5aEQPoGqp1g

    Video 5 https://youtu.be/4pO82DsHsHc

    Video 6 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngH5morLq_g

    Video 7 https://youtu.be/dZTTaUZ4dUQ

I wanted to do this for a long time to help other developers learn how to make a mobile first and responsive website from scratch in just html and css.

I go over how to structure your html to make the easiest transition from mobile to desktop, how to plan it, and also how to take a desktop design and transfer that to mobile. You're going to need to remove some things, change some things up, or rearrange a lot of things and I go through the decision making processes to help you determine how to do it for your builds.

This is not a perfect video series. I make some mistakes, I change some things halfway through, get stuck on some things, or I don't like how something looks and I change it. But I left everything in there and talked through them so you can see how I think through them and solve them. Because much of your job as a developer will be problem solving and how to work around certain roadblocks. So hopefully watching me go through them will help others Create their own thinking processes and how to tackle a situation, find the problem, and how to fix it. I literally recorded everything from the moment I started till I finished. So it's a long sit through, but for anyone wanting to learn HOW to be a web developer, I think this is a great way to "job shadow" without having to actually be behind someone. I didn't plan any of this video out at all or practice the design beforehand. I have my design and I just start going at it.

I'll be making more of these for new sites I am building, I just want everyone to be able to make beautiful sites and make them mobile first and fully responsive. So I hope this is helpful watching me do it and explaining what I am doing and why every step of the way.

Is there something I am missing about Algorithm exercises?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 03:47 PM PDT

I am doing hackerrank algorithms and just working through them. Is there a more structured way to learn algorithms? Ie. Learning types of algorithms, how to recognize patterns, how to break them down into solvable chunks, common patterns, etc?

I feel like I am just brute forcing everything, there must be a more structured approach to learning and mastering these. Am I correct?

    Thanks

[Showoff Saturday] I started a database about Trees

[Show Off Saturday] I made a website that let's you track your workouts.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 05:12 PM PDT

    TLDR;

I made a site that lets you track your workouts.

    Workout Builder

    and the code: https://github.com/travismoulton/workout

I spent a few months on this site. After going through a Udemy tutorial on React this was the project I used to get familar with React. I had a lot of and feel great about the experience of building it. I'm on the self taught journey, about 1.5 years in. This is my second big project I consider portfolio worthy. Right now my plan is to build one more project, a portfolio itself, and start applying.

I'd love the communities feedback. Do you think this is really portfolio worthy? Is this a solid enough piece of work to show off to potential hiring managers and think it will get me an interview? (Along with other 2 other similar sized projects)

Thanks for your time. README to the project is below for more details!

How to interact with the site

This project gives the user access to a database of exercises provided by the wger database. A user can search by category (e.g Arms, Legs, Back), by a specific muscle, or by equipment. The user also has the ability to create an exercise that will be available only to them. The user can create workouts by combining exercises. Each exercise in a workout can be given a certain of sets, and each set can be described by either how much weight and how many reps, or by time. The user can also create a routine based on a Monday - Sunday calendar, assigning up to one workout per day, or labeling it as a rest day. A user can have multiple routines, but set only 1 as the active routine. You may also record workouts. If you have an active routine, then the record workout page will be pre-loaded with the workout that corresponds to that day of the week. You can modify that workout be eliminating exercises, or adding or modifying the sets / reps / weight / time. You may also change the selected workout to record. There is also a custom built date picker (guided by a medium blog post) that will allow you to record workouts from past or future days.

    The tech I used.

This is my first big React project. I followed the Maximilian Schwarzmuller Udemy course to get started with React (before it was recently updated). This project is built using React Hooks, and Redux for state management with Redux Thunk for async actions. I also used React-Select, React-Icons, and React-Transition-Group. I used CSS modules for styling, with custom properties inside of index.css. I used Firebase for the database and Auth system. There are robust rules inside the database to properly protect the data.

Building a Portfolio | Where do I start?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 02:55 PM PDT

I am thinking about building a portfolio website for myself - I am no webdev whatsoever - at least frontend that is. (I have some PHP and javascript knowledge).
What I would like is a professional looking portfolio to showcase non-webdev related Coding Projects and personal info.

Is it a bad idea to simply use a Bootstrap template? Because I have the feeling without a template I will have a hard time.

What other options would there be for me? What are your recommendations?

How to get good at design?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 07:23 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I am teaching myself web dev and would say I am between novice and intermediate level (know the fundamentals or HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Jquery, php, sql and basics of React).

The main problem I have is that I can never come up with a good design for a website (if I am given a design and am told to make it I can do it no problem, the hard part for me is coming up with one).

Any ideas on how I get better at coming up with nice designs?

    Many thanks :)
